So, this weekend, I sold my 6 back, and headed for the fringes. Trading was ok, but I was starting to get the "Daily Quest" feeling.... Then discovered there's no point to heading to the fringes. I got way up in the 284 sector, and there's not an inhabited planet anywhere in sight... I came across a couple of binary stars, a pair of planets in a
co-orbital (that was pretty cool), and a lot of empty space... There might be a decent spot to go mining up there, but you'd have to come back a good ways to sell. I thought about heading out to the Witchhead Nebula, or that direction anyway, but decided to look to see if there's any point. Aaaaaand, found myself disappointed. Apparently, unlike the original Elites, we haven't expanded out to all reachable space. So, while we can see 400 billion star systems in the galaxy map, there doesn't appear to be a lot of point in trying to see them first-hand
.
Speaking of mining, I decided since I couldn't really do any serious exploring, I'd try my hand at mining. So, stored the MkIII, and bought another
(yes, I know, but i have that intermediate scanner, and until they're willing to give the rest of us half a million credits for it, I'll leave it on my MkIII). Grabbed a couple of class 2 mining lasers and a 4 bin refiner, and then remembered stories of pirates and the like settling around asteroid belts. So, grabbed a couple of turreted pulse lasers, and a solid shield. Just in case.
Aimed myself at the nearest "Metallic" belt (remembering that a "Metal Rich" has a lower spawn for the big P's (plat and palladium)), and dug into a youtube vid to figure out what to do. After trying to shoot the asteroids from waaay to far away, I started shooting little chips off into space. Got lucky, and found a palladium rock amidst the gallite and junk. Gathered enough Palladium for 6 tons, and was getting better at "scooping" the little chunks, and realized how late it was (I really don't like how much of a time window you have to make for your self for this game). It's a good way back to my little outpost, so I decided to try out the theory of "What happens if I just logoff in the middle of space?"
So, the next morning, up and at 'em, feed the monsters, and log back in. Hey! I'm not dead! That's pretty cool. Ok, let's head back to turn in the ore, because figuring out which rock I was aiming at is a living nightmare.. they really need to institute some sort of "tagging" system for miners... it's a bloody mess to go scoop up 2 or 3 little chunks, and turn back around, and realize you don't know which one you just finished, or worse, which of the 15 or 20 rocks out there have the Gallite and I've checked already. Anyway, go turn in my almost pure profit, and head back out to play some more, because scooping the little bastards up is almost relaxing.....
I get back out to my little section of empty freaking space, and realize what I've been missing! As I zoom into real space, I notice a couple of extra dots on the screen. I start lasing some rocks, and a few minutes later get a "Scan detected". What? "What's yours is mine!" Seriously?? *sigh* I then spend the next solid hour beating off one bounty after another, which included a small period of time where an Asp wandered by "Dangerous, wanted", but decided I was small fry, which is good because I was taking a good long time to drop these Eagles and Sidewinders with these two little pulses. This melee culminated in a long battle with a sidewinder, joined up by two security forces, who finally decided to check out all the noise and flashes, and promptly got in the way of my little turrets doing their best. *plink-plink-plink* went the 600cr bounty.... *sigh*.. sonnava... finish off the 'winder, and head for the hills (thanks whoever pointed me to mapping the in-system hyper jump to a different key) - aimed my self for somewhere-besides-here, and bounced. Made it back to the outpost, zipped to the landing pad and sold the couple of silver I'd racked up, and pondered... Is it really worth it?? *sigh* went back out, and gathered some more (no more pirates for some reason), and logged out watching the sun spin.....
