Total nonsense! Come on dude!
agreed, in fact you do see on Tom's PSU forum almost a dozen threads replied to or started in the past seven days so people do discuss PSU just like people discuss RAM timing or fans. I see a lot of hidden " I don't understand it so I don't want people who may know more about it proving me wrong. I just want to regurgitate a tier list and other marketing slogans" but that's my opinion.

. Where a lot of the PSUs get really creative is the whole box layout and the circuit board interfaces they use. some of the custom bus-bar connections and whole-edge-solder-joints are kind of crazy to me, but they're pretty sweet, and it's one thing that always fascinates me from a manufacturing perspective (think about making those repeatedly lol).
for someone against the forum (which is fine) you most certainly would add a lot to it ;)

Who said I was against it? I'd be happy to add to it. I'm an EE, so I find it all very fascinating. It's not the type of circuit I usually design, but I've dabbled lol (edit: I literally said "I'm not voting against it")

Every other PC component has its own forum, and yet the most important part of the PC system still doesn't.

And what the hell is wrong with all of these people just simply hating the idea? What is it up for you, are you losing something if the PSU forum is created?

Does it need to be so active and so important like this forum for example? Oh look, what's the latest topic in that forum, oh it's this one from the year 2011 with the last post from 4 years ago. Why is it locked, is it because people still asked questions 10 years after the OP? Boring topic I see.
@crmaris what do you think about this?

Plus for now some categories even smell like 00's. What the hell is today Overclocking and Cooling? Like some DIY water cooling from things bought in aquarium shop?

Or Cases/Modding/Electronics? This time glueing some sound-dampening material, dremel something, mounting HDDs in spectacular way or searching for state of the art LCD fan controller?
@W1zzard He has a good point. Now what's the issue with having a PSU forum, it's not like you need to hire someone for maintaining it, nor find another crew of moderators for guarding it to not become a bloodshed.
If the business is going well (your words), did you ever considered hiring someone just for rearranging the forum sections in a modern and a meaningful way, for the sake of newbies and veterans alike? Why not give us a section where we can discuss PSUs, and having all of that's coming out of it at one place? Community could benefit from this.

Great that we agree, but to me you cut out more important part of my post:

Imo it works best if any pc component has it's own dedicated part of forum. Eight such parts like computer typically consisting of eight main components: CPU, cooler, mobo, RAM, storage, GPU, PSU and case. Things like fans and coolers could or even should be put together, because topics mix with each other. Similarly with all kind of net stuff or expansion cards. Such order seems best to me, but maybe there's something against it my imagination don't get like ease of moderating or whatever.

Plus for now some categories even smell like 00's. What the hell is today Overclocking and Cooling? Like some DIY water cooling from things bought in aquarium shop?

These 00's aromas were more btw, not fitting order I find best and me exaggerating with subjective. You can clearly see it's Cooling, so know where to go, but whole title looks more like place about ocing your gear to the max using things world haven't seen before :D

I am against it. No need. People are not educated enough to comprehend it actually... especially when reviewers themselves can't even cope themselves together using term amperage instead of current. But other than that, the only thing they need to do is acutally measure sizes, do a lot more more pictures(put the damn ruler besides) of the critter and describe the fan modes. More? No need really, why? By the same logic let's haunt W1z do to proper EMI testing for GPUs also. Including also bombing the card with it to see how stable it is so all dudes living besides power transimssion lines or amateur radio towers can breathe at ease and buy the card. I am actually not exagareting about the issue, it certainly is a small RMA % experiencing such problems due to improper board design.

We do not need low quality content. Bloody nobody has time to fight with people who lack educational basis to understand reasoning and graphs, but if those are missing it defeats the whole purpose of having the forum and analyzing each specific PSU platform. It will be like a two blind persons assisting each other to walk across the street under red light.

This forum will not give the most important answer, that any PSU reviewer fails to do, it is fooling around for most parts. Will PSU x work with system Y and Y = ab + 2(c + e). No fake stamps and certification crap some do does answer that, due to being business not something helpful to the consumer as the ratings are abstract. SMPS was and will be a bitchy thing no matter what topology used. So doing any additional reviews is simply a waste of breath. There could even be large sample variantions at such large scale that doing some discussions about certain PSU is simply not objective.

IKR, I was trying to make my post as short as possible, I was reading a lot from different pages, and it was very late... Anyone interested could just click on an arrow, and it would get them there. I mean, I hope I'm not the only one using that feature. Cheers.

People are not educated enough to comprehend it actually...
:( Wow! This is as naïve, condescending and despicable as calling people stupid and lazy, and just as arrogant!

Did you know everything there was to know about computers, power supplies, anything at all when you first started getting into them? No! You were just as "stupid" and "not educated enough" as the rest. Did you suddenly gain this knowledge all on your own, or did someone take the time to write about it so you could, what is it called? Learn?

How quickly and conveniently some seem to forget they were newbies once too.

What is a forum but a place to share and learn!!!!!

This forum will not give the most important answer, that any PSU reviewer fails to do

So you are smarter than all the reviewers out there, huh? Amazing. Yet apparently it is beneath you waste your time and share all that advanced expertise you claim to know. Figures. People are uneducated enough to get it anyway, right?

So doing any additional reviews is simply a waste of breath
I didn't see where anyone is suggesting this new forum is for additional reviews. So it would seem you don't even know what this thread is about. You are just here to point out how great you are. :(

Here's a thought. Should the forum be created, DON'T visit it. DON'T subscribe to it. DON"T give it a single thought. I promise, NO ONE will miss you.

well said!!

I too fancy sharing the little-know-how we muster up along the way... thats what makes these online forums GREAT!

Also why are some members here so adamant to assume a PSU forum will fall into the devils in-depth arse of highly technical complexities which no-doubt for most of us is unnecessary. There are also way more simpler PSU-related queries and rather common ones when dealing with people who lack knowledge on the subject, for eg: inquiring about.....required wattage for a given system, getting up-to-date with current day offerings, whether existing older power supplies will fair well with modern day power demands, identifying less expensive units without falling victim to trash, seeking reputable manufacturers with well reviewed units, efficiency ratings, modularity types, SFX vs ATX form factor, eco-modes vs none, loud vs quiet, getting to grips with the various types of PSU connectors which come bundled in with their respective units, etc etc.... all of which I have dealt with many times on PCPP when helping others. Yep all of that 'simpler' talk exists without getting wet with a raging tsunami of in-depth technical intricacies.

I'm with Bill on this one... we all started from somewhere, lets not reap the rewards and deny others.

I wonder if someone could build a tier list using the reviews we have done specifically at TPU. Then maybe link back to them to members can check it out. Not sure if we have enough content, or if we have the info that might be useful to compare them to one another, maybe some enterprising member could take the plunge and earn the sticky if it looked good enough.

HB has a best of wattage list for his reviews that include 115v and 230v performance (one of the flaws of tier lists) from reviews on that site plus some other reviews Aris did on Toms, TPU, PCgamer, etc., It's far more valuable since the performance is easier to see, not all PSU line platforms necessarily perform the exactly the same across different wattage and input. Plus, instead of someone esle trying to interpret what the reviewer thinks, you have the actual reviewer putting the units in his order of personal preference.

edit. Perhaps a list of PSU that received TPUs "Highly recommended" and "Great Value" awards? Right now its a search feature but perhaps just a simple to read list? Similar to the old Brownze, Silver, Gold awards on Hardware Secrets.

Nice one @W1zzard

I'm curious though, how come CPUs never got a devoted sub of its own? As far as i can remember since joining TPU, like other forums, discussions around processors have always been hot topics with engagement in overdrive and in abundance. It would be nice to occasionally drop into these subs to see whats cooking (or what's cooked and left in the oven to rot). I usually look to the homepage 'recent discussions' to play catch up which is useful for regular observers but for the irregulars not so much.

I know i know.... you gave us an inch and now we are (well me) demanding a foot. The foot is the limit.

It fits with TPU's forum structure but I have to wonder what would prevent it from becoming, as you say, a black hole of misinformation like on Tom's Hardware? I used to be a regular there but haven't visited it in many years since they went downhill so I don't know the state of their forums anymore.

jonnyguru was the best PSU review site that the net has ever seen but there was some real knowledge and experience there. I wonder if something like that could be brought back to life here but in all honesty I am skeptical.
networking was worse there for a while...

Damn, you're right... There's no CPU section at all.

Every other PC component has its own forum, and yet the most important part of the PC system still doesn't.
Whoopsie.

Arguably CPU is only something you get enough of so it won't bottleneck the GPU, for most - gaming - purposes. :p

It sure has been somewhat sidelined compared to, say, 20 years ago. I observe that a lot of the discussions seem to be limited to the relevant club threads, or scattered among other things like Builder's Advice.

Glad to see a PSU section at last, though.

Kinda general hardware or overclocking. Considering that you're the first person bringing this up in 20 years not sure if it's such a big issue. It has never been my policy to create as many subforums as possible

I just noticed we had this section now. Should the PSU buying guide be moved into here? Or based on the date of it, should we try and do a new condensed version?
