Bought the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black for my sig rig but I didn't like the audible fans so it's on the 7700x. I still need memory so I can finally start testing
View attachment 323656
I'm a bit disappointed that you can't swap fans that easily, without ghetto modding of course

ninja edit: you can install 120mm fans but the heatsink is designed for 140mm
Hi,
Nice test bench I had two now just one and even it's in storage along with my entertainment center it hangs in I miss it that's my x99 system in there

Upgrading the 5600x to a 5800X3D

Maybe not the biggest upgrade but probably the last thing I'll do for awhile outside of maybe bigger drives.

yeah I was looking at a few game benches the other day, and at 1440p, a 7800x3d is only like 15-20 fps faster. some games its more of course, but the ones I play, really no reason at all to upgrade as a 1440p and soon to be 4k gamer.

Got a "new" gpu to replace my Vega, bit of a weird one though. RTX 3060 Mobile core stuck on an RTX 3070 board, made in China for mining of course.
Has more cores than a regular 3060 but is power limited to 80-90w or so and only has 6GB of memory which is honestly more than enough for the games I play.

Actually seems like a pretty nice card all in all. My only real complaint is that it has no fan control so they just run @ 100%, but I can fix that easily enough by connecting them to a mobo header instead.

Was about $195 Cad inc. Ship & Tax.

Final ‘Black Friday Week’ purchase arrived today in a Logitech PowerPlay mouse pad. Not really required but was sick of plugging the mouse in to charge all the time as well as freeing up a USB port on the back of the machine in not needing the G903 charging cable & RGB Corsair mousepad that was using plugged in for the G903 Lightspeed receiver (inserted into the USB pass thru socket on back of mousepad). Impressed by how much bigger the PowerPlay surface is compared to the Corsair surface (yes I know I could just use a large desk pad but wouldn’t have the charging in use feature) & that I have a choice of what type of surface I use with it (although both feel very similar to me but will try both out for longer periods to see which one I prefer).

Next purchase is a new desk & monitor arm for the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 49” monitor, but they are going to have to wait until the New Year now unless win the lottery or have some sort of windfall hit my bank account. time to research the desk although the Secret Labs Magnus or Magnus Pro look extremely tempting!

Why didn't you get an RX 6600 or, say, a 2060 Super for that quid?
No real reason, I just thought it'd be more interesting. Also either one of those would be close to $300 after everything so I don't think it was too bad of a buy for a 30-series card.

Edit: To clarify, I originally bought this just to tinker with not to use it in my daily. But as it turns out even at stock it beats out my oc'ed Vega while using less than half the power so I ended up just replacing that instead. ;)

Didn't know GPUs are rocket level expensive in Canada. $300 CAD would buy you a used 3060 Ti where I live (Russia).
it beats out my oc'ed Vega
If that's a 56 then it's no surprise. Vega 56 is rather slow even with OC.

That first fan looks like it'll block any memory stick around.
Will you swap it to the back of the cooler?
Yes it will, but I only installed it like this because I don't have memory yet. I did tested it when I installed it on my sig rig, I have low profile memory sticks so I raised the front fan a bit and it fits.
If you look where offset and staggered fins are it will become apparent he installed cooler backwards.
From Noctua's documentation, the NH-D15 looks symmetric, so no issues there.
However, according to the same documentation, it allows the use of 32mm tall RAM modules without raising the front fan. I'm just under the impression there's no memory that'd fit.
@nomdeplume as @wNotyarD said the D15 is symmetrical. The sig rig memory (G.Skill Flare X5 F5-6000J3238F16GX2-FX5) modules fit as long as you raise the front fan a bit.

I felt a bit silly when I realized my mistake and simply left a  under his comment. Was bit quick mentally arranging how you set it up for the picture.

Upgrading the 5600x to a 5800X3D

Maybe not the biggest upgrade but probably the last thing I'll do for awhile outside of maybe bigger drives.
I did it and have no regrets. My PC is purely for gaming tho I game at 3440x1440 so I'm probably not really working it too hard, but it's good to have one of the best gaming CPUs and certainly the best for AM4 which I will now "run out the clock" on it and see what the next gen brings. I have zero complaints about performance.

I game at 3440x1440 so I'm probably not really working it too hard
7900 XTX is a mighty challenge for any CPU, even for a 5800X3D. Even at UW1440p. Can't say you invested that for nothing.

Hold my beer. My 6700 XT is being tortured by a 4K monitor. Will upgrade when can afford anything that's faster than 4090. Prolly in 2 or 3 years from now.

3440 by 1440 is closer to 2K than 4K I guess. Sure the RTX 4060 isn't built for 2K but I will try to utalize DLSS, whatever tech nV will put there to just make sure I can game easily - I didn't game on PC for over 14 months now! So whatever on my plate will make me happy! I wish the Ti or 4070 or other cards made more sense, heck even the 16GB version on 4060 was useless - Reminded me of the good old GeForce 6200 Turbo Cache - so I chose the *Cheapest* 4000 series card and even the cheapest 4060 I can reach to... just a temp solution till we gamers get better options I hope.
