Sometimes you just gotta crossdress your RAM, i guess

Good: corrected the SPD on the RAM
Bad: It thinks it's samsung now

The point is that even with strong fans (ie. T30), it is still cheaper while outperforming its usual "competitors" (D15, DRP4, etc.). But seeing as it is not available in the UK, that's the end of that I guess. Don't buy it for a bad price.

Deepcool has the AK620 in a couple colour schemes. It's a good performer comparable to PA120, with a generally understated design that is a bit sleeker than the PA120 and FC140. I personally take a shine to the silver/black one. Prices on Amazon.co.uk seem reasonable.

DeepCool AK620 CPU Air Cooler, 6 Heatpipes, Dual-Tower, 2 x 120mm Fans, LGA1700 Compatible : Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games
This one is available, though it's £60, which is about the same price as the Dark Rock 4. It looks awesomely sleek, though. :)

I admit, I'm a little bit partial to be quiet! not just because of the theme of the build, but also because all of their coolers use the same mount, so I wouldn't have to swap it (I'm lazy as heck).

And that's Gigabyte, not even some third party crap, right?

I'd better banish RGB from my system as well as AIOs, I guess.

Several brands back then bundled third party crapware with their mobo software, but gigabyte are the worst IMO because it' STILL there.
New products dont have it, but they never went back to remove it from older ones - firmware update for my non RGB monitor installs patriot SSD and RAM RGB software, for NO F*CKING REASON.

With the DP cable changed and the RAM crossflashed (i didn't realise i was changing brands doing that, lol) that system is finally booting reliably
No wonder i had conflicting results fixing the RAM up, because the DP cable broke cold boots

This one worked wonders on the i7-11700. That's why I bought it, because the Shadow Rock LP just wasn't good enough for a 170-ish W Intel CPU. It's ironic that it gets its ass kicked by the same small cooler on AM5.
Some AIO's work well on Intel CPU's but shit on AMD and there are ones that work well on AMD CPU's but shit on Intel units despite them all say they're compatible with all modern CPU's you just need to find one that works well on AMD or go custom loop

installs patriot SSD and RAM RGB software, for NO F*CKING REASON.
yeah sounds just like Asus and the Armoury crate it does the same thing I just delete/uninstall it and carry on armoury crate still seems to work without it but you're right It shouldn't be installing it if it's not in your system it's just a lazy installer that installs it all regardless without any checking to to see what you have and only installing what is needed

Those extra product RGB installs always bothered me too but I did like I could just run RGB Fusion stand alone. Actually I just formatted and I save my user folder. I need to go poking around in App Data because I saw bits of go buy when I as copying back my data. You can remove those “extras” in Add/Remove programS that’s what I always did
MSI is not “worse! But I am forced to install MSI Center to be able to install the RGB software. But like RGB Fusion it’s just set and forget. Nothing needs to be running. It just adds a service as expected.

Yep. You don't even need MSi center to be installed. Asus on the other hand, gives you rainbow puke until the software starts up. I generally prefer Asus, but MSi is so much better in this regard!

I just reinstalled Windows and it was literally the first thing to pop up asking to install drivers…if I don’t MSI Center then I’ll definitely get rid of it but that said i really only open it once to set my RGB
Don‘t think I don’t know about ASUS I had to live with AISuite because I had the Z97 Sabertooth and could only control the small fans on the board with it….

I think I'll just rid myself of all RGB for now. Not because I'm against RGB, far from it, but because I can't be asked to deal with all this motherboard vendor software.

Not wrong, AM4 was my first real experience with RGB it’s been hit and miss so I wouldn’t disagree with jus turning it all off. My case is on the floor on the left side of my desk I don’t see it anyway.
This LED is more to me as it’s all I use for ambient light when I game

yeah sounds just like Asus and the Armoury crate it does the same thing
What corrupted the ram was asus armoury aura/crate and gigabyte installing the same software in their own directories and forcibly running it, so two versions of the patriot ram software tried accessing non-patriot ram

OpenRGB has been tricky to learn at first because it's made by programmers, not to be beginner friendly - but once you're past the first few hurdles (mostly, it doesnt translate and hide the quirks of YOUR hardware like the OG software does) it becomes amazeballs

On boot my system loads a "KB only" profile with all RGB disabled, except a custom keyboard profile - i can then switch to the fancy animated effects manually if i wish

I’ve been tempted to try it but really the only thing that actually needs to dealt with is my RAM which goes rainbow puke until you change It to something else. I ob like blue so I rarely even have to run the software anyways…but I HATE RaInow Puke! I kinda miss my previous Corsair RAM it just remembered. I installed iCue set the colour uninstalled iCue(thank Jebus) and never had to touch them agIan I think all RAM should be like that…

My problem with OpenRGB is that the range of hardware it recognises is fairly limited. I had an Asus TUF 6500 XT that I wanted to keep as a spare card, but it gave me rainbow puke every time I installed it into a non-Asus system, which was super annoying. It didn't work with OpenRGB, unfortunately.

I've a mate who's running Mint + Cinnamon on my old x470 + R5 2700(non X) and 16GB TridentZ DDR3200 and it's really fast like twice as fast as when I ran it with Windows 10 it's just really snappy and quick even with using flatpack programs they open quicker than the equivalent windows installed program he's really happy with it

If it's anything like modern Zen, you'll need the chipset software installed, then the slider in the power settings moved all the way to energy saving. I remember you also had to have the Ryzen optimised profile selected on Zen 2.

Nope, no zen2 stuff here. Although it did offer ryzen balanced plan. Didn't work. I tried all settings, cpu min to 20% ect... it won't downclock.
Under linux it stays at 2200 and .86v until a load is put on it. Under win10 it just stays at 3.7 and 1.27v which is max I set. Not that it matters much,
don't use windows a lot.

Window's clock reporting doesn't work well on modern CPUs, especially Ryzen. Don't believe what task manager says. Look at the effective clocks in HWinfo instead. ;)

If you ran it before the last major update, they'd added thousands of devices but you had to run the nightly to access them

Since that major update, i'm yet to run into anything not recognised

windows polls roughly every 15ms, ryzen updates every 1ms
Windows also assumes all cores are running at the same speed, and can't tell if they're sleeping - nothing can (hence effective clocks, mathing out their average)

When was that? I tried it a few months ago, the Tuf 6500 XT wasn't supported back then (and since then, I sold it).

That's why your max boost speed also isn't reported. Windows reports 4.75-4.85 GHz on my 7800X3D when most of the cores run at 4.8 GHz, with a couple of them touching 5.05 GHz every now and then under light loads.

major update was
Release 0.8 (November 27, 2022)

But the nightlies are well, nightly - this is where their website lets them down

OpenRGB
Major releases page show nothing since 0.8 in nov

but the main page of the website, has the full list

AMD 6000 are listed in both, but doesn't specify the 6500XT - asus for example replace the RGB controller with their own hardware, which is listed seperately

Yep... it's a pretty small list compared to all the devices out there, unfortunately. :(

I appreciate the gesture, and I firmly believe that an open, vendor-agnostic RGB standard is the way to go, but unfortunately, this isn't enough.

Another update:

The Dark Rock 4 arrived yesterday, I installed it this morning and let it run a bit.

First results:
Cinebench all-core: the CPU kept hovering between 4825 and 4850 MHz throughout the 10-minute run, just like it's written in the big book. 18,000 points with my background launchers running, 18,300 without. 84 W max package power, 81 °C max package temp (even with Auto PBO enabled), and it's quieter than the AIO even with a mildly aggressive fan curve. What magic is this, and which planet have I been living on in the last couple of years? o_O

A detailed account of events and pictures are coming in my build log shortly. :)

Dark Rock 4 or Dark Rock 4 Pro? Seems about right for DR4. Maybe less impressive on the part of the air-cooler, more just embarrassing performance from the AIO.

Why auto-PBO any single CCD CPU? Seems pretty counterproductive.
