Then again

1W run 24/7 for a year costs about $1

so one might argue that the savings might not cover the extra cost of the bulbs, unless one is in a hot climate and then extra heat equates to higher air conditioning costs.

Well well well, if it's not one of my favourite videos from clive.

Why can't we get them? Phoebus cartel's legacy, not in the sense of "there's a conspiracy made and The Rothschild doesn't wants us to have better tech" but as in, if you made a bulb that can last for say 25 years, you'd run out of people you can sell bulbs to at certain point until it's not profitable anymore to keep manufacturing them, even if you could have a contract with ALL construction companies and contractors in a country as big as the US the amount of bulbs you'd sell wouldn't be enough to keep your company afloat.

The typical incandescent bulb is made to last no more than 2 years by using an extremely thin filament, CFLs meaning the tube itself can last for more than that, but there's a trick, the electronics on them will degrade faster due to overheating -again, no conspiracy- by people unknowingly installing them incorrectly, most houses around the world have ceiling lamp holders, while they're good for incandescent bulbs they're terrible for CFLs as the components in them will eventually overheat due to physics, heat rises, that's bad. I'd say a spiral type CFL is really similar to a nernst on how it behaves (of course the internals are completely different) so they should be placed "upside down" (glass facing up) so that the heat FROM the ballast and transistors heat up the glass -therefore the gas- providing better heat dissipation and light. Unfortunately this technology has been bashed so much for their supposedly short life that manufacturers came up with LED bulbs.

About LEDs we have the surface mounted LED models with the plastic diffuser on top that are usually cheaper and similar to CFLs suffering from the same overheating issue, and the incandescent copycats with a "filament" inside, these generate a bit less heat and most don't feature a capacitor. The LED overvolting in order to get more lumens is indeed an issue so unless you mod a bulb or make your own there's no way around it.
Something that most people don't know is that getting DC LED bulbs is better, why? there's only a filter cap inside them, the conversion is made by a power supply that's far away from the bulb itself so the LEDs will work at a lower temperature, there are plenty out there that work with 48V and all you gotta do is adapt the holder or lamp to work with DC, oh and make sure you don't screw in a DC bulb into an AC holder, that's a nice way to burn money.
Energy saving is a nice bonus, we have some really old chandeliers at home and the big one alone could eat up over 1300W with incandescent bulbs, it's 144 now (8W per bulb) so almost a 90% reduction, what I like about the glass bulb LEDs is that they nailed the right colour tone, it's the same as an incandescent, can't say the same about CFLs, tubes or plastic dome LEDs.

I've been experimenting with LED filament, I have a whole box of it, the only downside is that, of course, I can't blow the glass myself so... that's a problem, I don't have a bulb factory. If I could do it myself it'd look like one of the early carbon based filament bulbs with the nipple at the top, that'd be nice for sure.

I know why we can't get them.

It's a led filament bulb and can be found easily Phillips just started calling them Dubai lamps as a marketing gimmick.

Probably already mentioned, but Big Clive also has a video on how to modify higher Watt-equiv lamps to operate much more efficiently; more like the Dubai lamps.
Since I became aware of the Dubai lamps, I have actually found some filament-COB LED lamps with lower Wattage-equivalent ratings, but having as many apparent COBs as a higher rated lamp. They seem to run quite cool as well. I think they were clearance Phillips candelabra base glass sm. globe lamps.

Any led is better than a cfl for sure.

I've been using Sylvania Zevo LED in my truck tailights for 6 years now.

FYI, the Dubai lamps are "special" in that they are better filtered (better/bigger caps) and have the LEDs being driven "less hard". They last much longer than the COB-filament bulbs common for (at least) the last several years. Additionally, Big Clive's Dubai Lamps were some of the least 'flickery' amongst the UK-available mishmash he tested and modded later.

That's the only difference between the bulbs commissioned in Dubai really to plain old led filaments is the run time

those linked say 20,000 hours, duabi was only 25,000, so not much more. i might consider these and re-do my house with these (the ones I linked)... not sure yet.

So the Dubai ones have more filaments in them causing them to run cooler but the efficiency is negligible as LEDs and most electronics tend to run more efficient the hotter they are but as the filaments are so over rated for their use their lifespan is increased.

The capacitor is up to the manufacturer most decent bulb manufacturers in Asia have far more robust electronics than the crap they export for eBay and Amazon.

We've had some Phillips led bulbs running for about 10years on our parameter fence all night long funny thing is they are starting to fail about now but not in the way you would think. When they do pop they still run but at about 20% lumen output

Those kind of LED bulbs exist , although they are way more expensive , they look like real vintage filament bulbs to me.

Oh filament bulbs - they're super common here and treated as "decorative lighting" since they're too dim to actually light a room
More for mood lamps or a group of them lighting up a dining area or whatever

Some of them simply use opaque glass so you cant tell they're filament, which seems like these "dubai lamps"

the ones I linked said 60w equivalent but only use 6w

60w is fairly bright imo

"normal" globes around here for roof use, used to be 100W

Is 60W enough for many situations? yes. I'd say like 80%
Just not for all of em.

Coming in from ye olde aussie furnace of a sun, the 9W LED's in my roof are barely enough to not walk into a wall - it's a contrast situation (and why those lights have an 18W mode)

wow... that is impressive... interesting... the world needs to make and sell only these imo... as a society we need to realize there are finite resources...

Those kind of LED bulbs exist , although they are way more expensive , they look like real vintage filament bulbs to me.

We've got a whole lot of these in the house for a while now.

Beware some are very 'warm', to the extent it warps color in the room.

But yeah these bulbs in the OP... don't look too special to me. But then the EU has been pushing LED a bit harder.

I mean... take your pick

No the ones your showing generally have half the filaments of Dubai lamps hence why they run so hot.

Ah yes, I see it now, most are x10 efficiency and these x20.
And yes, more filaments = higher efficiency. Since there's 30+ pages on the Philips site, I'm actually curious now if they sell them over here. Gonna have a look.

Sorry it's 4x the filaments the ruler of Dubai has an agreement with Phillips that the lamps won't be sold for like 5 years but as was posted earlier if you fancy some dangerous home ac electronics you can make your own.
