Hey man, is the new Core Duo's compatible with your 478 mobo? I'm trying to figure out if they're compatible with 478 (at least 915 chipset and above) because that's just plain stupid if they're not pin compatible but still call themselves 478 and say they have "backwards compatible 667mhz (to 533mhz) fsb's"
As far as I can tell from the INTEL website, yes the Core Duo is Socket 478. The only upgrade for my rig, really, is an Extreme Edition CPU for about $1000. This mobo supports 400, 533, 664/667, and 800fsb. Can't find an ABIT IS-7 anywhere, but can find an ABIT IS-7 E2. The E-2 has half the memory slots, no optical ports (don't use them anyways), static (no fan) northbus heatingsink, and different BIOS. Both run with Intel i865-ICH5. The IS-7 E2 is in Server 478 MMC which will be added as soon as I can take some good pics of it.
Okay, but are the new 478 mobo's downgradable to old 478 processors? Like I said, I heard the 915 and up chipsets are somehow compatible with the Duo/Solo processors.
W1zzardthe new intel mobiles (core duo, solo) will not work in an old socket 478 motherboard
Does this mean that you have to have i915 NB or better to run core duo and these are M processors? Man, need to do some more research to get the scoop! Only glanced at the Intel website when AMDCam asked about them. Do know that there are a couple of Socket 478/479 PCI-x16 mobo's out there and they only support Pentium M CPU's as far as I can tell.
According to the documentation that came with my ABIT IS-7, only 533 and 800fsb CPU are supported. But when I dropped in my 1.6a (400fsb) it worked flawlessly and low and behold, 667fsb is also supported, so you never know till you try. Budget is the only reason for not trying all kinds of crazy combo's for me.
This is the web address for FAQ on the core duo/solo CPU's. You will notice that the solo works with i915 and the duo works with i945. Basicly, no these new CPU's will not work with my mobo as it has an i865 NB as W1zzard pointed out. So if you want to run a Core Duo, you will need to upgrade your mobo as it is running the i915 NB. But then again, the computer industry is always trying to get everyone to think they need to upgrade. That is how they stay in business!
As we all know, or should know, about every six months your newest hardware becomes outdated. As long as you can run the software it doesn't really matter. When I was a teenager, my mom said that one day it wouldn't really matter how fast your computer was. This has been true for a while now. At this point as long as you have a 2Ghz CPU, 256Mb mem, and 64Mb video you can run just about anything pretty smoothly. Faster is better for click happy people, but not really nessasary. It all comes down to how much fundage you have and if you really care that the Jones' have a faster, more expensive computer than you.
Would repaint case, but would loose the Vice City sticker. Maybe should look into some air brushing for the Rockstar/GTA Theme. That is what this rig was designed around. Pretty silly to build a rig just for one series of games that seems to attract a lot of strange attention. Oh, wait that was the idea in the first place when GTA III came out!
The desk is one of those cheap Walmart desks from about eight years ago. Rebuilt it about three times. Really it wasn't designed to hold the weight of a CRT monitor. It's made out of press wood. Plan on getting a new desk for Server 478 some day, that one will go here. Works for me.
