New Battlefield Blog Post - Ask DICE: Battlefield 4 – Levolution and Commander Mode

[EA] LooooveCommander |08.31.13

We’ve been seeing questions pouring in from fans who are excited for the launch of Battlefield 4 – now just 2 months away!

In the spirit of keeping our fans informed and Prepared 4 Battle we’re continuing a new series called “Ask DICE,” featuring questions that we’ve received from Battlefield players with answers straight from the development team at DICE. Check back here at the Battlefield blog every other Friday for answers, exclusive info, and more.

Battlefield 4 Levolution and Commander Mode Q&A
This week we’ll be answering your questions on Levolution and Commander Mode – both exciting aspects of the game that make Battlefield 4 incredibly unique and fun. Levolution is a game-changing concept where the environment reacts to your every move, both big and small. Now you can bring down a whole skyscraper like in the Siege of Shanghai map or raise bollards to stop a tank or jeep from entering a certain area in the same map. Commander Mode adds a new layer of strategic teamplay to the game by letting two additional players take the Commander seat with a birds-eye view of the map to deploy powerful intel and assets to assist your team on the ground.

Oliveira117 asked, “In Commander Mode if your commander is AFK or doing a very poor job will you be able to vote for him to be demoted (or kicked) from the game?

A Mutiny can be instigated by the team’s squad leaders if they feel the Commander is doing a poor job.

Mutiny will not be allowed for a period of time after a new Commander is chosen, so each Commander will get a chance to prove themselves.

Lieutenant00 asked, “What kinds of features will Commander Mode have, like Tomahawk, supply/vehicle drop, etc.?”

There’s a long list of things you can do as a Commander. From a birds-eye view, Commanders can control various support for their respective teams including cruise missile strikes, gunship, supply and vehicle drops, UAVs and more.

As your team carries out your orders and captures objectives, more assets are unlocked for use.

The Commander can also give you critical intelligence, calling out and pinpointing high value targets (players on a killstreak), and they can guide the troops on the ground to key objectives to win the battle.

Andy0440 asked, “How does one become a Commander?”

Players will queue into a server as a Commander and wait for their opening. We’re looking into giving players other options like going to Battlelog to customize their character/loadout and check out stats while they wait.

Cphacker95 asked, “Will Commander Mode be usable on console, being able to use the mode while on PS3/Xbox or will we need to get a Tablet?”

While you are able to use tablets for Commander Mode, you will also be able to use Commander Mode on current and next gen consoles as well as PC.

Fird96 asked, “Will other maps have their own “special” Levolution? Will there be the same Levolution (falling building) or different Levolution in other maps?”

Yes, Levolution occurs on every map. Some things are massive like reducing a skyscraper to rubble or flooding an entire level in real-time. Others are small but hugely impact the game like shooting fire extinguishers to distract enemies or cutting the power of a building to blind opponents.

If you haven’t seen the Paracel Storm map we unveiled at Gamescom we encourage you to do so. There you can see how players have the option of taking down a turbine weakened by lightning in order to free the damaged destroyer stuck on it. If you manage to set the destroyer adrift, it will crash onto the island, changing the layout of the map and allowing your team to take control of the anti-air weapons on the ship.

These moments are all triggered by the players – they aren’t just timed moments that will happen no matter what you do in the match. You and your teammates will have to decide if it would be a better tactical decision to radically change the map, or if it would be wiser and better for your play-style if you stopped the other team from triggering these events.

NoVa X chopper asked, “Will the gameplay be different on next-gen consoles other than map size and amount of players? By this I mean will there still be Levolution on current gen consoles?”

Levolution remains the same no matter what system you play Battlefield 4 on and the Levolution moments on current-gen consoles will be just as game-changing as on next-gen. The only difference is that for the first time on console, you can play 64-player matches on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at 60 FPS.

Until next time…

Check back here at the Battlefield blog every other Friday for answers, gameplay previews, and more.

Next time we’ll be answering questions about Weapon Customization and Vehicles. What questions do you have? Let us know in the comments below.

Battlefield 4 begins its release on October 29, 2013 and will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Pre-order now and get the China Rising expansion at no additional cost.

Which aspect of Battlefield 4 multiplayer are you looking forward to most?
  • Causing massive destruction and radically changing the map
  • Being the strategic mastermind behind the team
  • Utilizing the small things in Levolution to gain a tactical advantage
  • Calling in the big guns as Commander

Apparently it gets re-commissioned in the not too distant future!

I hope it was re-commissioned with lasers and a shrink ray.

Battlefieldo - Battlefield 4 Soldier Customization: A Preview

We've heard from a few of you that wanted to know more about soldier customization in Battlefield 4. Here is a quick preview of the soldier customization that will be available in the new game. These are just a sample of the non-weapon options on the customization screen. Keep in mind that these things are subject to change, and that features may be tweaked or added before launch. From what we are seeing now though, there are some exciting changes from what we experienced in Battlefield 3. Read on!

GADGETS: TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE
In Battlefield 3, we already saw the ability to equip two gadgets per class. However, the developers for Battlefield 4 seem to have broken down the barrier that separated these into two groups. Meaning that the entire group of gadgets is available to choose from when selecting from the lists for gadget 1 and gadget 2.

From what I've seen, this seems to affect the classes quite differently. For instance, if you run assault, you no are no longer forced to carry defibs as one of your gadgets. You are free to choose two gadgets from the gadget list that best accentuate your own play style. So yes, you can carry med packs and spam 320 grenades down the hall to your heart's content.

To use another example, the engineer gadgets are no longer limited to having to choose an explosive weapon for gadget 1 and a defensive tool for gadget 2. Now, engineers will benefit from being able to carry both tank mines and repair tools simultaneously. So, to summarize, the developers are allowing players to choose the way they want to approach the Battlefield.

In both of the cases above, you still have to give something up. But the point is, YOU get to choose!

WEAPON STATS

When selecting your weapons, we've noticed that there are now bars on the side that indicate each gun's statistics. Scrolling over the available weapons will also compare these stats with the weapon you currently have equipped. Each weapon's damage, accuracy, mobility, range, handling, rate of fire, magazine size, and available fire modes can be seen, along with your own progression with the weapon.

After choosing your weapon, scrolling over weapon attachments will also show you the effect, if any, each attachment will have on the weapon's efficiency in combat.

SOLDIER CAMO

As of right now, the soldier camo choices are fairly limited in the menu. It's unclear whether these will be the only camo options in the final game, and also whether some of these may be Battlepack unlocks. However, here is the list of the soldier camo patterns that are currently available:

IZLOM
BEREZKA
PARTIZAN
VDV FLECTAR
SPETSNAZ JUNGLE
RASTR
KLMK
YEGER
SPLINTER

So, what do you think about the new customization screen so far? Are there any features you would like to see added? Of course, this is just a preview at this point, so be sure to let the developers know what you think as well. And as always, as soon as we get the latest info, we'll pass it along to you!

BF4central - New Battlefield 4 map teased

DICE teases a brand new map set around a dam.

DICE recently did an in-depth post on the upcoming Battlefield 4 Commander mode, where they revealed some additional details. And among those details, they posted a special GIF animation showing the Commander mode in action on a brand new Battlefield 4 map.
The map appears to be the “dam” multiplayer map we’ve been hearing about for a long time. On the right side of the map, you can clearly see a large structure which appears to be a dam wall.
Previously, we’ve heard in the Levolution trailers that players will be able to flood entire areas, and maybe that’s the case with the new map.
The map has 6 control points in the Conquest mode, and it appears to be a Conquest Assault version, where the US faction has a base and China controls all other flags.
On a cool side note, it appears that Commanders will now have access to a “submarine”, which could be used instead of the AC-130 gunship, or it could just be a platform to launch the Tomahawk missiles.
We’ll be sure to keep you up to date as more information is released regarding the new map. Stay tuned!

IGN - DICE Answers Your Battlefield 4 Questions

IGN's community asked, DICE responded.

by Cam Shea SEPTEMBER 3, 2013

Just before this year’s Gamescom, I put out the call for Battlefield 4 questions for DICE. Nearly 2,500 comments later, I, erm, had quite a few to choose from. I picked a few specific questions as well as some common themes among the questions and hit Lars Gustavsson, the Creative Director at DICE with them during the show.

I’ve tried to attribute questions where possible, but please bear in mind I’m largely paraphrasing. Here we go!

[Skiptomahloo and others] How do you guys feel about the rent-a-server model? There’s quite a bit of chatter on IGN about admin abuse and players feeling as though they’ve been punished for skill as opposed to any kind of infraction.

Lars Gustavsson: We’ve definitely heard the community and we experience it ourselves. What we’ve done is we’ve introduced a new system where basically we have pre-defined scales, so if you’re within certain boundaries it will be an official server, which means that people who use – for example – quick match, will be slotted into this. You will be guaranteed a good Battlefield experience. You’ll know what you’re getting into. If you start tweaking around with the settings a little more, it will go down to being ranked which means that you’ll still get your persistence and everything, but some settings might be a bit different from what you’re used to. And then [finally] you can go crazy and change all of the settings, but then it will go down to unranked, so we give you as an admin the freedom, but also to take responsibility for the end user who wants to have a good experience.

So we definitely listened to them. And also we’ve been revisiting how we can ensure that your skill or your XP can be better balanced from game mode to level, so it’s not like some levels are so much more popular than others, just because of a higher XP ratio.

[Ruwagrong, SamMcK1664 and others] Will Battlefield 4 have bot support?

Lars Gustavsson: It’s not in for Battlefield 4. We have our single player experience, we have our multiplayer experience and we’ve been focusing on delivering those. If we had to choose, we’d focus on delivering a good experience to the 64 players that we cater for, as well as adding two commanders on top of those 64… so it’s more possibilities than ever. We’ve also learnt that when we try too much we kill ourselves. (Laughs)

Is it something that you’d look at experimenting with in the background?

Lars Gustavsson: We did it with 1942 and Battlefield 2, we had, kind of, the bot war, which was appreciated by people, even though most people went to the online experience. Who knows for the future. If the voice keeps on getting stronger then that’s something that we need to listen to.

[senior-twinkie, MikeTheAmerican and others] A lot of Battlefield players find vehicles like helicopters and jets daunting. Will you have any kind of tutorial or training in Battlefield 4?

Lars Gustavsson: We’ve definitely heard that people are afraid of getting in there [and using vehicles like helicopters] and that’s not our intent, so what we’ve done is, we’ve added a test range, which allows you to try out all the hardware ahead of time so that if you want to learn to fly a helicopter you can get in there and you can find the settings that work best for you. And then start doing some stunt flights just to feel safe before you go out and get the responsibility of a bunch of other people sitting in your helicopter, so I truly hope that this will help people feel more safe about trying out the whole battlefield.

[Switchphone and others] It’s a running gag, but… Dinosaur mode?

Lars Gustavsson: We definitely hear them and I like the thought of it too, so who knows. It definitely sounds extremely sexy and sounds like something that would fit the battlefield universe very well.

But it’s not something you’re working on?

Lars Gustavsson: Not right now, we’re focusing on Battlefield 4.

[Hawki90] Will you be able to play Battlefield 4 on the Vita via the PS4’s remote play?

Lars Gustavsson: That is the intent. That’s something we’re looking into and working on to see if we can guarantee it.[/B][/B]

Do you have it up and running?

Lars Gustavsson: Yep.

And how does it feel?

Lars Gustavsson: It’s getting there, so it’s, yeah. As always when you’re working on a game you’re still taking one day at a time, but it seems like we’re getting there.

[Aspelin] Will the PS Vita be integrated with Commander mode much like tablets are?

Lars Gustavsson: No, that’s not in the plan today at least.

[ILOVEGAMESANDMOVIES and others] Will Battlefield 4 have splitscreen?

Lars Gustavsson: No, not for Battlefield 4. What we’re trying to do is really up the visceral experience, the dynamic experience, to give a more complete experience than ever on the battlefield. And with new friend join functionality and a lot of focus on playing together as a squad, and what we’ve done for squads, what we’ve done for commanders, we felt that’s the social gaming focus that we’ve had.

DICE seems to be leading the charge with second screen functionality.

Lars Gustavsson: We took a brave step with Battlefield 3 and Battlelog, and it’s probably like Christopher Columbus or someone who set out to do something new and people called them crazy, but it’s proven to be a good strategy and now it’s established. Now we’re pushing the boundaries: we bring it to your tablet, we integrate it to all clients, and on top of that giving you second screen so you as a squad leader can provide orders to your squad or use it as a map. And on next-gen and PC you can use it as well. And of course, Commander, so it’s a plethora of possibilities! On top of that you have customisation of your kit, you have joining servers, there are so many things. And maybe not every player will adapt to use everything, but we’re not telling you how to play: you use what you feel matches your way of playing.

Battlefield strategy/game guide. They sell those? I could sum it up with a sentence.

Kill more than being killed while playing the objective.

That will be $19.95 please.

Is there a hack that will flip Origin the bird for me when it tries to drop my game because Origin is too retarded to know how to do that?

I think if EA/DICE would just fix that steaming pile, it would solve 99% of the reason why I hate BF3.

Origin is buggy but if you are having issues often, there may be problems with your browser's plugins and/or settings. Try opening origin in ie?

Battlefield strategy/game guide. They sell those? I could sum it up with a sentence.

Kill more than being killed while playing the objective.

That will be $19.95 please.

look at average KD radio here, you think it wouldn't sell?

can we change your name to Debby Downer? I'd like that.

I'd be interested in the game guide if it was free, and came out before the game. but the second servers open up, that's a better bet.

Agreed.

Fact of the matter is, that premium expands onto the game. What you get from the game itself is 100% of the game.

DLC/Expansions just expand onto the experience we already know, and I don't understand the fuss with it. Id rather them not release all the maps at once, then you just get sick of them faster, and then what is left?

Spreading out the expansions over a year or so brings new life to the game IMO, and makes it last longer, without becoming boring.

Finding a deal on BF4 is harder than ... (insert your favorite metaphor here). Order the base game at GReen Man Gaming, and get $12.00 credit which you can spend on premium is about the only deal going. I bought from Amazon just because I can spend my credit card reward points there.
