Men Play Female Character in VG, reason

When given the choice, I always choose the woman; don't ask me why, it's by default, I can't explain.

For first person, it doesn't really matter. If there's a choice, I'll go with a guy cuz I be one. In third, though... tend to end up being a lady. I just get tired of male avatars after X hours. Example: Ended up using a re-skin item on my male in FFXIV after maybe a dozen. Some hundreds later and I've stuck with the dragon girl I replaced him with. *shrug* Almost always been a dude in Stardew Valley, tho.

In the end it's all about whether you enjoy it or not, no need to worry about justifying you own personal gaming choice because it's yours to make in the first place.
This is very true, I've always played my games however I like them regardless of what anyone else thinks or says.
Its my personal fun time and nothing else matters.:)

Indeed.

I don't mind sharing my reasons anyway. And this is utterly funny, I'm open about things most people are deadly afraid of being open about and yet, most acquaintances deem me mysterious. Humans are weird.
Same here, I'm almost like an open book and hardly care about taboos and whatever else and I don't mind sharing/discussing such stuff. 'my friends know that I play cultured games with questionable female designs/characters and I've even showed it to 2 girls in the past 2 years and they laughed their ass off '

Playing multiplayer I'll pick a male character, especially if voice chat is involved.
I'd do quite the opposite just for the sake of it. My deep baritone is barely high enough for a Terminator so hearing me whilst staring at my lady char must be one hell of experience. Especially if I'm in the mood for pirate speech.

depend on the roleplay ... usually if i can make a "me" (or slightly enhanced "me") i do it ... specially for offline

online ... i play both,

example : Throne and Liberty

"it's a me" ... yeah i know i'm handsome (joking ... only the beardedness and the headshavedness are alike ... and the right eye ...)
TLPhotoMode_2024_10_20_224415.png

but i could not resist to make a cute sister for the second char ... less pain in switching weapon specialisation, one is a ranger the other is a ravager

Now we see how many of you are horny all the time.

beardedness
Used to rock quite the same beard until recently. I'm usually a "3 days no shave" kinda guy but decided to give it a shot. Looked great but was impractical. Switched back to my usual short stubble.

If given the choice, female every time unless its a game where I will be using voip with strangers. Then male. With my friends though we all usually play girls because we'd rather look at a female than a male while playing. Also, I might add, that I don't play these games thinking I'm the character. I'm just playing someone else, and if she happens to be smoking hot all the better.

you took the "i'm playing with myself" a bit too literally ... "i am playing myself" is the correct form if i am playing my main ...
and if i get horny playing a "me", that's the game fault ... if it has a romance for offline (or a few online one who have "decent" romances ... *aherm* SWTOR )

tho i will not deny that my second char is made according to my preferences either ...

I know in older games, if there was an option to have a female character they usually had advantages the males characters didn't, making them an easier one to use.
Good point, but both had their advantages and disadvantages if done right. So player had a reason to make a choice, other than visuals and voice acting.

Take a look at that Argonian female in Morrowind, intelligence and willpower points makes her a decent mage option (for the reptilian fans). On the other hand, Redguard female is a bad choice for a warrior build.

I'd say the game that has the most choices i seen is Baldur's Gate 3, all characters can be select at start and one is nor a man nor a wo, it's an entity.

To clarify:
I wasn't saying female characters were better as an absolute, I was saying it as an "On Average" kind of thing and this really applying only to older games, esp those on consoles.

The game you referred to here isn't the same as what you'd normally have on a console like Super Mario II, it does involve stats which can vary based on the character and that's a given.
Some are just better than others at a given profession (Class) like it is in real life and again, that's expected.

You do have base set of characteristics, these based on the character's sex/race and these stats also based on the individual themselves in a game like this.
How they develop is another thing which is something most console games tend to have as being along the same lines, regardless of the character you refer to within the same parameters of sex/race but a game like this allows for stats to stack up differently, affecting the quality of the character towards their assigned class even if things like sex/race are the same as for another character.

Simply put, games have come a long way from what they were before and it shows.

You might happen to have a waifu lol.
I might have PTSD from seeing so many dudes pretend to be women on games. It's like as soon as someone plays a character with boobs their actual stick and stones drops off and the catfishing begins.

Thats the reason i don't trust nowadays, back then people were more set on who they were claiming, in MCM 2 we had some lady's playing and when they got on voice it was true.

I'm not sure why do you feel like I'm calling you out on anything here. I've just used your excellent point to give my own example why the gender option was something more than looking (or not) at boobs and bums...

It's a classic RPG system example. Based off of RL traditions and Tolkien's universe. Example: Nords have a 100% frost resistance, Argonians 100% poison resistance.

Yes, the race traits make a big deal with these games. Attributes, skills and resistances that is. Especially for Morrowind, as it has some of the most hardcore leveling systems out there. If you want to have a fully developed character, you need to pay attention to all the details. The starting race and gender, combined with a birthsign and custom major and minor skill list, makes a huge difference in the early game, as well in the endgame. Oblivion is quite dumbed down in that regard.
Simply put, games have come a long way from what they were before and it shows.
Yes, they've become a faceless pile of shit. Just like other media: music, cinema and books. Made to satisfy the majority of consumers, and not to insult anyone if possible. Quantity over quality, screw the common sense and IQ.

Luckily that rarely happened to me and I'm not the kind who would try to make anything extra out out of it if someone thought that I'm a girl.
The worst I've got was 1 dude hitting on me for a few days and creep following me into Raids and when he asked my name I've told him 'I'm Peter' then he stoped doing that and vanished.
I've had nicknames like the purple butt/batman suit girl and whatnot but that was just for fun.

This was actually the strongest char I've had in that game and the gameplay was insanely fun too. 'btw this char/Evie was designed after one of the developer's wife, no effin kidding there..'
I migth just mention it on the side that this game is where I've found my first and biggest love ever so ye so much for dumb stereotypes. 'and yes that happened while playing a female char"

I knew you wasn't calling me out, I was making sure my own thoughts were clear so that I woudn't be misunderstood. :)

IMO, the only people that have a problem with a gender swap in online games in this day and age are the immature ones (problem as if someone would hit on you if you have a female name and char, and vice versa).
90% of the men I meet in the MP games are playing female chars. It's just the prejudice that can feel awkward or funny sometimes.
Few days ago I met a player with a male name and featured avatar. I have a (mostly) female name and avatar. In the chat I was addressing to her as a male. It was funny to her, but I felt bad as being the one fallen to a simple prejudice. I play games to escape the RL to a fantasy world where I can be anything or anyone, and not to exercise being frustrated by the same limitations I already have IRL.

In CP 2077 I generally go female just so I can use the AI Dua Lipa voice, SULTRY! Wouldn't you? The Yelena voice is great too.

I've got a lot of strong female role models in my life, so I'm not ashamed to play female characters. My Mom retired from the Navy, then from the County Sheriff's. it depends on the game, but I do like destroying my friends with Peach in Mario Kart. They get so pissed, lol. Jill is my favorite Resident Evil character. Jun and Asuka in Tekken. In Halo I built out my Spartan to with a female build just because I thought it would be strategic, hit box wise, but I'm not sure if that is real or not. Sometimes I just enjoy playing a strong female character, it's fun.

Stop the off-topic banter, keep it clean, and stay on topic.

Of course. It's a no-nonsense game about men for men. But I'm done being serious whilst playing games, I don't hunt achievements, I don't grind skills. I just do whatever I consider fun. And if playing as a half-naked 8' tall alien with heavy Puerto Rican accent fits my jam I just stop caring about the rest.

Imagine Lamar roasting that alien for having a "yee-yee ass haricut" when the haircut in question looks like a question mark rather than an actual hairjob.
Achievement hunting and skill grinding deserve a thread of their own. I don't know why anyone finds them even slightly entertaining, honestly.

The only game where I don't mind is Kingdom Come Deliverance. That game is supposed to be realistic in a sense that you're not born a hero, so whatever you want to do in it, you have to work for it, which fits the story and the world beautifully. There is also the fact that you can train with the guard captain, so the game actually gives you what you need, you just have to ask for it, and not run to the wild like a hero which you're not. It teaches you humility in a way, which is a quality severely lacking from our modern world.

In other games, though, where you're actually a hero, if the game drops me a message saying "you need 26 more bamboozle points to unlock this", which essentially means "go back and do what you've been doing 41 more times", I give up. My daily life is repetitive enough, I don't want that in a game, too.

Sorry for the off. :ohwell:

What's with the modem clothes and the cartoon character in a medieval fantasy game? This is what kills my immersion far quicker than playing a female character would. :(

I personally don't see the correlation?
