Youtube showed me a video of City Skylines2. I installed it last night. From 8:30 this morning and basically all day I have been doing things like building highways, hospitals, power plants and aggressively dealing with traffic bottlenecks. If you are someone that has played strategy Games and enjoyed them this is cocaine. Just getting a bus route setup is involved. The first time you build an interstate the scale will blow you away and the engine has you with Skyscapers in an established downtown with a University area with lot's of Apartments with stores on the bottom Setting up a train route is one of the most rewarding milestones in the Game. Trams are cool too. I have only had this for one day, It actually made my beer warm.

Been there done that.
Sim city 4+Rush Hour+Simtropolis add ons.
Lost six months in the university playing this. Never installed it again, it’s been nearly 20 years, but it’s in my top 5 games of all time.

The most addictive game that I ever played was a TBS game Alpha Centauri. I have no idea how many thousands and thousands of hours I have put into that game over the past 25 years. So many nights starting it up and telling myself I would just play for a little while and then go to bed and I would end up occasionally looking at the clock and hours had gone by. I would do the "just one more turn" thing until late in the night and end up only getting a few hours sleep until time to get up and head to work. Not a lot of sleep but a lot of fun. :)

Was into flight simming once; Anything on wings, combat not required, sitting for hours feeling veins go varicose, procedures, VATSIM comms, freefall payloads and ARMs or virtual passengers to the gate, weather, reduced visibility, even more procedures, do without engines and soar on thermals for a change of pace; Back in an age when I still had hours straight to throw away. Happy times.

Now I didn't even look at the latest Flight Simulator from Microsoft, which is supposed to be actually good, unlike Flight, which was an unfortunate interlude.

The first Kerbal Space Program was also great before it was sold; Ridiculous rockets, Hohmann transfers, MechJeb, retrograde Munar orbit and orbital rescues, hypersonic circumnavigation flights, probes, rovers, bases. Still had the pre-Steam installed package backed up somewhere, the spyware-free version, fully modded.

Cities: Skylines, the first one, was also fun. That kind of visual detail was previously unseen in a city building game, even though the base game had its flaws, the most glaring of which was that all new citizens were generated with the same age by category, most notably cramming the schools full for a few years before mostly emptying them all out.

These rank highest for me. City builders are great, but the 'suspense' of the 'end turn' / one more turn mechanic is just unbeatable. Every turn you're playing, you already are planning ahead, so you're motivated, all the time, to keep going forward. The simple fact you are limited in your current turn drives you to play another one.

Total War series also capture this mechanic well, and add a ton of complexity on top. Similarly, I'm reminded of Dawn of War's campaign modes with turn based progression. All they did was string some skirmish maps together, but the next turn mechanic makes it tick.

(Offline) ARPGs do similar stuff for me. Its like cocaine when you're set on a build idea, the drive to get max level and try the stuff you've got in your head is strong. I'm playing WH40K Inquisitor now and it has that same thing going on. For this to actually work and not be a living illusion though, the game should not be continuously changed and updated (rebalanced...) because that's really the fun police to me. This is why I say: offline based, because those games can live with a lack of balance between different builds.

In the city builder/sandbox corner I would suggest this one. It hasn't got the depth of CitiesS(2), and is much easier to play through, but if your goal is to just build cool looking towns, this has it in spades

For me without an hour counter I'd have to say the 2nd most addictive is the original Rome Total War. I'd have to estimate several thousand hours at least since release, but it's been 20 years at this point to amass those, so not too bad. My winner of that title for me would have to be State of Decay 2. I managed to sink over 4,000 hours in that thing. Then I just quit it cold turkey and got on with other things.

Total War: Warhammer I, II and III. I have 4000+ hours in them, over the years. One of the few games i have all the DLCs from. And i have yet to play all of the lords and factions i own :)
The game evolved with ups and downs over the years, DLCs changed or added a lot of stuff, so the game now is not what it was 2 years ago. I could probably play it for another 3 years without getting bored by it.

And with the rumours that Total War: 40K is in the works, my gaming life is set for the next 10 years or so

Hmmm...

Probably ones with no real storyline. They have some real replayability. Rimworld is one that comes to mind - nobody is really a Rimworld player until they have a few thousand hours booked.

Yeah if you stumble upon anything Total War40K, post :D I can't wait for that to happen

But its strange. I value these hours far higher, for some reason. Perhaps I just burned out from Dota definitively, barely played last couple of years.

Also forgot about this one. But I don't think I could do this again today, even if I came into the game fresh now. So much has changed

I have a routine of replaying Half-Life or Black Mesa at least once a year, and I enjoy it to the max every single time. I tend to lose myself in Need For Speed Underground 2 as well whenever I pop the disc into my PS2. The early 2000s is the best time period we've had for gaming (or maybe I'm too nostalgic).

You know that is my Kryptonite. As far as I am concerned that is that greatest Game ever created. Yep I was a Shannara, Wheel Of time, Drizzit and Moorcock nut. I fell in love with TW when I got Rome at a flea market for $5. I had been playing Praetorians when I installed that my love of Ancient History went crazy but the first time I used a Dragon's breath to mow down a row of Archers it was over.

Yeah if you stumble upon anything Total War40K, post :D I can't wait for that to happen

For me its ARPGs and Looter shooters and MMOs used to do the same to me in the past but MMOs not anymore. 'I prefer to play solo nowadays or at most with 1-2 friends so party based MMOs just doesn't work with me anymore'
I've picked up Diablo 2 when I was in elementary school grade 7 I think and I've got addicted to it very fast even tho I did not understand most of the game cause of zero English knowledge. 'We had to learn German in my school and that was the only option back then.. It was actually D2 that made me start to self learn English slowly'

I can't even fathom the hours I've sunk into D2 both offline singleplayer and online Battlenet later on when my family got an inet connection when I was in my late grade 8.
Then the looter shooter genre happened with Borderlands 1 'well pretty much what defined the genre imo' and it did the same to me and I have probably like 3000+ hours in the serie or so. 'BL 3 alone is 1100+'

I've never gambled in my life and never got into buying lottery tickets either 'tried but quited it fast' but there is something about ARPGs/Looter Shooter gear and build grind thats just gets me going until I'm satisfied which is like never. 'I try to draw the line nowadays tho, when I'm good with my end game build and reached my end game goals then I take a break/put the game down for a while and thats why the seasonal system is perfect for me'

I hear you on the ARPG lean. DIablo 1& 2 were that good, If you are looking for a good ARPG that won't rob you of 6 hours of life Warhammer 40K Martyr is that good as an ARPG in terms of mechanics and story.

Yeah I've seen you guys talk about it and I did check some gameplay of it and it looks fun, might pick it up when I'm not full of games to play.
I'm not that invested in the whole Warhammer world but I did like and play Warhammer 40k Dawn of War a lot when it was new.

Nowadays I've got my hands full of Diablo 4 tho since the new expansion is coming and Last Epoch is also getting some really cool new updates that I might have to check out between the seasons. 'as long as I find the time somehow..'
For what its worth I've played the current D4 season for ~67 hours and at that point my char was capable of destroying any content in the game with one of the strongest builds and had a very solid gear so I've called it quits till the expansions which gives me some time to play other games. 'backlog games if possible..'

I think I’ve played one game since 2018, I also cherish dota because I’ve played it with mates over the years but if I count it since wc3 dota maps it will be much longer.

Stardew Valley grabbed me hard. Don't know if I've hit 1kh, but def well into the hundreds. Same with Terraria, though both have been out of rotation for a good while now. Have near-4-digit hours into Satisfactory, Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic (all three from pre-Embracer Coffee Stain; coincidence?). FFXIV has me in a nigh deathgrip atm.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3/4 + Civilization (any) + Diablo 2/3 and lastly WoW but WoW was some kinda of very different and very much more effective addiction I had to deal with, it essentially replaced my life back then, and cost me way more time than any of the others. WoW not only makes you addicted through game mechanics but also through the social factor. Lastly its game mechanics are more effective at making you addicted because it’s something like a life simulation.

I got my warning from Everquest. I did not play it but I had colleagues that would call in sick for 2 weeks just to finish a quest.

If you enjoyed Diablo and Dawn of War I could not see how you would not enjoy 40K Martyr of course Torchlight 2 may have been the best ARPG ever in my opinion in that format.

I also got into WoW by accident. The guild leader at the time wanted to stop playing the game, was renting out his remaining acc time (I was in the Diablo 2 section of the guild), and so I said why not and tested it. When he then wanted the account back, I was already so hooked I simply bought the game and started massively playing it. It’s possible it was a stunt so he gets someone to pick up the game but I’ll never know.
