ASRock Implements CAM (Clever Access Memory) on Intel Z490 Taichi Motherboard

ASRock has released a BIOS update for their Z490 Taichi motherboard which implements a Clever Access Memory (CAM) system (might I say that's as clever as it sounds?) CAM is basically ASRock's own marketing push based on AMD's SAM, which is in itself a marketing push based on PCIe's Resizable BAR feature (the amount of marketing names employed to describe the same set of features is becoming mind-boggling). The feature is available through the 1.72 BETA Bios for the Z490 Taichi motherboard, and WCCFTech ran some quick and dirty tests on a Z490-based system with an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card to verify what (if any) performance differences arose.

The tests were done at 4K resolution for Shadows of the Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, running on an Intel Core i7-10700K processor and 2x 8 GB sticks of DDR4-2666 memory. The results? 3.32% performance improvement under Shadows of the Tomb Raider, and an impressive 11.54% improvement for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla (images to the left feature CAM on, and images on the right show CAM off). It seems it's only a matter of time until this amazing feature that's been available (yet untapped) for years now brings some very considerable and widespread performance improvements to users independent of platform. Kinda like finding a $10 bill in an old pair of jeans.

NZXT Launches CAM 4.0 Software

NZXT has today launched a new update to its CAM software made for PC monitoring. The latest 4.0 version bring many features to CAM with better application performance and UI design. The software has been redesigned from the ground up with a goal of improving overall user experience, with better features like nicer overall UI to prioritize showing only the most important aspects of your PC's health. There are new sections like bandwidth and resource per-process tabs that let users see where is their PC spending its resources.

The application has also seen major "under the hood" redesign as well. It is now optimized for better performance and uses less system resources. This is also important when using CAM's built-in overlay during gaming sessions as it will leave more CPU time available for the game instead of using it up. The overlay also got some enhancements like customization of what is displayed during its use for less intrusive experience. Additionally, all peripherals that were compatible with previous versions of CAM software will continue to be supported during this 4.0 release, giving users more options to control their fans, coolers and RGB lighting setups. In addition to a bright UI, there is also a choice of dark mode to blend in with your Windows theme. NZXT CAM 4.0 software is available for free download here.

The customer can set a base price they are willing to pay, then select which game they're looking to trounce with their new high-performance, custom-built PC, and the software does the rest of the work, picking through hundreds of possible hardware combinations to choose what is - in theory - the best build for those performance and pricing targets. According to NZXT's founder and CEO Johnny Hou, the company has "Reached that tipping point where we have enough data to confidently say 'these top 10, 20 games, we can predict, and we're going to guarantee'". Furthermore, if the games don't run according to expectations and the guaranteed performance metrics, Hou says that NZXT will let you return the computer.
