It's happening again, melting 12v high pwr connectors

My Seasonic manual states: The PSU is for integration into a computer and not intended for external or outdoor usage. You are supposed to build a computer with it. You are not expected to use it as test equipment, to move the cables a lot, to plug the cable in dozens of different GPUs, to plug and unplug the cables from the PSU many times, etc.

what? that just means you should use it for a PC and not to power your toaster. You absolutely can plug different gpus, test, etc...

No. It is the same as all other things. You put your consumer kitchen appliance into a restaurant kitchen, and it will be dead in a few days. You plug a weak plug in many GPUs and you will destroy it.

All products have their intended use. For example, PSU intended for testing would never come with modular cables and it would come with a test jig for measuring the condition of connectors.

what is testing? testing is running a game or a benchmark. What is the difference to what you do as a gamer?
is anyone testing how to power a tesla with a PSU?

You know, this has never before been a problem…

suddenly as nvidia launches some shit gpu all cables become single use plastic straws or something. Can’t make this shit up.

Well, we do now know why was this a problem for DerBauer, if the cable he used was faulty or marginal from the begining or not, and how used and abused it was.

There are always problems with new things and there are probably a lot of marginal cables around, that work only because the power draw of the cards with which they are used is not extreme. 5090 will reveal these weak cables once it is more available.

Perhaps all 5090 should ship with a clamp meter? :D

I swear to god if I have to read one more thread about people defending this dogshit connector I am going to snap.

What is wrong with you? Seriously? Buyers remorse for owning one ?

I have been connecting 8 pins left and right for the past 10 years. Literally hundreds if not thousands of plug in and out on the same three test PSUs and hand full of Test GPUs. They look like theyve gone through a war and yet they still work. BECAUSE THEY ARE DESIGNED TO LAST. Opposed to what we have now. Everyone on the higher Hwbot ranks has a similar setup and story to tell. 3rd party, pre used my ass. This should still work!

The 12VHPWR and updates are simply inacceptable. There is no sane counterargument.

If you were addressing this comment towards me -- I am not "defending this dogshit connector", or CableMod, for that matter. I'm just trying to make the best out of what I have to work with, and possibly offer a hack that might be helpful to others. But, you know, go ahead and keep up the personal attacks, I guess.

Here is the much maligned cable (and connector) in question.

1739400780298.png

Here is a thermal image of the cable with the PC at idle, just a cheap camera attached to the phone, so the results are really crude compared to Roman's capture, but you can make out the cable and the bundle clips at least.

Here is an image of the cable towards the end of a Port Royal run. It looks to me as though the heat is fairly evenly distributed across all of the 12V conductors.

Here are the metrics for the Port Royal run.

Just going to exit the discussion here, too much toxicity in this thread.

No need for all the thermal imaging and screenshots, you can tell the heat is evenly distributed and everything is fine because it's not on fire or smoldering.

so what if even connected? from connecting wires nothing bad should happen. It melted because more than 20 amperes went through one wire cus of bad balancing!

What was that champ?

connecting wires with wago clamps, twist nuts, twisting together is usual practice in electricity, it shouldn't be the issue. The issue is overload of one wire with amperes that is why it melted!
bad load distribution is the main disaster with NVIDIA, they should implement 6 shunts for each wire and load balance on board for each rail separately!.

I never said it was. You need to relax.

Leaving it at “official adapter” is disingenuous. It’s important to be specific. It might be more prone to failure for users that have multiple break points. It’s good to know they might need to be more careful or check more often.

there is no official not official they are all standartazided by PCI. IT's awg wires not adapted for those amperes and that's it.
No user error here, just NVIDIA fault. Stop blaming users.
main problem is 0 load balancing between those 6 because they cut 5$ cost for PCB and shunts
they thought it will work, but it's a disaster. 10% failure rate so far. or maybe more

If it needs so much babysitting then something is wrong.
A good product is good when it is user friendly also among all other good features.

So this is a bad product.

I cannot believe we're even still arguing whether it's user error or not when that isn't even the point of the argument of us saying this connector sucks ass, because it does. There was literally NO reason to move away from 6 pin/8 pin, but leave it to NVIDIA and Intel to decide to change things for the sake of changing things. No one had these issues with the old connectors, and it was quite rare for an 8 pin or 6 pin to be completely smoked and burned out. Then again, we also kept reasonable TDPs for GPUs back in the day. It was unheard of for either AMD or NVIDIA pushing 300W+ out of a non-dual GPU solution.

And here's the FUNNIER thing: these old 6 pin and 8 pin connectors could handle quite a number of plug and unplug cycles, seemingly much more than the new 12VHPWR which is supposed to be "superior".

Sure, in theory, the connector is rated for 600W and can handle it. In practice, it seems that there are actual issues with this all over the fact that the connector can be connected and still have a few pins not making contact. That's bad design, period. On my old EVGA 3080, if one of the 8 pins weren't plugged in all the way, the card would NOT boot. Why can't this safeguard not be implemented on ALL GPUs is beyond me.

But who cares about common sense when we can just be gaslit by electrical engineers who tell us to just shut up and take it on our chins for a $2000+ fucking product... sounds like y'all should be working for NVIDIA doing PR at this point. And I'm not even a fanboy of either company, or any. I own a 4080S, yeah, but it's also rated for only about HALF the power of the 5090. Maybe we should just stop pushing hardware well out of efficiency for a few % in performance.

Everyone is an idiot. You are right.

Or, you know, just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean there is no problem. Did you watch the videos? I think der8auer did a good job of dispelling the belief that he or the other person is an idiot.

How? Isn't that the point?
His comment of not having a problem is just toxic bullshit.

An electrical engineer gives their opinion on this fiasco:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1io4a67

I agree with what the engineer is saying: the older 6 and 8-pin connectors are so over-specified/under-rated that it's almost impossible to overload and melt them even if you try to. The 12V-2x6, by contrast, is pretty much at the very limit of its operation even in the BEST case scenario.

I genuinely believe that if you tried to push 600 watts through a 2x6 MiniFit Jr, you'd get similar problems to the ones being seen on the 2x6 MicroFit-type.

The "official" connectors used for the 12V-2x6 are actually these Amphenol Minitek connectors, not Molex MicroFit:
