Google's Upcoming Tensor G5 and G6 Specs Might Have Been Revealed Early

Details of what is claimed to be Google's upcoming Tensor G5 and G6 SoCs have popped up over on Notebookcheck.net and the site claims to have found the specs on a public platform, without going into any further details. Those that were betting on the Tensor G5—codenamed Laguna—delivering vastly improved performance over the Tensor G4, are likely to be disappointed, at least on the CPU side of things. As previous rumours have suggested, the chip is expected to be manufactured by TSMC, using its N3E process node, but the Tensor G5 will retain the single Arm Cortex-X4 core, although it will see a slight upgrade to five Cortex-A725 cores vs. the three Cortex-A720 cores of the Tensor G4. The G5 loses two Cortex-A520 cores in favour of the extra Cortex-A725 cores. The Cortex-X4 will also remain clocked at the same peak 3.1 GHz as that of the Tensor G4.

Interestingly it looks like Google will drop the Arm Mali GPU in favour of an Imagination Technologies DXT GPU, although the specs listed by Notebookcheck doesn't add up with any of the specs listed by Imagination Technologies. The G5 will continue to support 4x 16-bit LPDDR5 or LPDDR5X memory chips, but Google has added support for UFS 4.0 memory, something that's been a point of complaint for the Tensor G4. Other new additions is support for 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 and PCI Express 4.0. Some improvements to the camera logic has also been made, with support for up to 200 Megapixel sensors or 108 Megapixels with zero shutter lag, but if Google will use such a camera or not is anyone's guess at this point in time.

2.1 Billion Pixels in Las Vegas Sphere are Powered by 150 NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPUs

The city of Las Vegas late last year added another attraction to its town: the Sphere. The Sphere is a 1.2 million pixel outdoor display venue famous for its massive size and inner 18,600-seat auditorium. The auditorium space is a feat of its own with features like a 16x16 resolution wraparound interior LED screen, speakers with beamforming and wave field synthesis technologies, and 4D physical effects. However, we have recently found out that NVIDIA GPUs power the Sphere. And not only a handful of them, as 150 NVIDIA RTX A6000 power the Sphere and its 1.2 million outside pixels spread on 54,000 m², as well as 16 of 16K inner displays with a total output of 2.1 billion pixels. Interestingly, the 150 NVIDIA RTX A6000 have a combined output cable number of 600 DisplayPort 1.4a ports.

With each card having 48 GB of memory, that equals to 7.2 TB of GDDR6 ECC memory in the total system. With the Sphere being a $2.3 billion project, it is expected to have an infotainment system capable of driving the massive venue. And it certainly delivers on that. Only a handful of cards powers most massive media projects, but this scale is something we see for the first time in non-AI processing systems. The only scale we are used to today is massive thousand-GPU clusters used for AI processing, so seeing a different and interesting application is refreshing.

This Week in Gaming (Week 14)

Don't worry, we haven't included any April fools games in this week's new releases, even though we're about to enter the first week of April. However, the month of April doesn't exactly start with a bang when it comes to new games, in fact, it feels a bit like the first week of the year, as there's no major release this week. What we do have on offer includes paws, pixels, rage quitting, beats and a sprinkling of Valhalla.

"Sons of Valhalla" Release Date Confirmed: April 5

Pixel Chest and Hooded Horse are excited to share that their upcoming action/base-building hybrid Sons of Valhalla will release on PC next month on April 5th, 2024. Pixel Chest Games' unique Viking-themed adventure will set players on a perilous journey as they cut a swathe through England, all in a bid to reclaim what was lost. Sons of Valhalla combines side-scrolling combat with base-building strategy in a beautiful pixel-art Viking Age world. Players assume the guise of Thorald Olavson, a warrior hell-bent on tracking down the Jarl who burned down his home and kidnapped his beloved. Backed by Odin himself, players must build fortresses, gather resources, and lay siege to enemy strongholds, challenging key leaders in single combat as they conquer their way across England.

But Thorald isn't a demi-god, nor is he a one-man army. Players must ensure they build up their position and recruit a large enough warband to tackle the menagerie of foes that await them—each one requiring specific tactics to defeat. Siege engines will be needed to overcome defensive walls, and runes can be collected to further augment Thorald and his warriors' skills. These runes can also be offered up as a sacrifice should players find themselves in front of Odin again…
