Works with Gigabyte Windforce r9 270x 2gb ddr5, I need to increase the voltage value to get a better OC

I executed WEB7 and when I imported the original bios of my r9 270x 2gb Gigabyte Windforce the following message appeared:

When loading an original BIOS:

image UEFI detected! The modifications only affect the legacy BIOS, the UEFI part will be disabled.

What does that mean ? I created a Bios Mod by changing only the voltage from 1,206 to 1,250, so I got a better OC through Radeon Settings, applying Bios Mod to the problem? Am I at risk?

It means that this Mod disables UEFI interface of the Video Bios, you are just left with the "Old Skool" Bios interface.

He Guys,

I did some search and looked in this thread but couldn't find much about the msi r9 280 gaming. I could not unlock the voltage regulator so I tried to mod the bios but the card would fail after putting it under some load (i suspect because it would enter the changed 'state'). I flashed it back to the normal bios. yes I did save it. Now i was able to unlock the voltage regulation in afterburner with some help and looking around but the card seems to enter some failsafe mode if i do with 500mhz core/ 150mhz mem (or reverse not sure anymore, sorry). Anyone experienced similar problems or has a solution I looked around a little and this card seems supported. I know this program won't be edited and that is not my question. Might it be that the voltage regulator has can't be programmed? I hope someone can help me. please don't get mad right away if this isn't the right place to ask but I figured this was the best place because it still seemed a little active. I tried my best doing some research but the r9 280x seems to voltage unlock when using a newer bios though I couldn't find anything about the r9 280.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Did you increase the power limit? If you want to upload the Bios here I will take a look for you.

Hi my friends,
I have this card Gigabyte R9 280x (GV-R928XOC-3GD (rev. 2.0) )
There is bios "015.041.000.000.000000".
I bought this card from secondhand. There is set TDP Limit (%) 50 and TDP (W) 275 - "Tahiti [my].rom"
When I downloaded bios from "www.techpowerup.com" I found that origin values are set TDP Limit (%) 20 and TDP (W) 221 - "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom"

I tried overclock my bios "Tahiti [my].rom" downloaded by "GPU-Z". I used MSI Afterburner and I found max together values for Core Clock (1120 Mhz) and for Memory Clock (1630 Mzh). I tested at Valley benchmark (UNIGINE Benchmarks) and those are OK. Than I set both those values to my "Tahiti [my].rom" at position #0 by bios editor "VBE7" and than loaded it to card and rebooted PC.

Than I started "GPU-Z" and game "Crysis 3". During playing this game I am looking at the sensors and there are still values Core Clock (1100 Mhz) and for Memory Clock (1500 Mzh) and there is not any boost.

Bellow there are attached zipped files with my bios "Tahiti [my].rom" and origin "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom". Please unzip files.
I have this builded PC: "https://www.czc.cz/1a5s8djnlcir4a29ld57foefng/seznam".

Please could anyone edit origin "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom" and set my max. values at current positions?

Appologize my poor English.
Thanks a lot.
robinsoncz

@robinsoncz I'm not sure what you want done. Or even what exactly the problem is. Or why you think you need help with it.

Anyway...I changed "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom" to be, basically, the same as "Tahiti [my].rom" except with the PowerPlay #0 clocks set to 1120/1630. I also swapped the fan profile with the one from "Tahiti [my].rom", since it wasn't the same as "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom". I then reactivated the UEFI GOP module and fixed the checksum. And then updated the UEFI GOP module to a patched version of the latest non-Vega UEFI GOP, saving it as "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128_updGOP.rom". That way if you want UEFI GOP boot to work you can use it instead. If not, then just use "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom". There's no other difference between them, except the functionality of the UEFI GOP module(or lack thereof). GPU-Z(and other tools) will still show that the UEFI GOP module is present, and/or activated, in "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom". And it actually is. But UEFI GOP boot will still not work, because modifying the legacy portion of the vBIOS(clocks, TDP/power limits, etc.) breaks the signature in the UEFI GOP portion. Hence the need to use a patched UEFI GOP version.

So...that's what you're getting. If it's not what you wanted, let me know. I can probably make it happen.

EDIT: If you find that UEFI GOP boot doesn't work with "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128_updGOP.rom", try without secure boot enabled. Then it should work.

Hi MrGenius, thank you for your reply.
I used your corrected no UEFI GOP bios "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom" and then I updated the last driver "win7-64bit-radeon-software-adrenalin-edition-18.3.4-march23". Now graphic card works properly with this bios. Now I can see Core 1120/Memory 1630 in GPU-Z during playing game (Crysis 3) . Maybe I will try edit higher values for Core and Memory by "VBE7" ulitity. I am satisfy with your corrected bios "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128.rom"

I do not know how to use UEFI GOP "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128_updGOP.rom". I did not find how to flash it and how to set it. Please can you write step by step tutorial how to use it there?

Thanks a lot.

Hi guys. I have a problem with a 270x bios.

Idle or minimun fan RPM are way too high. His decided to set minimun rpm at 1400RPM.

I want to make it a little lower, dont know, something like 1000RPM at idle/minimun seems more correct.

I was thinking about using vbe7, but problem is I need uefi stuff. There is a way to edit the fan curve without breaking uefi? MSI AB cant go lower than 20% (1400RPM) cause it´s probably hardcoded into bios. AMD overdrive lets you go to 0%, but has 0 effect, remains at 1400RPM.

Bios is this one https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/149102/his-r9270x-2048-131107-1

Thanks

To answer your question..... if you Mod the bios, you will lose UEFI, there may be a workaround posted a little back (post 1,128) but I don't think CURACAO is supported in any case (see 1st post).

Hi. Thanks for your answer.

Yes, I read all the pages, even downloaded a "fix" for eufi that I can apply to my edited bios and says "fixed". But there is little to no info if this really works. I guess it´s only for a couple of models.

Since windows is installed on uefi, it will probably not boot at all if flash the card with a break uefi bios.

Too bad, I hate the noise of this card at idle.

@robinsoncz Sorry for the late reply. Just flash "Gigabyte.R9280X.3072.131128_updGOP.rom" the way you would any other vBIOS. If you want to rename it first, that's fine too. It doesn't matter what the name is. I also just found a later UEFI GOP version that's compatible with your card. So I updated it again(from 1.63 to 1.65). I've attached the updated file below.

@trihy First, VBE7 can be used with the vBIOS you linked to. Next, it will still boot after being edited. But the UEFI GOP module will be deactivated, and UEFI GOP boot will not work. Even if you reactivate it with a tool(or manually with a hex editor). The reason is due to the breaking of the signature in the UEFI GOP module in the vBIOS. If you want to have UEFI GOP functionality with a modded vBIOS you have to use lordkag's patch for the UEFI GOP module. Which fixes(effectively bypasses) the signature.

If you want to learn how to do that, you can read through the following thread. And figure it out on your own.
https://www.win-raid.com/t892f16-AMD-and-Nvidia-GOP-update-No-requests-DIY.html

If you want me to do it for you, then make whatever edits to the vBIOS you want to make and attach the file to a post here. I'll update the UEFI GOP module to the latest compatible version with lordkag's patch applied, and attach the file to a post here.

Hi. Thanks for the help. I will take a read, but probably will need help.

I just want to lower the firs step of the curve to something around 10% (instead of 20%) to see how it goes.

I read everything I found about vbe7, but still Im not sure about some stuff.

If I only want to change the fan curve, should I edit only the fan curve? I read that vbe7 will use the voltage on state #0. Even if I dont touch the voltages vbe7 will set those at default? Cause voltage shown there is the maximun for this cards and will use lower voltages according to card asic. Voltage there is way higher than my card use in real use.

Should I change that too?

Sorry for my english and hope you can understand what Im trying to ask :)

Do you think windows will still boot if I break uefi? Im using a z97 board and win10 installed with uefi partition. If will boot, maybe I can try some bios editing until I find a good one, so then you can help me with uefi.

@trihy The safest method is to edit a copy of the vBIOS already on your card(use GPU-Z to make a copy). That way you don't have to worry about voltages, or power limits, or whatever else. If all you want to change is the fan curve, then just change that and leave everything else as it is. And yes, the card will still boot. But you will need to turn off any UEFI GOP boot features in the motherboard BIOS/UEFI first. Or you'll get a warning saying something like there's no UEFI vBIOS present on your card when you try to boot. My system gives me the option of having those features disabled automatically at the time it displays the warning. So it will boot without me needing to go into the BIOS/UEFI and disable any settings. But yours might not. In which case you'd need to manually change those settings.

Hi. Yes, thats the exact bios for my card. I even flashed that bios.

But when open with vbe7 it says VDCC 1206 on #0. And my card is using 1.150v. Will try to edit the fan curve, flash and see how it goes.

Edit. Well guys, flashed a moded bios with fan at 10%. Windows started normally. So i checked gpuz and uefi isnt checked. So bios flashed fine. Also did a bios backup, opened with vbe7 and was the moded one.

But, fan rpm didnt change at all. I guess this coolers cant go lower than 1400rpm.

Now shows 10% speed. But rpm are the same. I guess is a no go.

Thanks for the help.

You could add a resistor to the fan to decrease V and lower noise and speed.

Hi. Im a little familiar with 3 pin fan resistor mod.

But with 4 pins fan Im not that sure how to make it.

Anyone knows a good tutorial for them?

Thanks

Well one of those pins is for pulse-width modulation.

Have you tried using MSI afterburner, to set fan curves?

Hi, yes. Minimum is 20%. And 20% is 1400rpm for this card. A total nonsense. 1400rpm at idle (30C) and when gaming, barely goes to 1700-1800rpm (60C)

Poor fans choice from his. But saw other manufacturers doing the same. They dont care too much for noise level at idle.

Considering my cards fans are masked by case/cpu fan noise, either you have lower noise and higher idle temps or you have lower temps with higher noise.

You could always do a ghetto mod and put a bigger fan on it or get a Heatsink from Arctic, Thermalright, Thermsltske, Gelid etc.

Yes, all my case fans are at 1000rpm. No need for more rpm really. Having a 0db card was great for my build. But well, waiting for the VGA market to collapse to buy a current gen card.

Stick other fans to the vga and removing the stock ones could be a good idea.
