Hi
I am Australian and the steam deck is not available over in the land down under
however i have the option for a family member to buy it and bring it overhere
Is there anything to know about this process?
will there be any problems since my steam account wont be the one to buy the deck?

I wouldn't think so, since you still have to log in when you set up the Deck. Nothing is stopping you from buying it with one account and logging in with a different one on it.

only thing im worried about is RMAING it
as that would be like 200 dollar return trip
Do you think when it comes available in Australia i will be able to RMA it in aus

I'd expect you'd be able to RMA once it's officially available, though it still doesn't look like there's a timeframe for when it'll release down there.

So, I bought the Fear collection, I only beat the original and wanted a look in on the dlc plus 2 and 3.

Spent two hours researching and modifying the first game to run on win 11 (main rig).

Still hadn't got my PS4 pad working either.

All the while it was downloading to the Steamdeck.

And no issues, no messing, it just worked, I did have to DL a controller config but way easier than windoze 11.

I'm still often surprised by the competency of this SD.

Still,

Any news on the official dual boot release yet ? I actually won't ditch steam OS at all but do wanna mess with windows on it.

Since I suspect the JSAUX dock killed my old Steam Deck, I went ahead and got the official one a couple of weeks ago.

Aside from some annoying display rotation stuff in Windows, it works perfectly.

Out of curiosity, today I plugged it into my laptop's Thunderbolt port, and it also works perfectly as a dock for that.

My laptop charges from it, and the dock's IO all works.

Ok so, I did something I said I would never do... I bought a Steam Deck! lol This thing is amazing can I join the club? I bought the 64gb version. I bought along with it a screen protector, cheap case for now well until my preordered dbrand killswitch comes in. lol Oddly enough the cheap case that I pickup from amazon for 6 bucks on sale is amazing. I'm almost tempted to cancel my Killswitch case order. I picked up a SABRENT Rocket 2230 NVMe 4.0 512GB High Performance PCIe 4.0 M.2 2230 SSD. Second day that I owned it I already opened it up and installed the new m.2 drive. It was super simple. The next thing I bought was some FrostSheet thermal pads. I picked up a best buy essentials brand usb-c 65watt charger and a 100watt cable. I think right not I like upgrading. lol I'm using my MS Surface mobile dock to play it on a monitor with my Keychron K6 Pro keyboard, Glorious Model D wireless Mouse and PS5 controller. I grabbed these stand as well. I have one at work and at home.. lol Cheap stand but super nice for the price. Oddly, I did this to play Elden Ring anywhere.. HAHA Damn you Elden Ring!

I haven't had a handheld gaming handheld since the DS. I missed having something portable. The Steam Deck plays every game I have tried flawlessly. Valve has made something magical.

Yeah, I have to say I like it way more than I thought. It's amazing and for the size of it I was very surprised at how lite it is to hold. I like my daughter's Switch OLed but I like the Steam Deck much better. I rarely ever play the Switch. I really like the track pads for fps games as well, but for the most part I've only been playing Elden Ring. haha

Just a heads up I'm using my Surface Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub dock and it works great for anyone interested, but if you don't have one I'd just get the official one. I'm just glad I had the Travel Hub. I rarely use it with my Surface Laptop 5. I just use my Dock 2 for the surface which does not work with the Deck.

When I ordered my deck, I was planning to install all sorts of emulators so I could play all my childhood games again. I wanted to get a dock so I could bring the deck to friends and family's houses and play classic Nintendo multiplayer games or whatever. I wanted to set it up as a potential laptop replacement in case I needed it for work while traveling. What have I done with my deck? 90% of my deck use has been playing Stardew Valley or Vampire Survivors for a bit before bed. I have played other games but I keep coming back to those two. I got a deck because it was a fun mobile PC. I use a deck more like a console though. I only went into desktop mode once.

Yeah, I'm mainly using it to play Elden Ring in bed.. HAHA but I did just install EmuDeck and it's really good. It plays Switch games better than my Oled switch. lol I really like the Oled switch but it does give me finger cramps for playing to long. I don't get that problem with the Deck and I'm surprised the IPS screen is way better than I thought it was going to be but I mean IPS are great screens too. I would love an Oled Steam Deck. I'm really thinking about buying the nreal air ar glasses. It would turn my setup in to an ultimate bed gaming setup.. haha I could dock it next to my bed and use the glasses and my PS5 controller. lol Damn, I'm lazy.. haha

Ok, I think I'm done modding my Steam Deck... for now.. haha I can't stop.. hehe I just updated the fan from the stock Delta fan to a much quieter Huaying fan. So far I have updated the m.2 from 64gb to 512gb. I just replaced the thermal compound with a Frostsheet. The frostsheet really doesn't make it any cooler but it does drop the rpm's on the fan, but looking back I think I would have just replaced the thermal paste with some better paste and just upgraded the fan. The Delta fan at full rpm sounded like one of my servers starting up.. lol

Just want to add that the fan mod is a must have upgrade. The fan now is so much quieter. It looks like Valve is shipping Steam Decks with the new Huaying fan, but they are still shipping the Delta fan which is true because that's what I got.. lol They did get ifixit to start only selling Huaying fans. The Steam Decks being shipped now with the Delta fans have a Foam insert to reduce fan noise, but mine did not come with the new insert. The one I linked above is the same one ifixit uses from what I've seen.

I was worried about the screen as well. I have the oled switch and honestly the IPS screen is really good. I much prefer my Steam Deck over my Switch Oled. I'm kicking myself for not buying one sooner. Plus, it's so easy to upgrade. If they do ever make an Oled model then I will just buy the screen and replace it. The 399 model is the way to go and just upgrade it. I was very surprised at how well the SD card works. The card i have has around 180mb/s read 130 write. I have a 512gb sd card and i bought a 512gb m.2.

I didn't think I would use it but now I'm using it more than my gaming desktop. lol It's not that it's better but it's so readily available to play any games. I love being able to hit the power button to turn it off in the middle of playing and then coming back to exactly where I left off.

@everyone
So, I have installed the new dbrand skin and case... I am torn on it. Honestly I think I prefer my amazon 5.99 usd case. I don't even know if I like the skin either. Now, don't get me wrong I love the packaging and the grips on the case are fantastic. I even prefer the joystick grips. I did opt for the hard shell cover and I'm glad I did because with this case it doesn't fit in my original case that comes with the steam deck.

I have to take the kickstand off. I bought it because it was the thinnest case, but all of that is ruined with this huge interchangeable attachment piece on the back and the kickstand they give you would hold a bike.. No shit, it's huge. The crazy part is that I want to love this case but at the end of the day it loses the whole reason I bought it and that was to be super thin and light. If I put the cover on it's 2-3 times the weight of the Steam Deck.. It's like a brick. I guess I'm going to see how well the return process turns out.

@Mindweaver do you have a detailed guide or a youtube video that shows how to install "apu's thermal pad with a frost sheet" also where do I get this "frost sheet" I am in USA

also, you said it only takes a few seconds to change the nvme drive, but in the Sabrent video he said it takes 30+ minutes, has the internal design changed since the original deck? or is he just slow/you fast?

Welcome to the club! Internally nothing has changed. I think he is taking extra precaution. After thinking about it you might spend 30 minutes the first time until you get your feet wet. lol The first time it took me probably 20 minutes, but the second time I opened it I was much faster. Just be sure to use a plastic Opening Pick tool to not mess up your case. I use this kit. You have to order the frost sheet from Frostsheet.

I bought this case until my dbrand Killswitch case arrived, but actually I like the cheaper case better. lol I picked up these right angle usb c cables. They did upgrade the fan on for the Steam Deck from a Delta fan to a Huaying. They are still shipping them with the Delta fan but have a new damper in it. The Huaying fan is much quiter than the loud Delta fan. It sounds like one of my servers starting up.. lol I bought this fan and replaced it when I put the frostsheet on and it's been awesome.

EDIT: @Space Lynx the Steam Deck is 10% off this week! That means the lower model is only 359.10 USD! That is a steal for that price.

just got it for $359. can't beat that. i have a 512gb microsd collecting dust at the moment too. so i can just slot that in. that will hold me over for now until the 2230nvme drives come down in price.

I may have ordered one as well. :rockout:

Now to decide SDXC or replace the eMMC with an NVMe first.

I found a 256gb Samsung nvme steam deck replacement on Amazon for $29. I had $15 points on my credit card to use, so I got it for $15. That combined with my 512gb MicroSD card... should be good to go for quite some time.

Fairy easy to install it and upgrade it:
