Dr. Spankenstein,

First off thanks again for the help when I first installed them.
Its working great.. I'm very happy with these cards and how they are running. The image quality is very noticeable over the X1950's I pulled out of my rig. I really like the 3Dmark scores they are putting out, even if they are not as high as others here. If the AMD quads ever get to 3 gigs I think that would help my scores alot.

Do you think moving up to PC8500 memory would help much if any?

the extra cores are the biggest improvement! my e6600 scores with similar clocks on proc and GPU was around 11,300 up to 13,800 where im at now. I was suprised to see such a big difference but those CPU tests really do use the extra cores well~!

No problem! Love to help! Glad you're enjoying it! They do have a way with making things look real purdy!!:D

In regards to your memory question, I think it depends more on the chipset. Intel chipsets like bandwidth, so for me it would help. Your 780 chipset probably likes small latencies.
So...if you got some ultra-tight 8500 memory you would see some improvement, but don't quote me as I have ZERO experience with AMD chips/chipsets.

Hey d0s, question...

What MOBO are you using?? Ive had enough with mine, and buying a new one. I know my proc can do much higher than it has been and my mobo needs to go, gettin old!

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6. It's been a brilliant board so far not had any issues but i can't seem to reach that magc 4Ghz mark. I'm guessing the chip just wont do it! :) Complete specs in the system on my profile :)

Yah i was kinda wondering because your specs say a 8800gts. Im going with the maximus formula(i considered the dq6 for a long time), and Im hoping I can hit that 4ghz my self!

Swiftech MCW60 is what I'm using on my pair of 3870's. That block plus ram sinks do a great job with less flow restriction than a full cover block. But I dont know of a full cover block for them yet. If its out there please share it with us..

The 3870 is for my second system, thought i'd give it a bench on this system. Was really impressed once I flashed the card to get rid of the divider issue around 862mhz on the core. I'm using stock cooling tempted to whack the Thermalright HR-03 GT heatsink on it.

Just noticed you had a P5B Deluxe I could only get to 3.6Ghz on it. Also had the issue of the PCI-E slot going into x1 mode. My friend has a Maximus Formula SE. It seems an ok board had some issue with Northbridge temps whack a watercooling system in there and its fine. He is only using a E6600 that can go to 3.7Ghz it does seem okies :).

Erm, you'll have to leave it with me. I've got the utilities at home on a pendrive with the BIOS and flashing utility for DOS.

this is with cpu at 3.2

i cant tell what the mem and core are for your 3870

updated it, every one check it and tell me if anythings wrong. i like updated stuff and accurate stuff ;)

p.s

To let everyone know why this thread is here is so people can get an idea of what to expect from there 3870 or 3850 so the more people who post their results the more info and more accurate things will be :D

I get a feeling that a lot of these cards, while they get good ratings in 3dmark06, would crash and burn after a few hours of gameplay. lol

Try to get more from your cpu and ram. Also, have you tried the pencil mods for your card?

it depends where u come from on this one.. this thread is about benching so i recon the only stability u need is to be able to run the bench.. but u are perfectly correct.. crash and burn in gaming.. yep..

an example.. with mine at the moment..

the fur bench.. not much stability needed.. mine will do it at 931 on the core no problem.. the next speed step would be 944.. it might just make it i havnt tried..

2006.. a bit more stability needed mine makes the trip at 918 on the core..

genuine gaming stability.. way lower.. i would say a good 40 mhz on the core at least..

the 3870 seems a bit odd cos it has very wide "nearly but not quite" stability band.. this might be a driver thing.. dunno..

the other problem is the 13mhz jump.. nothing in between..

trog

ps.. my card has been pencil modded.. a small voltage increase up from a smidge less than 1.35 to a smidge less than 1.4.. this seems to be good for another 50mhz on the core speed..

a higher voltage would give more.. 1.5 makes things very toasty indeed thow..
