GeForce GTX 560 Ti Reference Board Pictured

Here are the first pictures of an NVIDIA reference design GeForce GTX 560 Ti graphics card. The pictures reveal quite a bit about the PCB layout and the cooling assembly. To begin with, the card is longer than the GTX 460, and uses a more refined cooler. The GF114 GPU uses a rectangular package, much like the GF104. The eight GDDR5 memory chips lie adjacent to the GPU. Power supply consists of 4-phase GPU, single-phase memory, and is drawn in by two 6-pin PCI-E power connectors. SLI is restricted to 2-way, and display outputs include two DVI and one mini-HDMI. Although the PCB is green, one can expect it to come in various colors depending on the partners' specifications.

The cooling assembly, as mentioned earlier, is much more refined compared to the previous generation. The GTX 460 cooler was not much more than a GPU heatsink with radially-projecting aluminum fins, covered by shroud. With the GTX 560 Ti, NVIDIA used a base-plate unisink, which collects heat from other components such as the memory and VRM, and conveys it to the GPU heatsink, which is much more elaborate, and uses 8 mm thick copper heatpipes to spread heat across a much larger heatsink. The design of this heatsink seems to be inspired from MSI's Cyclone cooler. Don't mind the flowery-green "sticker" that's Photoshop'd to the shroud, it's not part of the reference design. That's where partners can either demonstrate their creativity, or show off their anime fantasies.

MSI GeForce GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II Pictured, Listed

One of MSI's first graphics cards based on NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GTX 560 Ti GPU got listed on a European store. The N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II OC from MSI features the company's iconic Twin Frozr II GPU cooler, paired with the GTX 560 Ti GPU, overclocked out of the box at 880 MHz core and 1050 MHz (4.20 GHz GDDR5 effective) memory, against reference speeds of 820 MHz core and 1000 MHz (4.00 GHz) reference.

The Twin Frozr II, used on several MSI graphics card models till date, uses a dense aluminum fin array to which heat is conveyed by 8 mm thick heatpipes, ventilated by two 80 mm fans. MSI claims this cooler to keep the GPU up to 20°C cooler compared to NVIDIA reference cooler. It is currently listed at €280.33, but one can take this pricing with a pinch of salt, as pre-release prices tend to be a little higher.

Prepare for Motherboard Price-Hike

With the entire PC motherboard industry concentrated in Taiwan and China, it is valid to say that PC prices are pretty-much pegged to Taiwan's economy. Following a wave of labor-reforms in China and Taiwan coupled with deficit of skilled labor, and inflation added to the mix; key motherboard manufacturers are finding it difficult to cope with competitive motherboard pricing. A much smaller contributor to this is Intel's decision to phase out cheap G31 chipsets, making manufacturers buy slightly costlier G41 ones for the most common motherboard models.

Industry sources told Digitimes that the big three in the motherboard industry - ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI, will be hiking prices of their motherboards shortly, to cope with increasing raw-material, labor, and component costs. The price-hike is likely to increase prices by 10% on average in the next three months. Some higher-end models could increase by as much as 20%, if labor costs in China continue to rise. Another factor here is bulk manufacturers of printed circuit boards (PCBs), who have hiked their prices following increase in price of high-grade copper by a whopping 50% (from US $6000 /ton to $9000 /ton).

MSI to Integrate Killer NIC with Motherboards?

MSI announced a partnership with Bigfoot Networks, the company behind the Killer NIC series of accelerated network interface cards (NICs). The immediate results of this would be the motherboard major bundling Killer NICs with some of its high-end motherboards. MSI also hinted that it could work to integrate the Killer NIC logic onto motherboards. Knowing how MSI was the first to be out with a LucidLogix Hydra Engine motherboard, the idea of integration of Killer NIC onto one of its future motherboards doesn't seem far-fetched.

"We are pleased to be working with MSI," said Michael Howse, CEO of Bigfoot Networks. "The Killer 2100 gaming network card is a perfect complement to the MSI Big Bang family of mainboard solutions that will give gamers a competitive edge in online play." Andy Tung, VP of MSI USA says "MSI mainboards with Military Class components provide a great backbone for any gaming system and the Killer 2100 network card is a way to improve performance and get one step ahead of the competition."

MSI Shows off R6970 and N580GTX Lightning Graphics Cards

MSI did a lot more than showing off its AMD Fusion "Brazos" Wind U270 notebook at today's press-meet in Taiwan. The company seems to have spilled its entire load for CES, just days ahead of it. Today's exposé included two new ultra-high end graphics cards under the company's Lightning series. The R6970 Lightning is based on AMD Radeon HD 6970, and the N580GTX Lightning, of course, on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580.

Both cards look nearly identical because their most peculiar part, the cooling assembly, is mostly the same. The Twin Frozr III from MSI combines slick looks with certain enhancements with the fan blade design (to improve noise to airflow ratio). Under the shroud is what looks to be a dense aluminum fin array to which heat is conveyed using several heat-pipes, including 8 mm thick ones. While the cooler more or less respects the 2-slot width, it increases the height of the cards by a good inch.

MSI Readies AMD Brazos-Powered Wind 12-inch Notebook

MSI jumped on the AMD Fusion "Brazos" bandwagon by showing off its first implementation based on the new platform. The company held a press-meet in Taipei well ahead of CES in hopes of giving its latest creation some exclusive exposure ahead of the mega event. The Wind U270 from MSI, is a 12-inch ultra-portable driven by AMD Fusion "Zacate" E-350 dual-core accelerated processing unit (APU), the x86-64 processor cores are clocked at 1.60 GHz, and feature the latest instruction sets. The APU embeds AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics that's DirectX 11 compliant, featuring UVD 3.0 video acceleration. The third key component is 4 GB of DDR3 memory.

The Wind U270 uses MSI's tried and tested 12-inch Wind chassis with Chiclet keyboard. Other hardware specifications include 320 GB (500 GB optional) hard drive based storage, WiFi b/g/n, gigabit Ethernet, display connectivity that includes D-Sub, and HDMI; two USB 3.0 ports, card reader, and VGA webcam. Although battery life isn't mentioned, the notebook features an Eco mode that conserves power.
