What's your latest tech purchase?

A used Strix RTX 3080 for $400 off…. Facebook marketplace lol.

The 7800 XT is with the Titan sub, so I wanted the 7900 xt pretty bad but I just wasn’t sure the money was worth it. I’m happy. The 3080 runs everything in 1440p minimum 120 fps at ultra settings (with a couple poorly coded exceptions) so I’m happy.

I don't see a big difference really with that and something like 2x24 or 2x48 kits in relation to 2x32 or 2x64 kits. It's just binning considerations relative to capacity. I mean it is a bit of a meh option, but no more than 2x8GB or 2x16GB is with DDR4 that was recommended for a very long period of time to people on a budget build. I get what you're saying yet I'm still surprised it's not a option.

The other options I'd say are similarly meh just scaled a little differently so a bit wider price gap. It requires fewer higher quality binned chips in total though so it kind of balances out. You still have basic PCB design costs to contend with though it's also easier on IMC in the first place with lower capacity kits. I think there are plenty of instances where it could be preferable at similar price and instances where the capacity makes more sense.
I mean, from 8 to 16 to 24 to 32 there's a difference of 8GB/stick. From 8 to 12 to 16 it'd be 4GB, so what I meant is I think it would be unnecessary overlap. But that's my opinion only.

I rarely exceed 5GB usage...

It might be worth some of your time looking up comparison videos on YT that show how memory usage scales in RAM and DRAM usage on both ends of the performance scale across generations of hardware. Could be very educational for your upcoming purchase that will make full use of modern protocols and programming.

The % of games that leverage more than 16GB on a system not running a bunch of rubbish in the backgroud is probably quite low. I kind of wonder what W1zzard's game benchmarks looks like on ram usage at 4K across all of them. I'm sure they will go up a bit over time, but even so.

When I say I rarely exceed 5GB, I actually have 16GB installed, and for my upcoming purchase I may start at 8GB and move up from there; but I would certainly want the machine to be able to handle say 64GB or more.

The problem with the M1/2 Macs is that one can't upgrade the RAM after purchase.

One last upgrade for the AM4 platform.
My previous B450 board was a bit tight in the pci-e connectivity department... so I decided to get X570. I found Asus Prime X570-P for a good price... and here it is. It seems this board has no resource sharing - all pci-e and M.2 slots and even sata ports can be used simultaneously. :D Which is perfect for my crowded PC :) There is RTX 3080, Datapath capture card, 2.5 Gbit LAN and audio card in the pci-e slots. One NVME SSD... and I still have one M.2 and one pcie x1 available.

Bought an used DDC waterpump and probably getting it today. Back to custom loop after a long break. :)

And hide your PC behind the monitors?.. Not doing that... :D
Pfft. Long cables.

Year old image, when i was setting it up.
(Different desk and sleeved cables, now)

LOL GMMK claiming it's a full size KB when it's a laptop style KB
Size is based on number of keys, not the layout. It's listed as 96% sized

I use a heat-gun, plastic tools,.. very light prying only. the process takes under one min, generally 30 seconds per side,..

I've pulled the heat shields from over three dozen kits with no issues. :)

Sexy. I like it, and when i move to DDR5 i should do something like that :D
I wonder if alphacool makes ARGB RAM waterblocks, they make everything else...

I am pretty sure alphacool just redid their website - it is pretty much only half there. It is almost as bad as EK at the moment.

All I'll say here is that Star Citizen is much happier on 32GB than it is on 16GB.

RAM is hella cheap these days so I don't see a reason to not go for 32GB (or more) unless it's a budget gaming rig.

The game seems to just allocate upwards of about 24GB system memory due to allocating upwards of 24GB VRAM based on current consumer level GPU's. You'd have to drop settings either way regardless of memory to get the game to run well on a GPU with less performance and VRAM capacity. If it were better optimized it would be less a problem. Direct storage could probably improve things a bit as well if they leveraged it.

That's a bit of a cherry picked scenario though, but sure you can find isolated cases today where you might encounter some hiccups. If they decided to let the game allocate up to 64GB VRAM because hey some data center GPU's have that much HBM you'd be in the same situation with a even steeper barrier of expectations. You'd have to play with settings because of lazy optimization centered on optimizing quickly around the most expensive consumer level GPU's VRAM capacity points.

On a budget you're not pairing it with a 20GB or 24GB VRAM realistically speaking. Plus if it's a 4 DIMM board you could just add another kit. I do agree that RAM is quite cheap right now. It only really makes sense on a tight budget with lowered expectations in the first place, but that's always been the case. I've always kind of leaned more heavily into making sure I had a ample abundance of system memory personally, but plenty of people skimp a bit if they can get away with it and save's them a bit of cash.

Found a Eufy RoboVac 11S at a thrift store for $25 minus 25%.

It came with a charger, a dead battery, and no remote.

I found a new battery and remote on Amazon for about $40. $60 all in ain't bad for a $200 MSRP robot vacuum.

I've never used a robot vacuum before, so I think it's pretty neat.

It's surprisingly quiet and absolutely excels at picking up dog hair. I've currently only tested it on tile.

I still need to figure out the best place for its charger. It needs to be out of the way, but there also needs to be enough space around it so the vacuum can get to it.

This one doesn't have app functionality, which is probably a good thing, given Eufy's track record with data privacy.

Would be comfy! Feels like that robot vacuums just came to the market but they've been a thing already since the (mid?)2000s

can't stop, won't sto.... oh well IT will stop me ... literally ....

still no new screen or computer related upgrade, although tempting ... one of my etailer has a XFX Speedster MERC 319 RX 6900 XT for 640ish chf ... but, monitor come first (max 280chf) then 5800X3D (is also ~280chf) then maybe a second 32gb kit of the same RAM i currently run ... since they are 80chf now, and i prefer to take 3 upgrades for 640chf than 1 for the same price :D

yep ... stopping power is strong with these one... Jagwire Pro LR2, rotor (lighter and higher end than the Tektro i already have ;) )
20230720_095814.jpg
(brake pads are still okay'ish ... but Jagwire or Swissstop have Tektro HD-M275 compatible pads at reasonable price )

and a lighter 15L bag (too bad the led slot is oriented for vertical clips  my rear light has a horizontal clip and even tho it's a square shape it has a fancy logo, but it can also be set to pure square ilumination)

bleh, more bike stuff ... oh well summer i blame ...

little trail and pic nic ...

Dropping the graphics settings just transfers the load to the CPU at the moment.

Don't force male and female connectors together! Each one must decide for itself.
ill just leave the cables disconnected and hope they find their path so I can use the receiver eventually.

Scored a pair of JBL 308P's in excellent condition for $220 off the local Craigslist. Much better sound than the 306P mkII's I already have. The 308P's combined with the JBL subwoofer I also already have that's designed for use with them are stunning fed by my Asus Xonar Essence STX II into a Soundcraft Signature 16 mixer. I'm using the setup in a nearfield configuration in one of my workstations along with a 43" Samsung 4K TV as a monitor.

Let's be honest: each cable has its intended purpose, regardless of preference. :D

Yes, here's something on the subject
One of the best Adult Swim bumps imo.
