Surely can just change XenForo settings to prevent new users spamming ?

With the minimum time between messages setting combined with groups, so only new users who aren't spamming, get promoted after 5 posts to group without the flood restriction? So newly registered accounts can't them spam before mods can stop them?

No need for drama, we can all live in internet peace.

there's a cost to these kind of things.
to use a hyperbole, if we were to prohibit posting altogether, we'd also guarantee that we'd never see any spam. but it doesn't take a genius to see that's not gonna fly.

considering how little restrictions tpu generally has, i'd say its doing a great job in stopping spam. no spamfilter is impervious.
(yes, i might know a thing or three some of you do not - i've and still am running fora/websites, and believe me, combating spam w/o overkilling it & impacting actual users is non-trivial.)

idk man, I would be pretty pissed off if I lost my 17 years old account for some stupidity or a mistake. Lots of memories are associated with this account. I lost my HF account same way few years ago. One day the admin decided I am not contributing to forums and bam... i was banned. it hurts.

I had a cookie, but deleted it. While spam is a concern and issue I don't think TPU is trying to outright to ignore it that wouldn't be wise. I'm sure they do they do what they can within reason to proactively address it, but it's not like it's a full time job to filter out spam delinquents at 0.5ms Hippo latency. Trust me they might look docile, but they speed run.

OCN is constantly bombarded with spammers/scammers.

It helps that a lot of members here are also quite proactive and report spam when they see it instead of leaving it up to the mods to stumble across it.

Yes, that is the biggest help right there. We cant see everything in real time, and we also have a life.. so with our members helping out, it really takes a load off.

We have, but not for the Case Gallery, which has been running the same code for like 15 years.. with no issues, so no point investing time into something that almost never happens. Once this dude gives up it'll be smooth sailing for many years again. Revamping the gallery is on my list, but too far down the list, so I never find time to actually implement anything

On OCN, I report it regularly, but sometimes it takes days before the mods take it down.

OCN? Everybody left OCN. You are reporting to staff that quit or got fired. Don't bother. Big industry bought it out. They are there for profits, not that forum.

Second place HWBot team probably has partners pissed off. Non sponsored team, for the third time, took there number 1 spot. With less than 50 members, half of which active only.

Like many OC sites from back in the day rely on sponsorships and income. It was designed for competitive overclocking. You know the shit nobody really does much of any more?

Luckily, this is not an old school OC site. It is a Tech site with 1 owner like EVGA. It's not owned by big industry. So we get the close attention of a nice clean forum. W1z doesnt need that much staff (forum mods) really. But people need herding.

I have been banned many times and deserved it far more. I have been a mod and admin in other sites and it’s a thankless job with very little upside. If a user wants to be deleted over a minor issue they have that freedom.
