MSI GTX 780 Ti Lightning Pictured, Overclocked, and Tested

Ahead of its launch, French tech publication Le Comptoir du Hardware scored an early sample, and wasted no time in taking high-res pictures of the card, its innards, and putting it through a battery of benchmarks. Their first opinion? That EVGA's GTX 780 Ti Classified K|ngp|n has met its match. Taller than most graphics cards, and thicker than two slots, MSI GTX 780 Ti Lightning is based on the same new-generation TriFrozr cooling solution as the GTX 780 Lightning. Its underlying PCB is unchanged, too. The card draws power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors, and conditions it using a gargantuan 20-phase VRM. The VRM uses two separate controllers for GPU and memory+PLL. The GPU and memory both draw power from the power connectors, while only the PLL draws power from the slot. This way, memory OC isn't held back by the PCIe slot power supply.

The PCB also features consolidated voltage measurement points, independent fan headers for each of the cooler's three fans (letting you control individual fan-speeds), and dual-BIOS. The cooling solution is features multiple aluminium fin stacks that draw heat from a large nickel-plated copper base, using seven 8 mm-thick heat pipes; which are ventilated by a trio of fans. MSI claims that the cooler is capable of handling thermal loads of up to 550W. The "Lightning" logo on the cooler's top lights up to the thermal load the cooler is handling. It's white up to 150W, gets brighter between 150W and 210W, and goes red beyond 210W.

MSI Rolls Out Z87 MPower MAX AC with 802.11 ac WLAN

MSI rolled out a variant of its Z87 MPower MAX flagship socket LGA1150 motherboard, the Z87 MPower MAX AC. As its name might suggest, it includes an 802.11 ac wireless LAN interface. The board integrates a daughterboard with an Intel-made communications processor, which gives it 802.11 ac dual-band Wi-Fi at speeds of up to 867 Mbps at 5 GHz; and Bluetooth 4.0. MSI includes a pair of antennae with the board.

Built in the standard ATX form-factor, the Z87 MPower MAX AC features a 20-phase VRM to power the CPU, which is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots, and three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots (x16/NC/NC or x8/x8/NC or x8/x4/x4, depending on how they're populated). Four PCI-Express 2.0 x1 slots, and an mPCIe slot, wired to the Z87 Express PCH, find some in the middle. Storage connectivity includes eight SATA 6 Gb/s ports (six from the PCH, two from a third-party controller). Apart from the WLAN, the board features a gigabit Ethernet interface driven by Killer E2205 controller. Display outputs include two HDMI, and a DisplayPort. Ten USB 3.0 ports, 8-channel HD audio with headphone amplifier, make for the rest of it. It features a boatload of overclocking features. MSI didn't reveal pricing details.

MSI Radeon R9 290 Series Gaming PCB Pictured

Here's the first picture of the PCB under the hood of MSI's Radeon R9 290X Gaming OC graphics card, which was unveiled in Japan, over the weekend, and which was detailed in a slightly older article. It turns out that MSI will use the same board design (including the back-plate) on both the R9 290X Gaming OC and the R9 290 Gaming OC, both of which have been put up for pre-order by Canadian e-tailer NCIX. The R9 290X Gaming OC is priced at $699 CAD including taxes (US $660); while the R9 290 Gaming OC is priced at $529.99 CAD including taxes (US $500).

The PCB itself is a slight variation of MSI on AMD's reference design. The layout is identical, but there are subtle differences in component choices MSI made. For example, it ditches Coiltronics-made chokes for MagicTech. Appears to use SK Hynix made memory chips (instead of Elpida on a vast majority of retail R9 290 series boards), etc. It also appears to retain dual-BIOS. According to NCIX, both cards will feature untouched memory clock speeds of 5.00 GHz, yielding memory bandwidth of 320 GB/s, but feature 5-7 percent overclocks on the GPU. The R9 290 Gaming OC features GPU clock speeds (possibly PowerTune boost) of up to 1000 MHz (vs. 948 MHz reference), while the R9 290X Gaming OC features 1040 MHz.

MSI Radeon R9 290X Gaming OC Pictured

At a press event held in Japan, MSI showed off its second non-reference design Radeon R9 290X graphics card besides the R9 290X Lightning, the R9 290X TwinFrozr 4S Gaming OC. The card features MSI's top-grade TwinFrozr IV cooling solution with the red+black color scheme; and a non-reference design PCB by MSI. Its PCB will feature a strong VRM, a voltage controller that's fully accessible using Afterburner, factory-overclocked speeds, and a back-plate decking up the rear portion of the card, even though there's nothing on the rear side of the PCB that requires active cooling. Since the card features a BIOS-toggle switch, you can expect one of the two BIOS ROMs to feature a failsafe BIOS with reference clock speeds. MSI is expected to launch the card a little later this month. The R9 290X Lightning, however, can't be expected before 2014. One could expect a similar-looking card (perhaps minus the back-plate) based on the R9 290 (non-X).
