I use Wipr ($1.99) that takes care of ads on youtube (and other sites as well) viewed in Safari.

A week or so ago they f'd up the code in Firefox and Prime Video would just refuse to negotiate HDCP.
WTF?! HDCP, TMK, is at the video-driver-level.

And yet Prime would lock me out of higher quality in Firefox and play normally in Edge.

I wonder if it was a Widevine (or the like) key expiration issue. (DRM key expired, possibly, for Firefox)

This makes me suspect it's an EME DRM software issue. Amazon requires EME and YouTube doesn't, it looks like.

Seems plausible.

YouTube does for it's DRM content(hollywood movies, network TV shows and other top tier premium stuff).

Don't remember Firefox ever alerting me about DRM on YouTube, but it sure did for Amazon videos. Firefox prompts when there's EME content, most likely, at least the Linux version of Firefox does.

About the actual Hollywood stuff and "big-TV" shows, that wouldn't surprise me.

There is content there that is DRM'd. Try looking for the movie "Diehard" you'll see what I mean.

Youtube issues gone for me on Firefox, as quick as they appeared, so I suspect was some a/b testing youtube devs were doing, although the bug report has people who still have the problem.

Also a workaround for the DRM stuff is in Firefox release notes, although better if it wasnt needed at all. - Seems its fixed in 129.0.1.

YouTube's Android mobile app sucks now. Every touch of the screen registers as a button press, if there is a button which would occupy that location. It used to be that one press anywhere would be required to make the button overlay appear, and then subsequent presses on the overlayed buttons registered. Not any more! Now, when you double-tap to skip forward or rewind back, you accidentally do all sorts of other things instead. Oh, I guess I wanted to go to the mini-player. Or rotate the video 90 degrees. Or skip to the next video.
Thanks YouTube!
Morons.
Don't they test this stuff? I figured it was a mistake that they would roll back right away, but it has been weeks.

Google video sucked so bad that no wonder why they bought Youtube.
Early YouTube was such an interesting time. Comedy groups like Black20 were paving a road away from traditional corporate media.

I abandoned their app a while ago. The page in Brave is a much better experience and as a bonus, no ads.

In Russia, they don't play ads so I don't need any adblocker or Premium but the speed is awful from time to time. I really do miss the times when buffering never stopped so you could leave the page till it's 100% buffered. Watching at 4K is impossible sometimes because of this "innovation."

Also had to use VPN/proxy to regain access to YT because of government's insanity. They just can't stop banning everything.

I whitelisted youtube when the crackdown's started. If they start anything else like un-skippable ad's or some other kind of crap I going back to the old ways or even finding an app that will download the video.

Jdownloader is an application you can use to download videos (without watermarks, unlike download helper extension). Linux and Windows versions available too.

You should check out the Newpipe app. All of the youtube, none of the ads. I rather like the layout too. It occasionally gets a bit wonky when they make big changes on youtube, but always fixed in next update.
You can also subscribe to/track channels without having to have it tied to your/or any google account.
