Benchmark Scores Nyooom.
I've just tried MSi's latest BIOS for my motherboard, which bears version number 1.80. The beta that preceded it was 1.85. It feels funny to update from 1.85 to 1.80. Anyway...

Enabling EXPO gives me 1.3 VSOC on Auto, and for now, I've decided to leave it at that and do some testing.
  • Idle temperature has increased by about 3 °C (from 41 to 44). I could lower it by not running my AIO in semi-passive mode, but what's the point?
  • With stock TDP and PPT (105/142 W), load temp stays below 94 °C, and the Cinebench score is down to 19,200 from around 19,500 with the beta BIOS and 1.2 VSOC. My theory is that the higher VSOC eats more away from the PPT, so there's less power headroom left for the CPU cores, ergo the score loss and slightly lower temperature.
  • Idle package power consumption with background programs running (Steam, GOG Galaxy and the Wargaming.net client) is 28 W, which in Chernobyl terms is "not great, not terrible", I guess.
Now, should I leave it, or should I drop EXPO and shave 10 Watts off of the idle power consumption? It's not like I notice the difference in performance anyway.

AMD: 1.30v is the MAX, do NOT go over this
Board makers: 1.30v default, and we go over that with LLC

SoC absolutely eats into your PBO limits - it's why we advise people to tune it in, in the first place. Most of the idle wattage on AM4 comes from the SoC wattage, rather than the cores.

I cant right now, I need to buy a new GPU :(

My sons 980 Classified gave a really weird uefi error last week. I will give him my 3070 TI..

GPU prices suck. I am looking at an open box 4080.
reflash the vBIOS?

I've dealt with some weird UEFI errors lately especially with gigabyte motherboards once you disable CSM (to enable rebar)
It's like UEFI forces 16:10, which causes display issues and input lag in the BIOS and that results in no image sometimes, so you can power cycle the system without knowing its working and end up with the BIOS resetting after failed boots, thinking its various errors based on when you got annoyed with it and rebooted

Dammit, one more reason to buy that X3D! Stop it!
I friggin love how little my x3D cares i'm running C18 on DDR4

The cost of CPU was less than 32GB of C14 RAM here

Yup, new system after Xmas, 3 years in use :)

it has not been 3 years since you bought the 5800X3D, traitor :D

I'm planning on sitting on this one for a while. I love the Caselabs more with every passing day. Other cases I would have started to get bored of them months ago. Strike Eagle dropped this week and it only took half a year to finally feel like I am fully enjoying the potential of 5800X3D/4070 Ti and my VKB gear.

Past few weeks I've been discussing things with a friend who's been slowly getting parts for their build. Also went through 3 Rembrandt laptops in the past week......all are either returned or on their way back to the seller. When you take a step back, it really puts into perspective how stupidly expensive various things are nowadays. Ain't broke don't fix :)

What paste did you use?
XTM70 is what I got. Supposed to be rather quite good.

Free?????
Yes, free. I still have some friend in the industry.

The joys of being a tech journalist?
Technically ex journalist, at least outside of the news I posts I do here, so more a benefit of still having a few friends in the industry that are still willing to throw me a bone once in a while.

Back in the day when I worked at PCW and we did group tests, we'd end up with 10-20 boards left that got shared around the office and then shared with friends and family.
I used to end up with at least something like five motherboards or five graphics cards at the time, but then again, it wasn't as expensive hardware back then either.
That was without asking to keep things, the companies simply didn't want review hardware back. Rarely got the bits I really wanted, as I was third or fourth to pick, even though I did most of the work... CPUs and memory was never something I really ended up getting for free though, but even so, every part counts.

From what I understand, that's not how it works these days. Most things are being returned or circulated to other media for further reviews.

This question was answered for me by another hangup during boot today. It looks like either my CPU or my board is not entirely happy with 6000 MHz RAM (or maybe it's the 3000 MHz UCLK?). I've also noticed that FCLK dropped from 2000 to 1800 MHz after I restarted the system without changing anything in the BIOS. Man, MSi's BIOS is weird.

But now I'm even more tempted to get a 7800X3D... if I can't run my RAM with EXPO, I might as well have a CPU that doesn't really need it anyway. :D

First time I ever heard of the stuff. I’m old-school, I used Arctic Silver.
Haven't used their stuff in years. Was using Gelid GC-Extreme for a long time, as I was given a big syringe of it.
We'll see if it's as good as claimed, could only find a couple of obscure reviews, but even according to them, it should edge out most of the competition.
The biggest problem is that to many companies don't provide useful data for their thermal paste, such as thermal conductivity, which means you end up buying the pig in the sack sometimes. The XTM70 also ended up being free, courtesy of my better half who works for said company.

I am looking at going to AM5. The 5800x3d doesn't quite have the performance I want in one perticular game. The 7800x3d is as much performance as I can ask for right now

I could've bought the 5900X, the price is the same as a 5800X3D around here anyway. But I couldn't find the reason for it. I barely use 5800X3D, let alone something with double the cores.

I will say, sometimes application launch times do get on my nerves with the 5800X3D. 5900X seemed to be quite a bit faster. Though, 7800X3D is not much different in either ST or MT.

Still, it's not enough to make me budge, but the pure application ST of P-cores really is hard to beat.

The new F-15E seems to be a big step up in terms of CPU usage and avionics complexity. Even in the past few months with multithreading DCS has already been stressing the 5800X3D a lot harder than before and most other games (often gets as hot as Cinebench). Now the Strike Eagle has a slider that allows you to allocate as many background threads as you want. Still not sure if it makes a real difference, or if it tops out at some point, but I do wonder if pure 8C/16T will still be favoured in the near future. It sounds like P+E could stand to gain from the F15E's new feature.

Oh yeah, 5900X is quite a bit faster in just about everything, but with my settings it was too much :D

I was playing with 250/170/200 with regular PBO, and it was a little better than my curve results using the AMD section in the back. But the CPU was getting up to 1.535v for the boosts :D

My X3D is super easy to cool, like a 5600X. And I get what you are saying about P cores.. I do have my little Strix B660 board for some basic Intel action :D

My G14 2022 is arriving today, I think in reviews I saw it's 6900HS thrashing the 5800X3D in ST. Maybe I'll just do PS and Premiere on laptop instead lol

I have it, but it doesn't run yet. I still need ram and a CPU. I do have a Pentium in the box for a bios flash since it has one of the early betas on it. Its a Strix B660i, just a teeny tiny little thing :)

Honestly, I am still quite content with AM4, and I can see myself using it for at least another year or two. I just want a new GPU :)

7950X3D. 4.6L case.

I barely use 5800X3D, let alone something with double the cores.
More cores. MOAR CORES!!!

I have an eight-core processor (7700X) that I barely use a good majority of the time but damn is it nice when I'm playing a game, compiling a C++ program from source, or firing up a Hyper-V VM.

WCG will use all of them, right now my X3D is sitting at 108w PPT. And with all of my rainbow fans it is not so industrially loud :D

More like heavy breathing..

I gave up on Intel with LGA1700. I see way too many cooling issues here on the forum with anything faster than a Core i3. I'm also not very keen on heterogenous architectures on desktop.

I don't even like it on mobile. The way I see it is that by Intel having to chop AVX-512 out of their consumer chips just to be able to make their E-Cores is going to be a detriment to the whole industry. Yes, there might not be much of a need for AVX-512 now, but what about in the future? That will leave Intel flatfooted like they were when AMD came around and kicked their asses with the debut of Zen 1.

Technically ex journalist, at least outside of the news I posts I do here, so more a benefit of still having a few friends in the industry that are still willing to throw me a bone once in a while.
Thats how i get the odd goodies too, sadly my friendliest contacts are all gone - 3DChipset vanished overnight, and OCZ died after the SSD failures ate into their income too fast :(
I'm also not very keen on heterogenous architectures on desktop.
I'm interested as long as it's done correctly - and i see the E-cores as an absolute failure when they're less efficient. AMD's C cores seem far more interesting, since their basic performance is identical to the regular cores, just with less cache - giving 8 cores with 3D cache and 8/12/16 with 1/4 cache for memory intensive tasks seems like a perfect way to balance the system, since performance is still equal for most tasks between the cores.
