It could be that Windows is checking the drive for viruses when it is 'idle'

This is key. Especially with a metal enclosure, the surface heat in some USB drives indicates their design is doing its heat dissipation job properly, keeping the internal components below temps needed to sustain full performance.

Examples I've used which maintain full performance: Sandisk Ultra Flair, Sandisk Extreme Pro
Failed examples which overheat and throttle down: Sandisk Ultra Fit

It's a decade ago that I had issues with a USB drive getting too hot and that was a first gen USB 3.0 drive from Adata that in the end fried itself. Since then, zero issues, regardless of brand.

Knocked a beverage over my Leopold FC750R last week (it did not go well), so it has been replaced with a FC750RBT.
Replaced the black PBTs with a grey Varmilo set I've had around for a while.

More stuff for the future AM5 build.

The SSD was originally £62 but the price dropped to £59.99 so I added it to basket then for some reason Amazon gave me another £5 off so I paid £54 instead of £60.

I purchased the same 1TB SSD in April for £65 so Im not sure if its just Amazon Gods smiling on me but it would be nice is they could drop the price of the 7800X3D back to £313 or £300 instead of £340. That would help me get up the ladder than a few quid off this SSD. Not that im complaining

(this is going to be an OS drive)

Beside the Bud3 Pro I'd pre-ordered, I've also pre-ordered the Z Fold 6 1TB (after making the mistake of actually going to a telco shop to look at and tinker with a demo set. I've also ordered an Araree Fold 6 case which should arrive on the same day as my Samsung purchases, this coming Friday. Will be back with pics...

I dont need such a big drive for an OS drive. My current is only 500GB (reports as 464GB - old Samsung 970 Evo) and its been plenty. Still have 292GB spare.

I thought it would be better to start a new build on a clean slate then carry the old 970 over.

The other night I was looking at the 1TB. I did check the 2TB and it was still selling for £122 which is why I avoided it. But at £105, Im willing to have a think about it.

Well, let's not jump to conclusions. For all I know they made some "minor" modifications that disable OpenWRT without updating the model designation.

Ah, you did get one! Very nice! Did you cancel the 1TB? If not, get a USB to NVMe enclosure and use it for backups and file transfers.
