Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 Edition Slated for March 11

AMD's Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 Edition, a special variant of the Radeon HD 5870, is slated for release on the 11th of March, according to a recent report. The Eyefinity6 Edition makes use of the six TMDS signal lines of Radeon HD 5870 to drive six display-heads. On the connectivity front, there are six mini-DisplayPort connectors. Using the included dongles, the card can connect to six displays with full-HD resolution, which can then be merged using the ATI Eyefinity technology to form one or more Eyefinity display-heads. The GPU and memory use reference clock speeds of 850/1200 MHz (core/memory), while there is 2 GB of GDDR5 memory on board.

The other AMD product that AMD will be releasing a little sooner is the Radeon HD 5830, a performance-segment graphics card that aims at a sweet-spot price of somewhere between $150~$250, delivering performance in existing applications on par or better than the Radeon HD 4890, but with a lot more future-proofing, DirectX 11 compliance, Eyefinity support, and lower target energy draws. We expect the Radeon HD 5830 to have 1120 stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory, and clock speeds of 800/1000 MHz (core/memory). The market release of Radeon HD 5830 and Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6 are strategically timed to coincide with those of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 400 series graphics cards.

ASUS Launches ROG G73Jh Gaming Notebook

The new ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) G73Jh is like no other gaming notebook. Eschewing the flash and gimmicks typical of gaming notebooks, the G73Jh instead boasts an understated, subtly aggressive design inspired by a stealth fighter. At its heart lies the most powerful components available today, including the latest Intel Core i7 processor, DirectX 11-capable ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics, and up to 8 GB of DDR3 system memory.

The G73Jh sports a striking angular design inspired by the iconic F-117 Nighthawk. ASUS Radeon HD 5870 MATRIX 2GB Graphics Card Pictured

ASUS' Republic of Gamers MATRIX series of graphics cards is getting a new member, the EAH5870 MATRIX. This model, based on the ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPU has high-end construction, cooling, and voltage regulators, out of the box higher clock speeds, overclocking headroom, and twice the amount of memory: 2 GB. The cooler and backplate design resembles that of ASUS' GeForce GTX 285 MATRIX.

The clock speeds on this card stand at 900 MHz (core) and 1225 MHz (memory, 4900 MHz effective). The card seems to have a stronger VRM circuit that supports higher clock speeds. It draws power from two 8-pin PCI-Express connectors. Display connectivity includes one each of DVI-D, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

Overclocker-friendly features may include ASUS' VoltageTweak software voltage control, a "safe mode" button that falls back to failsafe clock speed and voltage settings, among other things. There is no word on its availability, though we expect to learn more about this card at the upcoming CeBIT event.

ASUS Radeon HD 5870 TOP and HD 5850 DirectCu Pictured

ASUS is readying a new factory-overclocked, custom-design graphics card based on the ATI Radeon HD 5870 GPU, likely named the EAH5870-TOP. The company is also readying the Radeon HD 5850 based EAH5850 DirectCu. While the EAH5870-TOP is expected to have high out of the box clock speeds, a higher performance sporty-looking cooler, the EAH5850 DirectCu relies on a more function-centric cooler design that boasts of being 35% quieter and 20% cooler [than reference AMD cooler]. Further details, such as clock speeds are not known, but it is expected that ASUS will release these during CeBIT 2010, later this quarter.

ASUS Designing Dual-HD 5870 Graphics Accelerator?

ASUS is known to toy with bleeding-edge technology to give out high-end products. Earlier, ASUS put two GeForce GTX 285 GPUs into one accelerator to give out a custom-design product that outperformed NVIDIA's dual-GPU GeForce GTX 295. According to o.v.e.r.clockers.at, ASUS might be doing something similar, this time around with AMD's Cypress GPUs in its Radeon HD 5870 avatar. It is said to be working on a dual-HD 5870 graphics card, codenamed "Ares".

While the dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 uses full-featured AMD Cypress GPUs (with all its stream processors and memory bus width available), ASUS will attempt to use the one disparity between an HD 5970 and two HD 5870 to its advantage: clock speeds. The Cypress GPUs in HD 5970 feature lower clock speeds (725/1000 MHz core/memory) compared to the single Cypress GPU on the HD 5870 (850/1200 MHz). Electrical constraints are probably the reason behind this. It is likely that ASUS will use stronger VRM circuitry to power the two GPUs to run at higher speeds, while also providing some overclocking headroom.

AMD in a recent conference call to the press said that it didn't expect to see custom-design HD 5970-like accelerators till Q2 2010, although we don't infer there to be any sort of restriction in place, as was the case with NVIDIA and its GTX 295. Ares is likely named after the Greek God of warfare by the name. An apt successor to Mars (which also happens to be the name of the Roman God of war), ASUS' previous attempt at an extreme high-end graphics card of its own design.

MSI HD 5870 Lightning disassembled

As we previously reported, MSI is working on a Lightning Edition of the ATI Radeon HD 5870. The card will be designed with overclockers in mind and comes with two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors for maximum power delivery. It also has easily accessible measuring points for the GPU voltages - a voltmodder's dream. Today we received several new pictures from an anonymous source in Taiwan that shows the card in all its glory.

3DMark Vantage World Record Feat Cracks P47002

A team of overclockers Sampsa and Stummerwinter set a new world-record score for 3DMark Vantage (Performance preset). The duo set the record using a test-bed made of Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Edition, four ASUS ATI Radeon HD 5870 in CrossFireX mode, 6 GB of Corsair Dominator GTX2, and the upcoming ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard to seat it all.

The Core i7 975 XE processor sailed through to 5508.9 MHz (27 x 204 MHz @ 1.664V, HTT on), with the memory running at 2040 MHz DDR (7-8-7-21). The four ASUS Radeon HD 5870 cards were hand-picked from a batch of 18 pieces. Core/memory speeds of 1325 MHz / 1300 MHz, were set. Catalyst drivers version 9.12 were used for the record feat.

The team achieved a 3DMark Vantage score of P47002, with a GPU score of 53,911 points, and CPU score of 33,949. To cool the machine, F1 EE & Tek 9.0 liquid nitrogen evapourators were used for the GPUs and CPU. The duo credit their success (besides their skills), to Kinc and Christian from ASUS and Thomas from Intel.

Gigabyte Working on Radeon HD 5870 1 GHz Super Overclock Model

Gigabyte is expanding its Super Overclock family of graphics cards with a highly tweaked model based on the ATI Radeon HD 5870. The Gigabyte GV-R587SO-1GD features a complete design overhaul over AMD's reference design, with the card sporting a typical Gigabyte-blue colored PCB, and a custom-design double-slot VGA cooler. The PCB uses Gigabyte's Ultra Durable VGA construction which makes use of a PCB with 2 oz copper layer, ferrite core chokes, low RDS (on) MOSFETs, and Japanese solid-state capacitors. The VGA cooler consists of a GPU base from which four copper heat pipes convey heat to aluminum fin blocks cooled by two 90 mm fans.

The GV-R587SO-1GD comes with out of the box clock speeds of 1000 MHz (core), and 1300 MHz / 5.20 GHz effective (memory), against reference AMD clock speeds of 850 MHz (core) and 1200 MHz / 4.80 GHz (memory). ATI Eyefinity support is retained with a display connectivity that resembles the reference design: two DVI-D, and one each of DisplayPort and HDMI. The GPU features DirectX 11 compliance, 1600 stream processors, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. It connects to 1 GB of memory.

MSI Shows off R5870 Lightning and R5850 Cyclone

MSI is ready with two new custom-design graphics cards based on the ATI Radeon HD 5800 graphics processors: the R5870 Lightning and R5850 Cyclone. The R5870 Lightning, as expected features a Twin-Frozr II dual-fan VGA cooler designed by MSI on a custom-designed PCB which makes some high-grade components, specifically in the card's VRM area (12-phase PWM, dual 8-pin PCI-E power input), to make it fare better at overclocking. Other notable features include v-check points and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory across the GPU's 256-bit wide memory interface. Connectivity cluster resembles that of the AMD reference design, retaining Eyefinity technology support. The R5850 Cyclone, on the other hand, uses the familiar Cyclone GPU cooler MSI used in the past on some Radeon HD 4800 series graphics cards. MSI designed its own PCB here too, but with a few smart cost-cuttings, although the quality of the components used isn't affected. The two will be out in this quarter.

PowerColor Introduces HD 5800 PCS+ Series Graphics Cards

TUL Corporation, a leading manufacturer of AMD graphics cards, adds its own cooling solution to the HD5800 series: PCS+ HD5870 and PCS+ HD5850. Both products embrace the supremacies of PCS+ series features, which equip with superior factory overccloked setting and exclusive cooling solution; and maximize the ultimate gaming performance in the coolest working environment.

PCS+ HD5870 and PCS+ HD5850 clock at 875MHz / 760MHz core speed respectively, while memory clock at 1225MHz / 1050MHz respectively. The factory overclocked ability ensures gaming efficacy can effortlessly go beyond the standard version, and provides the out of box gaming performance gamers have never felt before.

AMD developer page reveals HD 5800 Mobility Series

AMD's Catalyst PC Vendor ID List has been updated to reflect their latest product updates, which surprisingly includes "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800" models.

The models listed are "Broadway XT", "Broadway Pro/LT". While it is certain that Broadway XT will become the Mobility Radeon HD 5870, sources differ whether Broadway Pro/LT will be two distinct products initially: Mobility Radeon HD 5850 and Mobility Radeon HD 5830 or if there will be only a Mobility Radeon HD 5850 product first.

In addition to these confirmed models there are rumors about that describe "Madison" (Mobility HD 5700) and "Park" (Mobility HD 5400). This would give AMD a full mobile DirectX 11 low-power GPU lineup to compete in the mobile market.

MSI Readies HD 5870 Lightning Graphics Card

MSI is designing a high-end graphics card based on the ATI Radeon HD 5870, to be featured in its Lightning series of overclocking-friendly graphics cards. A PCB drawing of the same surfaced recently, revealing a taller than usual PCB, with a high-grade VRM to support high-levels of overclocking, among other noticeable features. The PCB seems to have a 12-phase vGPU and 3-phase vMEM, it is fed by two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors, though it remains to be seen if MSI places two actual 8-pin connectors. Some parts of the PCB make use of high-C surface-mount capacitors. The display connectivity cluster seems to be identical to that of the reference design PCB, with two DVI-D, and one each of HDMI and DisplayPort. It is likely that MSI uses a high-end cooler for this card, perhaps similar to the Twin Frozr II design. More information will surface during the upcoming CES event.

NVIDIA Pitches GeForce GTX 300 Series to Clinch Performance Crown

NVIDIA's latest DirectX 11 compliant GPU architecture, codenamed "Fermi," is getting its first consumer graphics (desktop) implementation in the form of the GeForce GTX 300 series. The nomenclature turned from being obvious to clear, with a set of company slides being leaked to the media, carrying the GeForce GTX 300 series names for the two products expected to come out first: GeForce GTX 380, and GeForce GTX 360. The three slides in public domain as of now cover three specific game benchmarks, where the two graphics cards are pitted against AMD's Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5970, being part of the company's internal tests.

Tests include Resident Evil 5 (HQ settings, 1920x1200, 8x AA, DX10), STALKER Clear Sky (Extreme quality, No AA, 1920 x 1200, DX10), and Far Cry 2 (Ultra High Quality, 1920x1200, 8x AA, DX10). Other GPUs include GeForce GTX 295 and GTX 285 for reference, just so you know how NVIDIA is pitting the two against the Radeon HD 5000 GPUs, given that the figures are already out. With all the three tests, GTX 380 emerged on top, with GTX 360 performing close to the HD 5970. A point to note, however, is that the tests were run at 1920 x 1200, and tests have shown that the higher-end HD 5000 series GPUs, particularly the HD 5970, is made for resolutions higher than 1920 x 1200. AA was also disabled in STALKER Clear Sky. NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 300 will be out in Q1 2010.

Update (12/15): NVIDIA's Director of Public Relations EMEAI told us that these slides are fake, but also "when it's ready it's going to be awesome".

Thermalright Readies VRM Heatsinks for Radeon HD 5800 Series Graphics Cards

Closely following up the launch of its SpitFire VGA Cooler, air-cooling specialist Thermalright introduced the VRM-R4 and VRM-R3 graphics card VRM heatsinks designed for AMD Radeon HD 5800 series graphics cards. In many ways, these two heatsinks resemble the VRM-R1 and VRM-R2, which the company introduced back in July, for the Radeon HD 4800 series accelerators.

The new VRM-R3 and VRM-R4 measure 122 x 85 x 99 mm and 133 x 53 x 127 mm (LxWxH), respectively, and consist of baseplates that double up as small heatsinks, from which, two 6 mm heatpipes convey heat to an aluminum fin array big enough to mount 80 mm fans. For the VRM-R3, this fin array propagates perpendicular to the plane of the motherboard, while for the VRM-R4, is goes along the plane. Like their predecessors, the two should be compatible with popular Thermalright GPU coolers such as HR-03 Rev.A, HR-03 GT, HR-03 GT V2, T-Rad2, and T-Rad2 GTX. Pricing isn't known as yet.

AMD Preparing Radeon HD 5950 for Q1 2010?

Close to two weeks after launching the industry's fastest graphics card with the Radeon HD 5970 2 GB, it looks like AMD will back the release with another high-end graphics card in Q1 2010, ideally to stack up a lineup against NVIDIA's performance DirectX 11 offerings that are slated for around the same time. The new release comes in the form of Radeon HD 5950, aimed to occupy the gap between the Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5970.

The Radeon HD 5950 will retain the design methodology of the HD 5970. It will use two AMD Cypress GPUs with the same configuration Radeon HD 5850 uses. It has 1440 stream processors enabled per GPU, 72 TMUs and 32 ROPs enabled, and 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interfaces per GPU probably to hold 2 GB of total memory. Just as the dual-GPU HD 5970 uses lower clock speeds compared to the single-GPU HD 5870 that uses the same GPU, HD 5950 keeps up with the trend. It is expected to have its core clocked between 650~675 MHz, and memory at 900~1000 MHz (3.60 GHz to 4.00 GHz effective).

CoolIT Systems Readies Water-Cooling System for Radeon HD 5870

CoolIT Systems, of the Domino A.L.C. CPU cooler fame, has detailed plans of another turnkey water-cooling system, this time for the ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card. The water-cooling system is factory-assembled, requiring you to merely install the water-blocks on the graphics cards, and placing the radiator, which triples up as the reservoir and pump, in an appropriate location.

From the CGI drawings that the company released, it looks like a single unit of this water-cooling system will be able to cool two Radeon HD 5870 cards. The radiator unit looks to be as big as most radiators that can hold two 120 mm fans per side. The water-blocks look to be full-coverage (on the obverse side of the PCB), and monolithic, while the reverse side of the PCB seems to need to rely on AMD's back-plate. In the upcoming 2 GB variant of the Radeon HD 5870, the back-plate will find greater utility. Water-cooling typically provides higher overclocking headroom, and lower effective noise output. CoolIT's Radeon HD 5870 WC system will be unveiled today at the AMD Technical Forum & Exhibition 2009 in Taipei.

Danger Den Announces DD-5870 Water Block

Danger Den continues to extend their broad line of full coverage video card blocks with the new ATI 5870 water block. The DD-5870 block is a single slot solution cooling all of the major heat components including the GPU, RAM, power mofsets, and more.

The DD-5870 block is designed to have superior cooling performance while minimizing the pressure loss across the block. This combined with other Danger Den blocks maintains a high flow rate through the entire system maximizing the cooling performance of all the components.

Radeon HD 5750 Pictured, Tested

A Chinese tech community MyMyPC.com member pictured, and tested a Radeon HD 5750 graphics accelerator, which is intended to be AMD's flagship product in the sub $150 market segment. Unlike the Radeon HD 5770, which is pictured with a different cooler that resembles that of the Radeon HD 4770 (AMD reference), and Radeon HD 3870, this card makes do with a GPU cooler essentially similar to that of the more common Radeon HD 4770 cooler design, except for a few changes with the fan and the cooler shroud. Under the black, egg-shaped shroud is a heatsink with radially-projecting fins, in which is nested a red 80 mm fan. Everything else on the card, relies on its air-flow.

ASUS HD 5870 Overclocks to 1035/1290 MHz on Air, Aces 3DMark Vantage in CrossFireX

Here is what four AMD Cypress GPUs can achieve with some careful overclocking, without needing any third-party cooling. Renowned overclocker Kinc sent us details of his latest achievement using four ASUS Radeon HD 5870 1 GB cards installed in a 4-way CrossFireX setup, all overclocked, and cooled by AMD's reference cooler, taking a shot at 3DMark Vantage (Extreme Preset). The four cards returned a score of X26,332 points, with an average frame-rate of 79.49 fps in GT1, and 74.83 fps in GT2.

To begin with the cards were overclocked to 1035/1290 MHz, up from reference speeds of 850/1200 MHz (core/memory). This was supported by raising the vGPU to 1.330V using GPUTool, from 1.015V. The platform to drive this feat comprised of an Intel Core i7 965 XE processor, cooled by Intel's reference (boxed) cooler, clocked at 4257 MHz. To seat them all was an ASUS P6T7 WS SuperComputer motherboard. The feat serves as a prelude to what the future holds in two "Hemlock" accelerators, which make use of two Radeon HD 5870 GPUs each.

TechPowerUp Radeon BIOS Editor v1.22 Released

TechPowerUp Radeon BIOS Editor (RBE), has been updated to version 1.22. RBE is our popular ATI Radeon graphics cards BIOS tweaking manipulation utility. One of the main highlights of this release is early support for the Radeon HD 5870 graphics accelerator, among other changes that enhance the application's functionality and stability. The following changes are listed by its developer:
  • Added clock tuning wizard.
  • Changed fan controller bug workaround settings' description to point out what it does a little better.
  • Improved program's startup routine.
  • Fixed "GetClockPos reported 0"-error that came up on loading several 4xx0-BIOSes.
  • Added preliminary support for Radeon 5870. Note that I'm still not sure about 5850's DeviceID and that signature saving and loading will most likely not work properly on 5xx0s with this version. Furthermore, VT1165 programming is not functioning yet.

EK Water Blocks Readying Radeon HD 5870 Water Block

Slovenian water-cooling components specialist EK Water Blocks is readying one of the first water blocks for the AMD Radeon HD 5870 accelerator. Called EK FCS5870, it is a full-coverage water block from the looks of it, cooling all essential components on the PCB, including the GPU, memory, and VRM. The first picture below shows a CAD drawing of a design candidate. The second one is a picture of the ready copper block sans its top, revealing the water channel, and the heat-dissipation ribs over the GPU area. EK intends to complete the design of the FCS5870 by the end of this month.

AMD Radeon HD 5870 X2 Pictured

Behold AMD's, and soon aimed to be the industry's most powerful graphics accelerator: Radeon HD 5870 X2 "Hemlock". Armed with two "Cypress" Radeon HD 5870 graphics processors, this dual-GPU monstrosity packs twice the shader compute power. From the looks of it, the card is slightly longer than its single-GPU sibling from the series, and is better ventilated, although the cooler design more or less resembles it. It draws its power from one 6+2 pin and one 6 pin PCI-E power connectors, just like two of its ancestors in the R700 and R680. Listed for pre-order on a European online store, a Radeon HD 5870 X2 by Club3D is priced at 677 EUR (incl. applicable taxes, 568.9 EUR excluding).
