I've just tried MSi's latest BIOS for my motherboard, which bears version number 1.80. The beta that preceded it was 1.85. It feels funny to update from 1.85 to 1.80.
Anyway...
Enabling EXPO gives me 1.3 VSOC on Auto, and for now, I've decided to leave it at that and do some testing.
- Idle temperature has increased by about 3 °C (from 41 to 44). I could lower it by not running my AIO in semi-passive mode, but what's the point?
- With stock TDP and PPT (105/142 W), load temp stays below 94 °C, and the Cinebench score is down to 19,200 from around 19,500 with the beta BIOS and 1.2 VSOC. My theory is that the higher VSOC eats more away from the PPT, so there's less power headroom left for the CPU cores, ergo the score loss and slightly lower temperature.
- Idle package power consumption with background programs running (Steam, GOG Galaxy and the Wargaming.net client) is 28 W, which in Chernobyl terms is "not great, not terrible", I guess.
Now, should I leave it, or should I drop EXPO and shave 10 Watts off of the idle power consumption? It's not like I notice the difference in performance anyway.
