Arena Commander 1.1 is going live on the PTU today (public test universe - the test server as opposed to the live arena commander server). Additions include:
  • New damage system added on some ships (more to be ported soon)
  • Gladius fighter is flyable
  • Retaliator bomber in hangar
  • New landing guidance system
  • Ability to earn REC which can be used to buy/rent items in game (these items are virtual in that they only exist in arena commander and will not be usable when the game universe launches later this year
  • Free flight mode is now multiplayer, so you can be in a non-combat orientated mode with friends.
There are other things but these are the main ones I found interesting. We should be getting a monthly report and the retaliator brochure tonight as well. Good times.

Seems the retaliator's having issues (hence the PTU release and not a full release). The brochure's been delayed to when 1.1 goes live for everyone, but we'll get a video of it tomorrow while they work on whatever bug has stopped it being deployed in the current PTU 1.1 patch.

Considering they hit ~65 at the two year mark and we still have at least another year to go, I'd say it's plausible.

I really don't understand why are they asking for so much money. At this rate the game should be free to play, because they've already made a fortune from donations. Even if their team is 100 people, there's no way in hell development would cost this much, even if all of them flew from USA to Australia every week.
Seriously, how much does a good programmer cost per month? A graphic designer? And an office with 100 chairs?

In ns2, the reinforced patch cost $500,000. I think it took not much more than I month to make. Most of the cost came from art assets and so on from what I have heard. Game making is expensive stuff.

I am well aware some professions are hugely overpaid and some skills are a) difficult do get and b) in great demand, but that still doesn't explain why a patch for a game (what's ns2?) would cost half a million dollars. Or why a game like SC would cost $100 millions.

It's seriously interesting topic. What's SO expensive about game development? I totally understand that programmers in such projects have to be really skilled, and so do the artists. Their salaries are most probably very high even by the industry standards. The management definitely gets a shit ton of money as well. There are licences for proprietary software, office rent for tens to over a hundred people, which probably cost a lot. But that still doesn't explain why development of a large game should cost tens of millions of dollars (or more).

The guy behind SC (what's his name again? All I can think about is "fatface" :p) probably won't have to do anything again in his life even if the game is a fail, and will be wiping his ass with $1000 notes.

Grand Theft Auto V cost over $200 million to develop and the scale of Star Citizen could easily exceed that for GTA5. The question is what is Roberts doing with all that money? Is he pocketing it? Is it keeping it in the bank for continued expansion of Star Citizen or another RSI project? I don't know but I think I would like to know. My hope is that once Star Citizen meets its original design goals, he hires a hundred or so people to start work on expansions to the original design goals (not unlike Payday with the addition of more characters, weapons, and heists). It would keep the game relevant long after it launches.

Only Roberts really knows what is happening with all of that money.


Figure about $60k per employee per year. 100 employees is a minimum of $6 million per year just for salaries (the largest expense of any game studio). We're two and a half years out from the original Kickstarter. I don't know how many employees RSI has but game development is costly anyway you look at it.

It costs a lot to develop some games and then a lot of cash has to be set aside for marketing also or the game will have poor sales. It's estimated that Elder Scrolls Online cost about $200 million to develop/market and SWTOR also 200 million and Destiny cost 500 million to develop and market.

It's seriously interesting topic. What's SO expensive about game development? I totally understand that programmers in such projects have to be really skilled, and so do the artists. Their salaries are most probably very high even by the industry standards. The management definitely gets a shit ton of money as well. There are licences for proprietary software, office rent for tens to over a hundred people, which probably cost a lot. But that still doesn't explain why development of a large game should cost tens of millions of dollars (or more).

The guy behind SC (what's his name again? All I can think about is "fatface" :p) probably won't have to do anything again in his life even if the game is a fail, and will be wiping his ass with $1000 notes.
A large game does cost this much money. Close to 400 people working on this game, all over the world. This is reality. When I said "find out", I didn't mean your opinion...
