Men Play Female Character in VG, reason

I might have PTSD from seeing so many dudes pretend to be women on games. It's like as soon as someone plays a character with boobs their actual stick and stones drops off and the catfishing begins.

That's one of the many reasons why I generally don't like playing online. There is no face or voice to associate with an offline NPC character.

Even when I play online, I turn voice chat off, as it annoys me to no end. I don't want to be hearing what anyone says, anyway. I just want to enjoy the game.

What's with the modem clothes and the cartoon character in a medieval fantasy game? This is what kills my immersion far quicker than playing a female character would.

mmhhh the clothing are not that modern, they'd fit in a dark fantasy setup a bit more than a MedFan tho they are fine, and the char are not that much cartoon'ish (or i guess that myself also look like a cartoon ...)

in short: work on your imagination and you'd be fine (immersion can be killed by things that are less trivial than that in this game )

Yeah, it's partly my bad. I'm admittedly more of a fan of medieval than fantasy.

I mean, I don't mind a bit of extra as long as it fits the general atmosphere. For example, nobody has any doubts that Witcher's swords never existed, but I have no trouble imagining Geralt's wolf head pommelled sword as a real, working weapon if someone was inclined to make one.

On the other hand, gigantic, 10 ft cleavers that are wider than a human being and armour with claws on the shoulder guard (typical fantasy stuff) are just pure WTF. They would never work in real life.

As for your screenshots, in the first one, I see medieval houses depicted with near-perfection, and a bloke in a modern suit. Modern jacket, modern trousers with a zipper, etc. It doesn't fit the scene.
Same with the woman in the tight mesh dress. It is material that didn't exist at the time the castle in the background is from. Contradictions like these kill all immersion for me. Poor world building, one could say.

It is depend on the playstyle, roleplaying.

Cyberpunk with guns mostly male character. Hacker can be female. (but i mod the game to romance Judy as a male)
I find very strange when a small skinny female holds a big heavy machine gun.

Skyrim very roleplay depended. Magic (not necro), light, stealth characters are mostly female, big heavy warriors, necros are mostly male.

That's fine because that game is about her story, not mine. A narrative experience from main character X's point of view is different from a sandbox-style RPG where you write your own story.

Just my take on the matter.

depend on the roleplay ... usually if i can make a "me" (or slightly enhanced "me") i do it ... specially for offline

online ... i play both,

example : Throne and Liberty

For some reason this play as 'me' was never a thing in my case ever since I'm playing games with character creators/customization. 'why would I want to play as a 172 cm/5.6"+ average looking male in my games..'

I see your point. Personally, as much as I enjoy the sight of a nice female backside, an animated one is still inferior to the real thing, so I'd prefer my games to be just that - games.

Developers can buy me with a captivating story, an enchanting atmosphere, good gameplay mechanics, or any combination of these. If I have it, the sight of an animated ass, or the lack thereof is inconsequential.

I don't know much about him, to be honest. I take every game (Nier as well) at face value.

I do always...

depends on the game, I play mostly male but some games (BG3, Diablo IV, WoW) I'll have multi toons and name them after my kids (not an exact name but nicknames). Plus my daughter gets kick running around the game world talking to NPCs with a character named after her.

in all honesty the is the male is shallow in the game the female one is often just as bad. Bad writing for one means often bad writing across the board

Based on the first 6 minutes or so, apart from the ability to change the main character's breast size, or let her go topless (which I don't see the logic behind, honestly), I only see a generic zombie survival game with some body dismemberment physics. Yawn.

This is exactly what I meant above: I don't mind the sights if they contribute to the story. Here, they don't.

Personally I have never felt a sexual feeling from a video game (probably normal since there aren't many targeting... lets say frogs) and so mostly play characters I can identify with (male in my case). YMMV, and that's fine.
