Silent Hill 2 Remake Performance Benchmark

This game looks SHOCKINGLY bad for the performance its putting up. Honestly thought it was a remaster of the original rather than a completely rebuilt game using UE5. It reminds me of the OG Alan Wake that I played through recently (with some nicer shader effects) than something developed on a cutting edge engine.

These graphics and 144FPS/1440P on a mid-range (4070/7900GRE) level card? Yeah Ok.

These graphics and 50FPS/1440P on a mid-range card? GTFO.

I've always been a Resident Evil guy and was looking forward to getting into the Silent Hill games through this port but lol nope.

UE5 is a GPU killer and only a handful of games and demos have been able to justify the high HW reqs with amazing graphics, the rest are pretty much last gen/meh graphics only with the same high GPU resources needed to run

Lol you might as well play this on Low. There's almost no perceptible difference. Yeah, some lighting is more pronounced in higher settings. Okay.

Overall, I don't for a second understand why this look costs this performance. Even at low, 90 odd FPS is pretty terrible. Yeah its atmospheric - guess what, the PS2 version was too.
I've said this many times but Lumen only makes sense if you use the hardware variation. Software Lumen is just the worst of both worlds; the performance cost of RT with low fidelity results. Hardware Lumen looks so much better and depending on how you use it, it doesn't even cost much more performance than software Lumen.

Hardware manufacturers: stop the competition, x3 the GPU prices.
Game developers: make games that look no better than 10 y.o. cat B shooters but still require a top-shelf GPU to run somewhat OK at pedestrian resolutions.

We saw that kind of sinister gfx and dark mood with a comparable pressure on GPUs in Alan Wake II ,albeit better looking.

AMD failed at this, how can 7900 xtx stay even behind 4070ti non super is beyond me. No wonder why AMD had to lower 7900 xtx's price to 4070 ti's level.
I would be pointing the finger at the dev's a 4090 cannot even do 4k 60

Works. This seems to disable Lumen and all the other advanced DX12 stuff (RT option in the menu is missing, too).

Not a huge visual downgrade, so definitely workable
So, as I suspected, the minimal visual differences in UE5 titles are not because UE5 does a great job at handling RT in software, it's because it does a poor job at handling it in hardware.

Anyway, dark atmosphere aside, those screenshots made me feel like I was looking at HL2.

The low and max settings visual difference is absolutely comical.

Imagine showing this to someone from 10 years, graphics barely any better and performance is in the gutter.

The hardware requirement is insane when you consider the RTX 4090 is running slightly above 100 FPS at 1080p. I mean seriously, are they making game or are they making a CGI movie here? What s the point of a game that runs badly on 95% of the GPUs out there? Also, what is the point of spending significant effort to beautify a game when only 5% or less of the population will ever get to enjoy these eye candies?

For AMD hardware, it seems like it doesn't do well with UE4 and now UE5. I've observed that recent titles with UE5 engine results in poor performance with AMD GPUs. Strangely, UE5 seems to do better on consoles running AMD GPUs.

-Oh man I wonder what games are going to look like in 2024! Wow they're going to be like real time pixar movies or something aren't they?

*Shows them Silent Hill 2 Remake*

WTF?! But at least the game runs at like 500fps or something on the top end $650 video cards right?

I feel even if it was marginally better, is it really worth the performance hit? Silent Hill is a fairly slow paced game, so lower FPS is still acceptable. But I still cannot get over the fact that a RTX 4090 is running at 110 FPS @ 1080p.

Another dev not optimizing for AMD. Wukong, Outlaws and now Silent Hill. i will no longer buy games from developers that don't optimize for AMD. and to AMD owners please don't buy these unoptimized games.

If AMD owners don’t buy games developers won’t optimize for customers they don’t have. Then people buy less AMD products because there aren’t any new games that run well on them.

The only people affected are AMD owners. But if it makes you feel better, you go do you.

Damn that's heavy. 1080p under 60 for a 3080, woof. Also it reeeally doesn't like Radeon cards, losing huge perf there compared to most games.

Seems like that will happen in various games regardless. If anything they should be optimising for RDNA more since the consoles use it.

Talk about an unoptimized crap, oh boy. 1080p and only 110fps on a $2000 RTX 4090. Especially terrible optimizations for AMD GPU's, talk about devs not bothering at all about optimizations and just releasing crap, stuttery games.
I keep saying old engines are better. :)

Too lazy to allow DLAA. :(

This explains why UE5 is so bad in perf for games.

Ahh yeah I remember this video, part of it shows a game dev raising the issue with UE5 dev's who responded with a "wont fix".

I am extremely tired of developers using technologies like frame-generation and DLSS as a crutch for their poor optimization, even worse, you get nVidia that cripples their cards right out the gate and then asks a ransoms price to boot.

This hobby is just not what it was anymore, there is just no excitement when you know the above is always at its worst.

By the same token you could show people hellblade 2 and fairly blow them away with geometric detail and character animation.

This just seems absolutely atrocious and I don't see the relationship between hardware required VS visual return. It's pretty shameful. Silent Hill 3 on my XP retro box looks great still and runs on the smell of a wet fart.

I think the developers want to capture the authentic feeling of Japanese made games that run like crap on high-end PC, aka Elden Ring, Monster Hunter and many others

Yikes. Although to be fair... looks like you can drop the settings allot for some massive FPS gains with some pretty subtle differences in visual quality. This might be one of those titles where user chosen optimized settings and engine.ini tweaks are king.

But by default... AMD, nVidia or Intel... the performance vs the visuals at the top end settings are... just brutally not worth it.
