Toshiba Announces DT02 7200 RPM 2 TB Hard Disk Drive

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation announces the DT02 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD, designed for desktop, PC computing, gaming and storage applications where performance and reliability are critical. The new DT02 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD delivers higher performance than Toshiba's predecessor and leverages Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) Technology. The DT02 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD has a SATA 6 Gbit/s interface and a 2 TB capacity.

The DT02 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD has a 19% increase in data transfer speed compared to Toshiba's current "DT02 series," achieving a maximum of 210 MiB/s, equipped with a 256 MB buffer, making it suitable for desktop, PC computing, gaming and storage applications. The DT02 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD is available from this month.

Seagate Announces Seagate Mach.2 Exos 2X14 HDD With Up to 524 MB/s Sequential Speeds

Seagate has announced what currently amounts to the fasted HDD storage available in the market. The Seagate Mach.2 Exos 2X14 is available in a 14 TB capacity. What Seagate has, smartly, done, is integrate a dual 7 TB HDD system within a helium-filled 3.5" chassis. The drive features a standard 7200 RPM spindle speed, offers 256 MB cache, and uses a single-port SAS 12 Gb/s interface.The Exos 2X14 should be recognized by systems as two independently addressable logical drives.

Seagate's Exos 2X14 boasts a 524 MB/s sustained transfer rate (outer diameter) of 304/384 random read/write IOPS, and a 4.16 ms average latency - but of course, being an HDD solution with spinning platters and actuators, random performance still suffers tremendously against even its SATA SSD counterparts. Power consumption has understandable gone up for this solution - an Exos 2X14 drive consumes 7.2 W in idle mode and up to 13.5 W under heavy load. Seagate is offering its PowerBalance features integrated into the Exos 2X14, which aims to reduce its power consumption within the 12 W power envelope usually associated with 3.5" HDDs, but Seagate says this "does come with a performance reduction of 50% for sequential reads and 5%-10% for random reads." The need for higher IOPS-per-TB performance in their HDD space so as to allow datacenters to offer adequate performance for high-capacity storage continues to bear fruits.

Seagate Delivers Enterprise-Ready Exos 18 TB Hard Drive Designed for Hyperscale Applications

Western Digital Now Ships up to 14 TB UltraStar HS14 HDDs

Toshiba Announces Availability of the 8 TB, 7200 RPM TX 300 HDD for $260

Toshiba has announced immediate availability of their new 8 TB solution for you storage-mongers out there. The TX 300 brings an 8 TB, 7200 RPM HDD to an interesting $260 price-point. Yes, we know everyone would love to have that amount of storage even in a good, old SATA III SSD for about the same price - but now is not the time to daydream. For the foreseeable future, the best option for cheap storage in such quantities lies with our old and (somewhat) trusty platter-based storage tech.

Storage options are available at 4 TB, 5 TB, 6 TB and 8 TB with 128 MB cache. These drives feature perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), which allows for higher areal density than traditional (now seldom used) longitudinal recording. Additional security and reliability features have been baked in on these particular models - the motors are attached to both the top and bottom of the unit and there is an increased attention to shock and vibration dampening. These drives are available now, and the 8 TB option will set you back the aforementioned $260.
