Although all the tabs and phones get one, in all these years i've never thought of buying a screen protector for my laptop. A bit of a weird oversight considering my laptop screens do end up with minor scratches over time but usually nothing observable with the screen lit up. I'm gonna look into grabbing one for my current lappie.
ThinkPads can sometimes leave marks on the screen from the keyboard or whatever, so it's a good idea.

There's also various options for scratch resistance, privacy (viewing angles), vivid colours, matte etc.

Last year's model, only downside seems to be the OLED screen draws a lot of battery, and new ultrabook Thinkpads don't have the two battery hot swap system, but the one i've bought is 1920x1200 IPS anyway so that's fine.

It's to replace a starting to be unreliable six year old i7 8550u Thinkpad T490S my parents use. Has a 2 TB SN770 in that for movies and other data, so will swap the M.2 and voila.

Got a case/screen protector too.

Was thinking about getting a Framework 13" for them, but even in it's third iteration it's still a little beta, plus it's over £1k for a Meteor Lake platform that won't even ship till September, by which point Lunar Lake/Arrow Lake will be out, plus I'm not a huge fan of the USB-C active hub for every port approach they take, since it drains battery, and they don't have a good track record of prompt BIOS updates.

Maybe in future.

though in my case it was given by work.

i have the matte finish screen with super nice colours. I dont get any marks on mine, been using it for 2 years now.

I am moving my Spam system from my Bitfenix M2022 case to a Lan-Li A3 Dan case with a Alphacool Eisbaer 360 cooler for over clocking and better thermals.

Case:

I like the case so far, it has allot of different internal configurations for the type of parts/cooling you are going to use in your build, like an optional vertical GPU bracket. I would like to see Lan-Li shrink this case down to an ITX variant.
Saaaame! I just re-homed my ITX build in one myself. :rockout:

CPU, RAM and VRM temps all dropped 8-10c! But my B650E-I's coil whine is way, waaaay more noticeable now. Gotta take the bad with the good I suppose.

Got a new case (ap201) as a gift, and bought myself an Arctic Freezer 36. Really happy so far, the PC runs quieter and cooler.

How large is the difference between PA (cancelled) and PS 120 or PS 120 EVO in the land of Pounds and Pence?

The exact difference to the penny was £3.49. So £3.50 for an extra heatpipe.

I do like the grey on this one though sadly. But hypes for pipes.

Purchased a spare power supply, but one with a design flaw...
The original EVGA 500W1 had a bridge rectifier that was only good for 3A without a heatsink and so would fail at full load (when on 110V); that has since been corrected. However, there is room for two bridge rectifiers on the board and so I took this route with the original supply (before it failed). Having got this far and having enough bridge rectifiers to fix a second unit, I opted for this route in order to have a cheap spare on hand that I could trust.

Disclaimer: do not mess with power supplies as the main capacitors can carry a lethal charge even when the supply is not plugged in.

I attach a picture of the new version (from the EVGA site) where a heatsink is clearly present on the bridge rectifier.

new model.jpg

As far as I can tell, the new version has some ribbon cables, while the old version did not (for people wondering how to tell them apart)

Yesterday my 12 year old 50" 1080p LG finally bit the dust so I ran out and got a Hisense 50" QLED 4K. It's a feather compared to the old LCD.

Decided to finally upgrade my nostalgic PC to 4GB of memory, so I ordered what purported to be a brand new set of four 1GB Kingston DDR400 DIMMs for $22.

20240709_142910.jpg

Right off the bat, I can tell that the modules aren't a matched set. All four PCBs have completely different layouts, and one of them is even slightly taller than the others.

Nonetheless, I threw all of them into the PC and tried booting Windows. It would hang on the "Starting Windows" screen.

Running Memtest86+ (the FOSS one), it always hangs at 55% (block move test). It doesn't report any errors; the system just locks up and needs a hard reset.

20240709_154328.jpg

This also confirms that all four modules are different. Only one of them reports as a Kingston, and I later found out that the "SK Hynix LEADMAX" one has slower secondary timings.

Weirdly, when I tested the modules one at a time, they all passed Memtest.

I took a closer look and found that while all four modules are different, each pair has matching memory chips.

20240709_165915.jpg
20240709_170150.jpg

One pair has Hynix HY5DU12822CTP-D43 chips, while the other pair has HY5DU12822DTP-D43 chips.

Eventually, I put each "matching" pair into a memory channel, and this time, Windows would fully boot. But it would eventually hang and require a hard reset.

Ultimately, I put a "matching" pair of the new modules in one channel and then put the faster half of the old memory in the other channel (2x512MB Samsung DDR400), and everything seems to be working now.

partial-ram-upgrade.png

The fact that they pass individually makes me wonder if my nostalgic PC's memory controller is getting tired after 20 years. This is compounded by the fact that everything seems to work with 3GB installed.

Only being able to run 3GB isn't a big deal, as with 4GB installed, only 3.25GB is usable despite it being a 64-bit CPU.

After all of this, though, I'm not sure what to think about this memory kit. While they all have Kingston stickers on them, all four DIMMs are different. And as you probably saw in one of the closeups, one of the DIMMs has lots of scratches on the memory chips. One of my thoughts was that this is a kind of "parts bin special" where they put working older memory and SPD chips on a new PCB, but that doesn't explain why all four PCBs are different.

I'll be contacting the seller and see what they end up saying.

edit: in hindsight it would've been cheaper to buy one of the existing things but where's the fun in that?

Edit 2: Now I need a way to mount the monitor. At least it can hold my weight at around 95 kg.
For now I'll use the 27 inch Acer Predator XB271HU but in the future it will become a 34 inch curved monitor.

I was at the mall downstairs and saw that the Samsung Buds 3 Pro was up for pre-order, couldn't help myself and pre-ordered one, a silver pair, which I should be getting late next week. From reviews, it looks to be a solid pair of IEM, with the additional 'Interpreter' function that tickled my fancy, that it has one dynamic driver + a smaller planar driver with dual amp is intriguing to me.

It also has 24bit/96kHz audio capability tick all the boxes for me....gonna spend a little time to get to 'know' it before I can say anything about it. I hope my S24U can use all its added functionalities to the fullest, not sure about the Flip5, but we'll see.....

Edit - As usual, I'll be back to post a pic or two of it when I get it...

Edit - As usual, I'll be back to post a pic or two of it when I get it...
check out the JBL Live Pro or the new live beam ones.

i liked them better than the samsung ones when i was looking for a pair of buds. Im still using the live pro 2.

It's supposed to be for slot 8 not slot 5 which I have  But it seems to work

I can have the monitor just in front of the wheel base or behind. Will most likely use the Valve Index with it, so no wider monitor necessary.

does that do both type-c and usb-a? Clever if so!
Yep, one end is C, the other is A. One of the reasons I got this one exactly.

I have a USB hub with USB-C at one end and a combination USB-A and Micro-USB-B on the other side. Good for putting various media into any phone.

Yep, I got a similar SanDisk drive some years ago. Very useful to transfer data on-the-go from/to a phone. Only issue with mine is that the sliding lock doesn't hold its position when in USB-A mode anymore.
