IEEE Announces Public Access to Select IEEE C95 Standards: Magnetic Field Exposure

IEEE, the world's largest professional association advancing technology for humanity, today announced that the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has made some of its IEEE C95 safety standards for human exposure to electromagnetic fields available to the public at no cost. The standards can be downloaded through the IEEE Get Program, which allows anyone from around the world to view and download current individual standards at no charge. Complimentary public access to select IEEE C95 standards is made possible by funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, which sponsors their publication on the IEEE Get Program web site.

The family of IEEE C95 standards establishes limits for human exposure to electromagnetic fields; standardizes methods that manufacturers and engineers can use to measure and compute radiofrequency (RF) and other electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields to which people may be exposed; and details a safety program that organizations can use to ensure RF safety in the workplace and other facilities.

Broadcom Launches First Chips for Gigabit Speed 802.11ac, Foundation of 5G WiFi

Broadcom Corporation, a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today introduced its first family of 802.11ac (5G WiFi) chips designed for a broad range of product segments. The new IEEE 802.11ac chips are three times faster and up to six times more power efficient than equivalent 802.11n solutions. Visit Experience Broadcom @ CES for more news, blogs and multi-media from CES and www.5GWiFi.org for more information on consumer advantages of 802.11ac.

5G WiFi is the next generation Wi-Fi standard required for today's mobile and video era. Based on 802.11ac, 5G WiFi is a major evolutionary step from the existing 802.11a/b/g/n networks. Broadcom's 5G WiFi dramatically improves the wireless range in the home, allowing consumers to watch HD-quality video from more devices, in more places, simultaneously. The increased speed enables consumers to download web content from a mobile device faster and quickly synch large files, such as videos, in a fraction of the time it would take on a similar 802.11n device. Since 5G WiFi transfers the same volume of data at a much faster rate, devices enter low-power mode faster, which results in significant power consumption advantages.

The Teeny-Tiny DIY PC That Fits In The Palm Of Your Hand

Do you want a really small PC that fits in the palm of your hand? Well, if you do, then VIA Technology have got you covered with their new ARTiGO A1150. As you can see from the pictures, it has a high 'cuteness' factor, due to its diminutive size of just 5.7" x 3.9" x 2". For processing, it sports a 64-bit VIA 1.0 GHz dual core Eden X2 CPU and a VX900H media system processor supporting the latest HD video codecs including H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2/4 at up to 1080p. Interfaces include HDMI and VGA ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, five USB ports including one USB device port, three audio jacks with optional wireless IEEE 802.11 b/g/n and SD card reader modules.

Target uses include the usual home/office environments, use as a super space-saving desktop PC, a home server, media streaming and surveillance applications. Of course, the real question is what kind of performance can one expect out if it, given that it's targeted at the desktop PC market, so one hopes that it can run Windows 7 at a decent performance level. Oddly, the VIA press release doesn't say anything about the RAM, so it's not clear how much can be fitted, which type and what speed grades are supported.

In Win Releases Ironclad Full ATX Case

In Win released its newest case, the Ironclad. The case makes extensive use of an industrial design with parts of its exterior making use of perforated metal, appealing more to the LAN-party animals and case-modders. It is a fairly large full-ATX tower measuring 550x225x566mm (21.7"x8.9"x22.3") HxWxD, which is made mostly of SECC steel. It has 5 external 5.25" bays and a drive cage with six 3.5" drive bays. Also included is a 2.5" bay for SSDs. The motherboard tray features cable-management holes, along with a big hole at the CPU socket area for managing CPU coolers with backplates. There are 8 expansion slots, with the 8th one making installing double-slot graphics cards on the last expansion slot easy. Each slot cover has a vent with dust-filters. Dust filters also make it to other areas such as the PSU air intake and the front grill.

The case has vents on almost every side. Fans include one 120 mm front, a rear 120 mm, a top 120 mm fan (while the top has slot for two 120 mm fans), a large 220 mm fan on the side-panel, which also has holders for four 120 mm fans instead of the 220 mm fan. Some panels also come with noise-dampening foam padding. Right below the expansion slots and above the PSU, there are four holes for water-cooling tubings, for two independent loops. The front-panel is located on the top, and has FP audio, two USB ports, two eSATA, and an IEEE-1394a. Although released, In Win didn't announce a price for the Ironclad.

NEC Develops LSI for High Speed Next Generation Communication Interfaces

NEC Corporation (NEC) and NEC Electronics Corporation (NECEL) announced today the development and successful demonstration of LSI technology for next-generation high-speed serial communication interfaces. This new technology allows inter-chip communication that is three times faster than modern communication interface standards, such as USB 3.0 and PCI Express 2.0, without using complicated transmission modes like multilevel transmission.

In recent years, due to the appearance of high-definition (HD) TV and 3D video content, the volume of data being processed for personal use has rapidly grown. This growth has resulted in greater demand for high speed transmission of data both between and within a wide variety of equipment. In order to provide for this demand, various types of sophisticated transmission schemes have been proposed to compensate for the large waveform distortion of input signals fed to the receiver, and to reach high-speed communications of more than 10 Gb/s to facilitate next-generation USB and PCI Express.
