Installed HWmonitor. Noticing that SSDs get a little hot when moving big files around as well as when idling. Shoddy MSI heatsinks as result of purchasing the lowest tier X670E board.

View attachment 362862

Worst offenders being the ones sitting under the GPU which isnt really surprising.

View attachment 362866

There are two SSDs underneath that heatsink. I dont think one of them is making contact with the provided thermal pad properly. Ive seen it hit 95'c in Hwmonitor when moving game related installation files from one SSD to another.

The 'Tall boy' heatsink 2.2CM heatsink is for the boot drive. Ive still got a spare old EK one that i could use aswell.

::EDIT::

To add context. This is how it looks. The 2TB drives are placed together under one heatsink but you can tell which one has contact and which doesnt

I mean my 1TB boot drive I can probably ignore. Temps are more than fine (This is with HWmon running ALL DAY).

The WDC WD512G1X0C-00ENX0 is an old WD Black drive which is a Gen 3 carry over the old machine. I could probably ignore this one too (temperature wise) but I'll put the EK one on as the EK is just sitting here. This 512 is more of a dump drive for things like compressed zip files where I dont want to eat up the endurance of my main drives but dont want to wait forever for zipped files to be read or unzipped like they would on my spinney drives. Yes, I could sacrifice a cheaper QLC drive for this task but since its here I might aswell use it.

::EDIT II::

I actually need to get this PC out on a bench to finish things up anyway. I still have cable management to finish up and making a few adjustments here and there that ive noticed since enjoying the build for a while. Going to unplug the 120mm corsair fan from the aux fan port on the 7800XT and plug it into a motherboard header in the hopes that it gets more airflow over the SSDs.

Since i had the machine out on the bench diagnosing the no power on issue. I went ahead and put some heatsinks on the SSDs. Unfortunately I couldnt get the two in the middle to play nice due to the screws being on either side (The Eluteng one) of the heatsink and they sat too close together to be installed at the same time. I replaced the heatsink on the 512 with the old EK one and it added extra thermal pads to the other SSDs because it was clear to me that the MSI ones werent making contact with the SSD.

Didnt bother changing the heatsink on the 1TB either, Just added extra pads (Arctic TP-3 pads)

I think one of the drives will always run a little hotter but its not hitting 95'c as it was previously.

Holy crap! No drive should ever be reach temps that hot! Better cooling/ventilation indeed!

Problem is already solved. Basically, The MSI provided thermal pads underneath their NVMe MB heatsinks werent making proper contact with the SSDs when screwed all the way down. I've had to double pad it with some TP-3 pads and temps are in a much better place.

There aint a whole lot else I can do as they are positioned right under the first PCI-E slot, So they are going to get cooked by the GPu no matter what.

I have since reworked and optimised the airflow flow a little more. I had an 120mm pulling air from the bottom of the case that was hooked up to the aux fan out port on the 7800XT but I dont think that ran the fan fast enough and while I did have airflow through the case. I didnt have all the fan curves setup correctly and optimised. This was already on the to-do list and i was super lazy about it.

Since i had the machine out on the bench diagnosing the no power on issue.
Had me wondering there, because that's the same reported fault that the B450 MSI motherboards have, IIRC. On YouTube, IIRC, the fix, is to bridge where there was a so-called resistor, (if there wasn't a real need for a resistor in that location, and if there is, the Ohms should be specified in the video) near where the RAM slots are.
That is, it looks good, but when you hit the power button, there's apparently no ATX-power-on-signal. It happens suddenly. Sadly, I got rid of my B450 Tomahawk due to the dreaded no-power-on-fault.
My B450 Tomahawk, looked terminally ill.

Where it may also look totally normal as well, but simply doesn't go into on-mode.

It's actually that a circuit goes open, TMK, and someone found where the culprit is.

I hope nothing like that happens to my MSI Z490 Tomahawk as well!

I got that amazing $400 amazon (sold and shipped) deal for 7950x. After much deliberation I've decided to wait 2yrs for the 9950x when it hopefully will get good discount. Now begins the arduous task of picking from an array of motherboards all lacking in some capacity in PCIe slot arrangement.
Oof, now I'm a bit worried. No shipping status yet and I haven't been charged yet either after 4 days. :( I'm starting to think my order might get canceled.

my two Monitors are running 24/7 and i only turn them to 0% brightness over night. i will do the same with this one and i will not change anything in the settings besides checking for firmware updates.
Well then that will completely disable the compensation cycles that oled should run when powered off.

My board was fine. The culprit turned out to be a dead 7800xt.

Now I'm worried if it was just a RNG that I received a duff card or if that particular model has a high failure rate. People on reddit have reports of crashing, black screening and RGB no longer working.

I could get a refund and wait for RDNA 4 but apparently thats not going to be a huge step forward in terms of performance. I also paid £405 or 408 for the 7800xt so that was a pretty damn awesome deal

That sucks! Because my Nitro+ RX 6750 XT, has been doing good, so far!

Not huge, but the word on the line is that there will be some solid gains in key area's of performance while at the same time reducing power usage and heat generation. Getting a refund on a bum card and waiting would not be unwise.

Then use a different key assignment! I haven't used WASD in over 20years at least. Depending on the game I use WERD or ESDF. Much more comfortable and useful button layouts!

Assuming you have a spare to do you over till you can get the next one?

To me, RDNA4 sounds like it's going to be a very solid update, even with the fact that AMD is dropping out of the ultra high end side of the GPU market.

My haul from my last visit to Japan:
  • wired mouse with retractable USB cord (for traveling)
  • a bunch of USB-A to USB-C cables (really short ones for traveling, mostly from the 100¥ store -- dollar store)
  • clear smartphone case
The Japanese have a culture of packaging/box/wrapping things. Their electronics cases/covers are second to none in terms of value. If you have a six-month old iPhone, you should be able to pick up a clear plastic case for your device at one of their dollar stores. Not a flimsy POS but something that would ordinarily retail for $20+ in the USA. They also have great screen protectors in case you're into that sort of thing.

The Japanese love iPhones, the case/screen protector offerings for the Apple smartphones dwarf the sections for Samsung Galaxys and Google Pixels. Not sure if any other phones are even represented.

You don't even need to trek to the specialized electronics district like Tokyo's Akihabara. You can just go to Bic Camera or Yodobashi stores at major subway/train stations. They even offer tax-free pricing for tourists (you need to bring your passport) which offers a modest 10% discount.

Over half of the stuff in my tech travel kit are Japanese-sourced accessories. Compact, often thoughtfully designed and almost always a bargain.

In the past few years I've put a bunch of items in an Amazon wishlist knowing that I will never buy them online. I just use it as a shopping list for when I get to Japan. 95% of the time I will find a superior item at a fraction of the cost.

Note that there are few bargains in Japan for premium items like phones, PCs, etc. For example, you can buy AirPods Pro (2nd generation) cheaper in the USA from Big A versus buying in Japan (even with the strong dollar).

But the Japanese stores have a bunch of things that have almost no availability abroad. There are things in these Japanese stores where you stop and think, "Damn, I had no idea. But I need one of these, they make total sense." But more often you see something (consumer electronics) in Japan and say, "I had no idea I was overpaying all this time for crappier build standards and poorer design."

I'm also looking forward to setting this little shiny thing up.
Ryzen 5 556OU, 8GG ram and 500GB NVMe, just for streaming only.

Upgraded from Deep Cool AK620 white edition to Thermaltake tough air 710 dual tower cooler.... & first boot shows a reduction in idle temps by 8C compared to old cooler with same ambient temps! using exact same TIM as before, that is Thermal Grizzley Kryonaut extreme TIM. Some interesting days ahead with OC testing & thermal control for my 9700X!

Now I can transfer the Deep Cool tower to my 8600G APU & test OC. Should be significant upgrade from its current stock cooler which is the lowest grade stock cooler AMD make for AM5 (no copper used)
