Gigabyte Z97X-SLI Offers Supreme Bang-for-buck

Gigabyte may have struck a superb price-features sweet-spot with the Z97X-SLI, which the company unveiled at its Computex wall. This board, we're hearing, will be priced around $125, and has a feature-set to rival boards much pricier. To begin with, the socket LGA1150 board is based on Intel's Z97 Express chipset. The board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, and conditions it using a simple 4-phase VRM, that uses 60A chokes. The VRM area is clad with heatsinks all around. The CPU socket is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots, supporting up to 32 GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory, and two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, which run at x8/x8, when both are populated. This is also among the few motherboards in its price bracket to support NVIDIA SLI, apart from AMD CrossFire.

Apart from the two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots, three PCI-Express 2.0 x1, and a couple of legacy PCI slots make up the expansion area. Its storage area is where the package gains tons of value. You get six SATA 6 Gb/s ports, from which two can convert into a SATA-Express 10 Gb/s port; and an M.2 slot. The board features high-grade audio, including a Realtek ALC1150 HD audio CODEC, which offers SNR as high as 115 dBA; with ground-layer isolation, and a headphones amp. Networking is care of an Intel-made GbE controller. Display outputs include dual-link DVI, D-Sub, and HDMI. Legacy connectivity includes LPT and COM (by headers), and PS/2. AMI Aptio UEFI BIOS, backed by dual-UEFI redundancy, is at this board's helm. For around $125, you can't get this board's feature-set wrong.

Gigabyte Shows off its First Mini-ITX Gaming Series Motherboard

Gigabyte's G1.Gamer line of motherboards are notorious for overlooking the mini-ITX form-factor. The company made up for that by unveiling the Z97N-Gaming 5, a feature-packed socket LGA1150 mini-ITX motherboard based on the Intel Z97 Express motherboard, ready for Intel's Core "Devil's Canyon" enthusiast processors. The board draws power from 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS power connectors, and uses a 6-phase CPU VRM. Expansion slots include one PCI-Express 3.0 x16, and an mPCIe 2.0 x1. It lacks SATA-Express and M.2 due to its limited PCB real-estate, but still offers five SATA 6 Gb/s ports. Display outputs include dual-link DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort. Realtek ALC1150 HD audio (115 dBA SNR), and Broadcom Killer E2200 gigabit Ethernet are star attractions. Also featured is a WLAN board supporting 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.0.

Gigabyte Shows off H97N-WiFi based BRIX Desktop

Gigabyte showed off a reference BRIX space-saving desktop based around its H97N-WiFi mini-ITX motherboard. The desktop packs a mean punch for everything except 3D gaming, and should be capable of complex video-editing and production jobs. At its heart is a Core i7-4785T energy-efficient quad-core processor based on the "Haswell" Refresh silicon. The CPU features clock speeds of 2.20 GHz with 3.20 GHz Turbo Boost, HyperThreading, AVX2 instruction set, and a dual-channel IMC. Other chops include up to 16 GB of dual-channel DDR3-1600 Crucial Ballistix Tracer memory, up to 1 TB of Crucial M550 SSD storage, display outputs that include dual-link DVI and HDMI, 802.11 ac + Bluetooth 4.0 WLAN, gigabit Ethernet, and a 120W power-brick.

Gigabyte Shows off its APEX Gaming Desktop

Riding on the success of its NUC-competitive BRIX line of compact desktops, Gigabyte is beginning to take renowned interest in pre-built boutique desktops. Its latest creation, the APEX, is the company's flagship gaming desktop barebone chassis, designed in a never before seen form-factor that competes with next-generation gaming consoles in size, but offers several times more raw CPU and GPU computing power. The APEX is roughly as tall as a micro-ATX tower, but half as slim. It can embed mini-ITX (or even micro-ATX) motherboards, supporting high-end CPUs, perhaps even Core i7 "Devil's Canyon." The chassis uses risers to hold long (we're talking R9 290 series long) graphics cards, so you can choose between high-end cards such as the R9 290X and the GTX TITAN Black. It will take advantage of space-saving fast storage solutions, such as M.2 and mSATA.

Gigabyte Unveils SuperOverclock VRM Boards for Graphics Cards

Gigabyte showed us its new range of auxiliary VRM boards for graphics cards, designed for professional overclockers. The board has to be manually soldered onto your graphics card, it supplements your card's GPU power domains. The card features a high-current power stage, which draws power from five 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The power stage is actively cooled by a fan-heatsink. While your GPU may never need that much power, it makes near darn sure that it doesn't suffer from voltage droop, which destabilizes your record-seeking OC. Such devices have been attempted by other VGA makers in the past, famously, the EPower Board by EVGA. The company also showed off its first liquid-nitrogen evaporators for GPUs.

Intel "Devil's Canyon" 9-series Chipset Exclusive?

Intel's next socket LGA1150 quad-core processors for overclockers, namely the Core i7-4790K and the Core i7-4690K, codenamed "Devil's Canyon," could be exclusive to motherboards based on the 9-series chipset. For overclockers, the choices would hence narrow down to motherboards based on the Z97 Express chipset. Marketing material distributed to retailers ahead of the processors' mid-June launch, mention "Devil's Canyon" to be supported by "new Intel 9 series chipset," while the same material detailing unlocked Pentium 20th Anniversary Edition mention it to be supported by "both Intel 8 and 9 series chipset."

Intel not mentioning that for "Devil's Canyon" is leading some to speculate that it won't be supported by motherboards running 8-series chipset, notably Z87 Express. For overclockers with expensive Z87 motherboards such as the ASUS Maximus VI Extreme, Gigabyte Z87X SOC, and MSI Z87 MPower MAX, this could spell trouble. Based on binned "Haswell Refresh" silicon, "Devil's Canyon" chips are special, in that they feature enhanced on-package electricals that can tolerate higher current; an enhanced thermal interface material between the die and the integrated heatspreader (IHS), enhanced LGA contact points, and increased voltage and thermal limits.
