i thought the corsair was a strong psu though....oh well. i got a quad at 3.66 so thats pretty good.

Next is the vmod for the 3870 so i can hit 900mhz core :D

nice, can't wait to see the results :toast:
@thatguy
I think the problem with yours is that it recognizes different voltages for the proper one. Everest has issues with Mobos sometimes, did you get any warnings of incompatibility when you started Everest?

Your ds4 might just be too new for it as of now....
haha, yeah i got that warning :p

I finally got this board and cpu figured out! This isn't the limit of them either. (It was the FSB voltage the whole time:cool:) My next run, I will try do do over 4.2ghz, and the good ol' pencil mod to the 3850. :)

Detailed comparison between XP and Vista

Warning: Long post, 6 big images. Be considerate if you quote!

The following are 5 benchmarks I ran on XP SP3 and Vista SP1.

1st is XP with Cat 8.2 and the 2nd is XP with Cat 8.3. CLEARLY shows about a 4000 drop in score.

3rd is Vista with Cat 8.3 just the HD 3870.

4th is Vista with Cat 8.3 just the X2

5th is Vista with Cat 8.3 both the X2 and 3870 in CrossfireX

6th is Vista with Cat 8.2 on the X2

7th is Vista with Cat 8.2 on the 3870

---- More to come Will edit again to insert images once i figure it out :(

Looks like OC'ing my CPU could help me a lot.

Looks like OC'ing my CPU could help me a lot.

I wish I knew how to OC... I think I am CPU bottleneckd. I'm nursing an ancient system but would like to make it last a little longer before I build a new Vista system. I only got a 8229 in 3dMark06. Here's my GPUZ and CPUZ screenshots.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v461/mnm222876/GPUZCPUZ.jpg

Are there any experienced OverClockers out there willing to help me out (via email or phone) and teach me a little about how to OC my system?

Absolutely, but I'm afraid you're quite limited by your PSU. 250Watts will run your system, but overclocking with it probablly won't be worth the trouble. But for a small bump, just get into your bios and bump up the fsb or ht link to 210 from 200 to start with. Hopefully your PSU can handle that, but I'd say it's borderline.

i just want to clairfy something ( and i know we really are already doing this) but i just want people to know, if it has ANYTHING to do with the 3xxx series cards then please, please ask as that is one of the MANY reasons for this thread. Since the card is so cheap, yet so great performance then as erocker said, this thread has a lot of usefull info and the more info the better it becomes, so if you got a question related to 3xxx cards in anyway please post your question.

edit:

going to post this in the first post with the scores.

edit #2: Erocker could you change the thread title again to something like this (you can change it to be more fitting if you wish)

HD 3K Reference, Support, and 3dmark score page

also one more thing, i would like to start putting links in the first post about the mods and just general info about the card.

example, RM vmod thread.

My total power consumption at idle is 120 W and at full load (virus scan, superPi, DVD encoding, and 3d game running at 2650x1600 resolution all running at once) is 210 W. Measuments taken by a Kill A Watt. Plus the Shuttle PSU's are server PSU's so they are quite robust from what I've heard.

My full system specs:

-Shuttle SFF SN95G5 version 2
-nVidia nForce 3 250 chipset
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 939 San Diego core
-OCZ 2GB (1GB x 2) DDR 400 Platinum Rev 2 Cas 2
-Sapphire HD 3850 AGP (using Sapphires most up to date Hotfix drivers)
-WD 10K rpm 74GB Raptor HDD
-Seagate 750GB HDD
-DVD/CD
-stock Shuttle 250 W PSU (full system draw at full load is 210 W measured with a Kill A Watt)
-using onboard sound
-all stock speeds, voltages, and air cooling
-Dell 30" 2650x1600 LCD
-Windows XP Pro SP2 updated
-BIOS and chipset driver most current

I know my way around the BIOS a little bit but have not had the balls to experiment with the volt and speed settings. The only OC experience I have is using ATi Tool to OC the GPU core/memory on previous video cards but ATi Tool doesn't support the 3850 AGP yet. I would like to OC both the CPU and GPU to as much as I can with air cooling, but I'm a total noob at that stuff.

Sorry, here's my do over on the screenshots.

Future mark calls my video card "Generic VGA". LOL! That's sad. I guess they figured no one in their right mind would actually buy a 3850 AGP.

You could try the 8.2 drivers, i see alot of people having problems with 8.3 is windows XP.

But with some mild overclocking you should be able to hit 9k. The max i could get with a X2 5600+ 3ghz and a single 3870 at 860/1200 was 10.5k 3dmarks.

That scores seems pretty good for your settup.

I couldn't get any of the ATi standard drivers to install at all. Kept getting error messages about "You don't have the correct hardware installed to use this driver. Exiting setup..." Blah Blah Blah... The only drivers that would install are the Hotfix drivers on Sapphires website.

Have you checked in the Device Manager to make sure that all your drivers are in order?

Have you checked in the Device Manager to make sure that all your drivers are in order?

I don't have any Exclamation marks on the Device Manager window if that's what you mean. I always do a thorough job of uninstalling all the video card drivers, then use Driver Cleaner, then use CCleaner, etc. before installing new ones.

I submitted a ticket about it to AMD/ATi and their response was to use Sapphires specific drivers for the card because it was a Sapphire product and they (ATi) weren't releasing an AGP version of the 3850 so their driver wasn't optimised for it. Hence, the Sapphire AGP Hotfix driver...

Got my case and power info wrong on the 3D mark page, I will correct it.

How did you get overdrive to give you such high clocks? Vmod?

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
Dunno, but me memory freaks out over 1210 or so, I get artifacting. BUt I have the 860 limiting BIOS. Anythign more than 859 makes it go to green and I have to do a hard shutdown.

if u think your card will run at 872.. jump from 860 straight to 872.. they say it avoids the 862 bios clock error..

at 862 the clock makes its next jump of 7 or so mhz (should do) u dont get what u see in the CCC.. between 862 and 871 u hit the same error pll error..

at 872 u jump past it..

the error is said not to be over 862 simple at 862.. try it.. no guarantee the card will run there but it should miss the timing error..

if u run the rivatuner monitor u will see the actual speed the card runs at.. the later jumps in 13 mhz jumps and misses the 862 error.. or so i read.. he he

if the logic is correct the early bios jumps in 6 mhz jumps and hits the pll error.. the later bios simply by useing bigger jumps misses it.. with the later bios u need to move the CCC 13 points before the clocks alters.. then whoosh its 13 mhz higher.. in between nothing happens..

the early bios is more adjustable.. smaller jumps but hits the pll error..

trog
