Intel Atom N270 Overclocked to 2385MHz, Probably the Fastest Atom Ever

Have you ever thought of overclocking your shiny little netbook, probably not, but here's what might happen if you're wondering. In my humble opinion this is ridiculous, but it's possible. Overclocking experts from Team Australia, using an ordinary MSI Wind U100 netbook and a single Kingston 2GB DDR2 667Mhz SO-DIMM, have done the unthinkable, overclock the hell out of an Intel Atom N270 netbook processor. If you remember, MSI recently released a v1.09 BIOS for the Wind that allows overclocking. That's exactly what Team AU have done, dismantle an MSI Wind netbook, put some LN2 cooling and use the latest BIOS to max the Intel Atom CPU frequency. The end result is pretty good, they've managed to push the poor 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU to an amazing 2385MHz (FSB 199 x 12 multiplier) and take a CPU-Z snapshot. There's really no point in doing that, but it's pure fun. The full discussion thread for this insane experiment is posted over at XtremeSystems.

MSI Wind BIOS 1.09 Enables Overclocking for Real

MSI recently released a new BIOS version 1.09 for their first netbook MSI Wind. Thanks to this new BIOS Wind owners may now overclock their netbooks by pressing Fn+F10 on the keyboard with an AC power plugged in. This enables 8%, 15% and 24% (1984MHz compared to 1600MHz stock) automatic overclocking. Enabling a 24% overclock will roughly give you a 30% increase in performance. The new BIOS also enhances Wind's performance by approximately 5% over the older BIOS version 1.08. The only downside of this BIOS is that it changes the fan speed, so your Wind may appear to be louder even when it is not overclocked. You can download the new BIOS directly from MSI here, but if you intend to upgrade I strongly recommend you to read this guide first.

MSI Wind U120 Spotted

Fudzilla have managed to get hands on some pictures of MSI's upcoming Wind U120 netbook, the succesor of today's Wind U100. If the supplied information is right the new Wind, also named Wind 2, will be supplied with either a 120GB hard drive or 20/40GB SSD which will come at a later date. Other specs suggest a 802.11n Wi-Fi, built-in webcam and a 3.5G modem that will accept a SIM card, the same Intel platform and Intel Atom CPU. In other words, the U120 will still be similar to the U100, both in specs and design. See for yourself below. The MSI Wind U120 should be available in December for less than $600.

ASUS Inflates the Eee PC Series Even More

They just keep coming in, keep coming in bunches. I'm refering to the Eee PC series by ASUS which has unofficial product releases almost on a daily basis now. As the competition for ultra-portable notebooks hots up with prominent players such as Dell, HP and the more recent MSI with the Wind series, ASUS have scheduled several variants of the Eee PC concept for launch. Feeling the heat of the 10" MSI Wind series, ASUS have announced the Eee PC 1000 and Eee PC 1000H complete with Intel's Atom processor, nearly full-size keyboard, and the option to select a HDD for the first time on the Eee series.

Apart from these, four new models, the 903, 904, 904 HD, and 905 are in line. Coming to the Eee PC 904 and 905, although not much is known about the differences between the 904 and 905, both use the larger 10" Eee PC 1000's frame with the smaller 8.9" screen from the Eee PC 900/900. So users can now have the 8.9" screen and a larger keyboard; but they now have to deal with the increased screen bezel. With the 904 HD, the 'HD' doesn't refer to a high-definition display as most of us would assume, but that you get a conventional hard-disk drive instead of a solid-state drive. We've already covered the Eee Monitor in a recent news item here.
