The TechPowerUp team spent a short time perusing Lexar's CES 2025 booth earlier this week. Today's return trip has resulted in a closer look at the flash memory specialist's ARMOR GOLD and SILVER SDXC UHS-II cards. Write speeds differ between these models—160 MB/s (SILVER) versus 205 MB/s (GOLD). Our guy on the ground has expressed frustration regarding the fragility of bog-standard plastic casing on the vast majority of memory cards. Lexar representatives expressed plenty of confidence in the ARMOR's durability, thanks to stainless-steel construction. This change in protective material has the company claiming that ARMOR is 37 times stronger than normal plastic exteriors.

TPU was encouraged to try and bend or break a demo sample's metal shell. Many attempts at destruction have failed—perhaps fitting for products designed to survive and remain fully functional when handled constantly or utilized in the field. Both GOLD and SILVER models are IP68 rated—resistant to water, dust and fumbled drops. On closer inspection, it looks as if Lexar's design department has chosen to omit the traditional locking switch. User feedback has often focused on this common area of failure, so it is encouraging to see that the ARMOR package is not compromised by a flimsy moving piece. We stopped by at the 2025 International CES booth of Lexar, a brand known for high-quality memory and storage products for creative professionals and gamers alike. Our tour begins with the new Lexar NM1090 PRO, the company's flagship M.2 NVMe Gen 5 SSD, which is capable sequential speeds of up to 14 GB/s reads, with up to 13 GB/s writes. The drive comes in capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB. Next up, we spotted the Lexar ARES DDR5 CUDIMM. This particular model offers speeds of DDR5-9600 and a density of 16 GB, to make 32 GB kits. From what we hear, this should easily overclock beyond the 10,000 MT/s mark on "Arrow Lake-S" with Gear 4.

We also spotted Lexar's popular flash storage products, including CFexpress type-A and type-B memory cards under the Lexar Diamond Professional brand. The CFexpress type-A card offers sequential speeds of up to 3.7 GB/s reads, up to 3.4 GB/s writes, and a 400 MB/s write speed guarantee. The CFexpress type-B card offers up to 1.8 GB/s sequential reads, up to 1.4 GB/s sequential writes, and a 400 MB/s guaranteed write speed. Next up, is the Lexar Armor SD card meant for high-endurance applications, such as FPV drones, action cameras, and surveillance, with 280 MB/s max reads, 210 MB/s max writes, and 60 MB/s guaranteed write speeds. Lastly, the company showcased its Workflow Go line of portable 2-way backup solutions, which let you dock in your high-speed storage devices for rapid backup.

Lexar late last week introduced the ARES DDR5-6000 CL26 memory kit. The kit is optimized for AMD Ryzen platforms, such as the recently launched Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It comes with an AMD EXPO profile for DDR5-6000 and tight timings, including a CAS latency of 26, or 55 ns. It also includes an Intel XMP 3.0 profile that enables the same timings. Typical DDR5-6000 kits tend to come with a CL of 30. Under the hood, the kit uses SK Hynix A-die DRAM chips, and a 10-layer PCB. The module features thermal pads for not just the DRAM chips, but also the PMIC. These transfer heat to a 1.8 mm-thick aluminium heatspreader that's crowned by a silicone diffuser for the module's lighting setup that consists of eight ARGB LEDs, with 13 lighting presets. The module comes in two color options—silver and black. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability information.

TrendForce has issued its latest findings, indicating that the global SSD market has rectified its supply and demand dynamics in 2022, following a resolution in the shortage of master control ICs that had hampered the market in 2021. Despite the normalization of supply, global SSD shipments witnessed a decline, with only 114 million units shipped in 2022—a 10.7% decrease from the prior year.

The top three SSD shipment leaders of 2022 were Kingston, ADATA, and Lexar, with Kingston and ADATA maintaining solid advantages and experiencing growth in market share over 2021. Lexar's growth was attributed to an aggressive push for revenue in anticipation of going public. Kimtigo, in 2022, made significant strides in expanding into industrial control and OEM markets, which in turn boosted its shipment volume and market share. Netac maintained its competitive edge in the SSD market alongside securing several government orders in the enterprise SSD sector, keeping its market share and ranking consistent with the previous year.
