is there a SATA3 controller on your motherboard ? disable it in the bios. also disable all kind of extra "raid" controllers to see if the nvme drive appears in the "hard disk" list in the boot section of the bios

+

unplug all other drives.

anyway if you want to install a fresh windows on the nvme, you need the other drive to be disabled.

also i speak french if you need details, send me a private message i'll try my best (no asus here, gigabyte only)

Ok can you try following attached file .But please with afudos from bootable dos (disk or usb ) or from afudos utility in bios . In bootable dos you have to rename the file in bios.rom With afudos utility from bios you can let the actual name . Also take the advise of @MrPanda regarding other controllers especially if you have raid configuration .

Hello Goldfinger,

you will have to change one byte value in the bios mod, it s not very complicated, the hardest part being to identify correctly the hardware hex code of the drive you will use in the future.

please refer to the quick guide i wrote, link to message is in my signature. if you feel lost reading the different steps, dont hesitate to ask for clarifications, we will be around to help.

have a great weekend
Hello MrPanda
I have now installed my M.2 NVMe drive, a Samsung SSD 970 PRO with 512 GB (Hex signature: 144D:A808), in my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R.
Device ID: PCI\VEN_144D&DEV_A808&SUBSYS_A808144D
I have patched the BIOS according to the previous excellent contributions.
Everything went smoothly. Once you understand the process, replacing an NVMe SSD is very quick. So the effort was definitely worth it.

MrPanda, you were right – I only had to change a single number. Thanks again for the tip!

My system:
In the last PCIEX8_2 slot:
SABRENT PCIe M.2 Adapter, NVMe PCIe X16/X8/X4 Card for the Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB
In the PCIEX1_1 slot:
SupaGeek PCI-E USB 3.0 Adapter with 5 ports (2× USB-C, 3× USB-A),
connected to a Chenyang USB 3.0 Hub with 4 ports (Front panel)
Additional USB hub:
ORICO USB 3.0 Clip-Type Hub, 4 Ports, 5 Gbps SuperSpeed, which is highly recommended
Storage management:
Cablecc 6-port storage controller for four SSDs
Everything is working flawlessly. Thank you!
Have a great day!

Hey Goldfinger

Nice work, really nice rig :) i hesitated a lot between usb3 and 10Gbit/s ethernet card. But this relies on the quality of your fiber optic, if optic is available, i know i m quite lucky on that point.
keeping the reference of the USB3 Chipset, just in case ;)

-> one thing though, get something like LibreHardwareMonitor to have an eye on the Nvme's max temperature. If it goes near 65-70°, try to get a heatsink, summers are not getting any cooler year after year.

---

To Small Old Oy : well, those are not the codes you will need to modify the values in the modded bios. check again Catup's guide, you re not looking at the good place.

Hello MrPanda,
thanks again for the helpful instructions. I still have a PCIe-to-NVMe card from my old Gigabyte X299 motherboard with an integrated heatsink. I want to install this one and use the SABRENT PCIe M.2 adapter primarily for testing purposes. It is very practical because you can easily insert and remove it.

I recently found and tested a pretty good heatsink. It is relatively quiet and very effective, even with the hottest M.2 SSDs: Akasa Gecko Pro LX, M.2 NVMe PCIe 5.0, aluminum high-speed cooler with built-in fan.

Yes, with a $6,000 PC, anyone can be fast. The real challenge was, how much performance could still be squeezed out of a 12-year-old machine – and that was definitely a surprise.
Have a nice day!

wow, the Akasa is a monster. I think it might be a bit large and could block the next slot, unless installed on last slot, like mine, problem then being the fan wont have much air intake.

still a solid cooling solution for specifically hot nvme during the summer heatwaves, thanks for the info :)

mine is 15 years old, 12x4ghz with 24GB and fast file system access, well, yeah, it works very fine. GTX 1060/1080 still works very well if you re not into FPS games, why buy a 6k computer indeed. In my house there are 5 computers from 2007 to 2014 all equipped with nvme, this mod is really a game changer, windows 10 biggest problem being the permanent I/O on huge amounts of small files.

works very well on linux too.

glad we could help, thanks for the information feedback :) have a great weekend.

Hi MrPanda,
I have now installed the Gigabyte GC-PCIe4 M2 with an integrated heatsink. It works flawlessly and reaches speeds of 1800 / 1700 MB/s.
And to end on a good note, here’s some
great news

The "StarTech.com Dual M.2 PCIe SSD Adapter Card - x8 / x16 Dual NVMe" works perfectly with two Samsung Pro 970 SSDs, and each drive achieves speeds of 3500 / 2300 MB/s!
Have a nice day!

the price of the startech increased considerably, was 150€ before, and now i can see it only at 210-220. But it feels good to see it tested with current drives.
just a bit curious, is the pci-ex port that you use for the startech shared with another pci-ex port ? graphic card maybe ? can you check the pciex width in the device manager ?

check "current" width and not "maximum" width

I noticed there aren't any Intel 1st party boards listed. Is there a reason for that?

Edit:
Answered my own query.
Hi @davicho6969

You can do this, but you’ll need a hardware programmer to read, modify, and then reflash your board.

Intel mainboard .bio update files are special and to the best of my knowledge cannot be modified and then successfully flashed to the board with software.
Might be helpful for anyone w/ an Intel 1st party board

I understand your curiosity about the speeds I achieved with the StarTech adapter. To clarify, both the StarTech and the Gigabyte GC-PCIe4 M2 were installed in the last slot on my motherboard (PCIEX8_2). What makes this particularly interesting is that, despite being in the same slot, the StarTech adapter somehow negotiated a PCIe 2.0 x8 connection, allowing both NVMe drives to reach full speeds of 3500/2300 MB/s.
In contrast, the Gigabyte adapter is currently operating at PCIe 1.1 x4, which explains the 1800/1700 MB/s speeds.
Additionally, my GPU is definitely running at PCIe 2.0 x16 (00000010), so there is no apparent lane-sharing issue. The reason why the StarTech adapter was able to achieve these higher speeds remains somewhat unclear, but it appears to handle PCIe lane negotiation differently than the Gigabyte adapter. If you have any thoughts on this, I'd be happy to hear them!

the startech adapter has a built in pciexpress switch, based on a ASM2824, that s why you can get x8 out of it. the chip itself might get hot, keep an eye on it, it s not monitored. a simple 4x4cm fan could do the trick in case it becomes a problem (especially with it s head down.)
that s why it s 10x more expensive than a 4x adapter.

there are some middle price range adapters with "bad" ASM chips that cannot do real switching, those adapters are to avoid because they dont bring anything more and cost 3x the price of a basic sabrent.

someone posted a screenshot of 6800MB/s here, but with no explainations. it might be a dual startech combo with a software raid. i wouldnt try to reproduce this : costy and pointless, if you get 6800MB/s on this kind of motherboards, i doubt the graphic card has any bandwith left to work correctly.

should have bought a startech last year when it was still 150€

i think your graphic card is covering the third pciex blue port on the motherboard, so u can get x16 & x8.
mine is loaded to the max and well, had to sacrifice some graphics performance to gain a 10Gbit/s ethernet card.

dont you hate how the small 1x PCIex slot cannot be used because of the gigabyte northbridge heatsink ? what a waste of space and bad design :) :) if this thing was smaller i could fit my soundcard on that port... instead have to use a x8 port for a x1 soundcard....

that s the only thing i dont like with my current setup, and it prevents me to use two nvme.
even if i had a startech, it would be all the way down and with not very much space to breath at all. and i wonder if it would be able to get the x8 with all the other pciex ports loaded.

quite happy of this machine, still, and the xeon overclock is still holding after nearly 2 years of 24/7 uptime.

Thanks a lot for the explanation about the PCIe switch! Now at least I know what I paid for.

Yes, my graphics card completely covers the third slot. But even if that weren’t the case, it would probably be problematic to place a card directly above the GPU fans. Fortunately, my motherboard is installed upside down, so the PCIe-x8_2 slot is at the top – that's exactly where I'll install the StarTech adapter.

I'm currently thinking about the best way to cool it since I don't have much space. One option would be to cut out a section at the top of the case and mount a fan inside – that would be an elegant solution. Since the case is made of aluminum, this shouldn't be a problem.

In the PCIe-x1_1 slot, I have installed a SupaGeek PCIe-USB 3.0 card – it fits just right without interfering with the Northbridge heatsink.

Regarding the Northbridge issues, one possible solution could be to use a heat pipe with a flat heatsink and direct the heat to another area of the case, where a fan could provide better cooling.
Additionally, I might be able to use one of the M.2 slots on the StarTech adapter to create an extra PCIe slot with an M.2-to-PCIe adapter.

How have you optimized your system in terms of cooling? I’d also be interested in your overclocking values. I'm not sure if my Xeon X5690 still has much potential left.
