Rumour that MX500 now has QLC variants?

What's funny is your old one uses the 64 layer nand where the new ones have been updated to 96, 112, and even 176 layers nand yet somehow they are worse

Yeah, i was surprised to see they updated the latest batch of mx500 with 176 layer nand, like that seems diminishing returns but a welcome upgrade, even Samsung 870 Evo is only 112 layers

Only Samsungs drives have not been tampered with secretly without consumer knowledge, their drives are as reliable as the day they launched, sure they're priced like ass, but sadly this is what you should be prepared to pay for peace of mind

Samsungs are a safe option

Please consider adding more classic SanDisk sata drives to the database , like the extreme pro, ultra 3d, and ssd plus, they were popular at the time
Will do, the issue is finding decent reviews to get proper information

Alright, then buy hard drives because 3% of ssd inventory is prone to failure And lets totally forget they come with 5 year warranty
Hi,
Yes we all live for rma and it's awesome to get back refurbished items in return
When data and down time/.. means nothing and rma shipping is free both directions including picking up the rma'ed item I'll knowingly buy defective products

Bait and switch is supposed to be wrong !

I think probably the best way. SATA is starting to look like a dumping ground for junk tier now. Can even find old gen new parts as well from old stock.

If you consider the info valid, I can change the topic title. Thanks for popping into the thread. :)
Seems like SATA driver arent being that developed anymore. More r&d money is going into m.2 nvme drives. I know of only 1 SATA drive that comes in 8tb version and only a few 4tb.

SATA won't disappear for years to come, but obviously most brands are focusing on the future, since M.2 FF will always get a new "faster" revisions, instead of the "dead" SATA 6Gb/s

Ya one nice thing about m2 sticks. Can usually read numbers on the chips

yep, seems odd to me, SATA SSD still is blindingly fast for day to day use, the bigger casing should allow drives for higher capacity vs M.2. Its also easier to put on lots of drives via SATA instead of M.2. Probably marketing ruling the roost chasing peak sequential speeds.

On the 176 layer been used my guess is when a new revision comes out micron stop manufacturing the old so then crucial had choice between latest TLC or QLC, maybe someone in the know can confirm.

I wish the 870 qvo came out in a 16tb version, I would buy one in a heart beat.

Hi I just bought 1TB Mx500 is there anyway to check the specs? For testing, I transferred some 480GB from HDD to Mx500 in 2.5" enclosure.

@GabrielLP14 This is my Mx500 specs after running smi-flash-id. Controller model is SM2259AB instead of SM2295H as listed in ssd db. This drive has slightly better sustained writes once cache is run out since my sister has 64L Micron TLC.

I have two 4TB MX500s, both with SM2259AB controller and Micron 176L(B47R) TLC 2048Gb/CE 512Gb/die NAND, only difference is one has M3CR044 FW while the other has M3CR045.

sata formfactor would allow for 32tb or even 64tb versions of the 870 evo
but nand is still too expensive for those kind of SKUs to be profitable, unfortunately ...
I would buy a 16tb version, put it in a external case. My laptop already has 16tb internally.

so would i.
but the thing is, there needs to be a significant amount of people who'd buy those to make it a worthwhile/successful product, and considering current nand prices we're not there (yet).

Received a 4TB MX500 from Amazon today and ran smi_flash_id. Looks like a mix of SLC/TLC/QLC based on the output below?

Received a 4TB MX500 from Amazon today and ran smi_flash_id. Looks like a mix of SLC/TLC/QLC based on the output below?

Is the SSD running with a partition or initialized as MBR or GPT? If Yes
i'd recommend leaving unpartitioned and not initialized to test it

SM2259B47RR
It does seem to be SM2259H + Micron's B47R

So far iirc this is the firmware list for Crucial's MX500

here are 4 firmware versions known: M3CR01x/M3CR02x - B16A/B17A, M3CR03x- B27a/B27B, M3CR04x - B47R

Haven't partitioned or initialized it - only thing I have done with the drive so far is a firmware update.

176L 3-D TLC then? Guessing this means I should ignore the info shown on the banks? Not an expert, just trying to make sense of the output.

Thanks for your help!

Is it over a USB interface as VLO implies? If so, that could be fudging the readings.

I agree with @GabrielLP14 , it should be SM2259 & B47R because of that Smart readout there.

Damn, I have an mx500 thats a couple years old ( but with low writes, only 3TB) but always found it performed very well for a sata drive, even when mostly full. I saw that recently they've gone on sale. 1TB drive is only $50. Thats half the price of when I bought the first. Thought about buying one and doing it in raid 0 with the original for games and what not. But in light of this information, bad idea I guess??

The only drives confirmed to come with QLC are from AliExpress, which means there's a good chance they're fakes. If you're not buying from that cesspool, don't worry.

I think I have one mx500 2gb version manufactured after that early fw-bug and between these newest qlc-thingies and other stuff. It has been working just fine last time i checked it. Last spring, at least. 97% or something. Can't remember.

My main Win PC is unbootable atm (different story, but that drive is in it as local buffer for my photos), so is there a way to recognize my drive's version under Linux? Or is this just about fake drives?

I've had several incidents in past years, when my drives (even raided backups) or Windows became too broken and lost a lot of my data. Another story... I'm still bitter about them. My NAS is still good after 'bout ten years (knock knock), but it's not powered on in my current network atm. So my mx500 is the only drive for my (older) instant backups rn, if I wanted to access them.

So what's going on, should i be worried?

Are we going back to HDDs and RAMDISKs? Seems like critical data needs to go back to HDDs for the time being. SSDs for "disposable/reinstallable" OS and apps.

IDK I've never had an ssd die on me, even the kingston I bought in 2013. Afaik its still working ( I sold the system it was in not long ago) yet when it comes to hard drives, I've had many fail, especially the shingled ones. I guess its all a crapshoot. You can get lucky, or not so much, either ssd or hdd.
