Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti GHz Edition Detailed

Gigabyte, which gave the GeForce GTX 780 the "GHz Edition" treatment, in which the GPU core is factory-overclocked above the 1 GHz mark, meted out the same with the more powerful GTX 780 Ti. Positioned above the GTX 780 Ti OC Edition which debuted early last month, the GHz Edition features a swanky new custom-design PCB by Gigabyte, which features a strong VRM; coupled with the same WindForce 450W cooling solution that's featured on the GTX 780 GHz Edition. The GTX 780 Ti OC Edition, on the other hand, is a combination of the WindForce 450W cooler and NVIDIA reference PCB, with a factory-overclock.

The PCB of Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti GHz Edition is a bustling metropolis, with a 10+2 phase VRM that draws power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The cooler, on the other hand, is a complex aluminium fin-stack heatsink to which heat is fed by five 8 mm-thick copper heat pipes, and which are ventilated by a trio of 100 mm fans. The large heatsink is supported by a base plate that draws heat from the memory and VRM; a support brace that runs along the top of the card, and a back-plate. Gigabyte tuned the card with clock speeds of 1085 MHz core (base), 1150 MHz core (GPU Boost), and a surprisingly untouched 7.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. Based on the 28 nm GK110 silicon, the GTX 780 Ti features 2,880 CUDA cores, 240 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 3 GB of memory. There's no word on when Gigabyte will formally launch this card. It shouldn't be too far away.

NCKU Develops World's First Switchless Cluster Supercomputer

The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Supercomputing Research Center (RSC) has built the world's first switchless cluster computer. Known as the "CK-Star", this computer connects eight computers without switch control, thus breaking Intel's performance record. Together with the computer systems provided by Acer, the CK-Star is jointly built by NCKU RSC Director Dr. Chi-Chuan Hwang and Dr. Yuefan Deng of Mainland China's National Supercomputing Center in Jinan (NSCCJN), who is also a Distinguished Professor at the State University of New York (SUNY).

NCKU RSC Director Dr. Chi-Chuan Hwang added that CK-Star is the most unique switchless cluster supercomputer compared to traditional cluster supercomputer which requires switch control to control interaction between nodes. He explained that the weakness of the traditional one is that switches will become performance bottlenecks when the number of nodes is large. Besides, switches also consume large amount of power, estimated to be 50% of the total power consumption. With the introduction of the CK-Star which allows the unrestricted expansion of supercomputers, these problems can be overcome.

Gigabyte Upgrades the M7580 Wireless Mouse

Gigabyte Technology is currently preparing to release an updated version of the M7580 wireless mouse. Dubbed simply M7580 V2, the new arrival swaps the 1000 DPI-capable optical sensor of its predecessor for one that will allow a sensitivity of up to 1600 DPI. Other than the sensor, things remain pretty much the same as the first version - an ambidextrous design, 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity, two buttons and a scroll wheel, a low-power indicator, a battery life of up to five months (two AAA batteries are used), and a bundled nano received (USB).

The M7580 V2 will come with a two-year warranty. No word on pricing but it should be similar to that of the initial version, around 10 Euro.

Gigabyte to Perform Exceptionally Well with Motherboard Shipments in 2013

World's number-two PC motherboard vendor, Gigabyte, is expected to perform exceptionally well in 2013, in terms of motherboard shipments. The company closed 2012 with about 19 million units shipped, trailing its slightly bigger rival ASUS, which had ended the year on 22 million. According to shipment numbers at hand, Gigabyte already shipped 17.5 million units between January and October 2013, and at this rate, is projected to have shipped about 21 million by the year's end; which would become the highest ever volumes shipped, in the company's 28-year history.

In comparison, ASUS clocked 15.5 million units in the first three quarters, and is expected to ship about 5 million units in Q4. There's a real chance of Gigabyte shipping more motherboards this year than ASUS, not by a big margin, though. Gigabyte's motherboard plants traditionally also contract-manufactured motherboards for other brands, and it's being reported that the company has almost no such contracts, letting it focus manufacturing almost entirely on its own channel brand. Gigabyte ships PC, workstation, and server motherboards in almost all standard form-factors, and based on almost all x86 platforms, from Intel and AMD.

Gigabyte Rolls Out its Radeon R9 270 WindForce OC Graphics Card

Gigabyte hopped onto the Radeon R9 270 bandwagon with a card based on its slim WindForce 2X cooling solution, the GV-R9270OC-2GD. This factory-overclocked card uses the company's triangle-cool heatsink that's ventilated by a pair of 100 mm spinners, strapped onto a black Ultra Durable VGA+ PCB. The card offers factory-overclocked speeds of 950 MHz core, 975 MHz boost, and 5.60 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. Based on the 28 nm "Curacao" silicon, the R9 270 features 1,280 stream processors, 80 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface.
