MSI Announces Faster GT680 Gaming Notebook

Who says laptops can't perform as fast as high-end desktops? MSI's new generation GT680 gaming laptop not only packs Intel 2nd Generation Core i7 quad core processor and NVIDIA's high-end DirectX 11-ready GeForce GTX 460M discrete graphics card, it also features four DDR3 memory slots, boosting memory capacity to 16GB, and accelerated dual SSD architecture, maximizing performance and putting it on par with the best desk tops out there.

Eric Kuo, associate vice president for global sales, MSI Notebook, points out that because MSI's R&D team insists on the best, MSI is able to roll out the world's fastest notebook computer-the GT680, which smashed speed records in PCMark Vantage tests with 18,162 points. Not only did it obtain the highest score ever for any laptop platform, it performs on average three times faster than other high-end gaming laptops currently on the market.

Intel 2nd Generation Core i7 quad core processor: The MSI GT680 features Intel's most advanced Intel 2nd Generation Core i7 quad core processor for better performance. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M discrete graphics card: MSI's GT680 comes with nVidia's new generation, high-end GeForce GTX 460M discrete graphics card with 1.5GB of GDDR5 memory. Erm, I'm talking about the Mobility 5000 series? If anything, the 6000 series will be more efficient and powerful. The problem with Fermi is that it's hot and expensive. While on the desktop market that may be fine (and also not being expensive on the desktop front either), in the mobile market that's just a big no-no.

then AMD doesnt have them beat in every segment like you claim, Nvidia claims the fastest single GPU (GTX480M) and fastest dual GPU setup (GTX460M SLi) and there are probably others in there they can best AMD on.

point is laptop manufacturers can go with either as both camps provide potent solutions.

Fermi isn't even that hot. People need to get that out of their head because its getting really old.

Fermi is fine to run in a laptop, theres a reason why laptop GPU are really toned down desktop equivalents.

the 6970M is slower than a HD6850 and is a barts core like the 68XX and the GTX485M is about the same performance of as a GTX465 - GTX470

can't compare desktop to mobile, and nvidia is currently faster

the problem is when people think of Fermi, the only thing that springs to their mind is a GTX470 or GTX480, which while hot, are only one specific Fermi based GPU, GF100.

there are now a few Fermi GPU's that run just fine in terms of heat, GF110, 104, 106 and 108, each with a few iterations.

I definitely agree that people need to get it out of their head that Fermi runs hot, the GTX480/570 did, and guess what, theyre both EOL now.

Personally I've never had a cooler running card than my current GTX460, albeit it comes stock with a non-nvidia-reference cooler, it doesnt exactly put out a butload of heat either, and its overclocked and overvolted.

Aye I still remember my 9700 Pro and X1900XT...man those things were mini ovens compared to my 460. I've finally clocked my 460 up past 800Mhz and it still runs cool. Fans do ramp up a little more than before but still aren't as loud as past GPUs i've had.

But this advert...if lying grew noses then MSI would have quite the honker from that ad :D

But why would you go for a GTX 480M when you could go for 2x5870s in CF, which are cheaper, consume less power and perform better?

Sorry, maybe I shouldn't have used hot. Although it might not get hot, it still consumes very large amounts of power for a mobile part. 100W for the GTX 480M/485M? While Fermi will not get 'hot' per say, it would still take quite a large cooler to dissipate that 100W of heat...

The 6970M should be on par with the 6870. Also, like above, why go for the GTX485M when you could go for two 5870s?

I'm not saying there is anything bad about NVIDIAs products, infact they are undoubtably more powerful than what AMD has to offer in the mobile segment, but the reason why AMD have NVIDIA beat this round is due to being priced right and not consuming as much power.

Can't believe all those ignorance in the mobile market. GTX480 =/= GTX480M, that is the first and foremost thing we have to take a look at. That said, Nvidia bins all the better chips to the mobile department, leaving the shittier ones to the desktop. Lastly, power consumption of the GTX4xx non GTX480 is actually very decent if you clock it down a bit (which is what happens in the mobile department). Lastly, running Crossfire consumes much more power than a single chip solutions, due to the 100w max for MXM standard.

TDP of the 460M is rumored to be about the 58xxM - about 70w

The 6970m is a downclocked HD6950 (960SP) so how it can somehow match a HD6870 is anyones guess.


The GTX485m should be quite a beast. It looks like it will be a downclocked version of the upcoming GTX560 (384SP etc). The TDP should be around 100W which given the performance isn't too bad at all. (Nvidia quote TDP as the whole MXM module whereas AMD quote GPU alone).

I can see one major reason why notebook manufacturers are going for Nvidia based GPU's and that is Optimus. Not only can it be used on the low end models (GT425m etc) but also the high end, giving a laptop like this a massive increase in battery life.

AMD currently don't have anything to properly match Optimus, they have switchable GPU's but it is clunky and no where near as good.

They might not have Optimus, but I can switch between my 4570 and 4200 onboard quite easily through CCC. Not much, but it can still be done and the power saving is still there.
