MSI Afterburner Finally Gets a Big Update

MSI Afterburner has been finally updated to a new version, the v4.6.5, bringing support for NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series and AMD Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards. MSI Afterburner has been one of the most popular overclocking and monitoring tools for graphics cards, especially since the EVGA Precision X has been discontinued, but it has hit a snag back in 2022 when the developer was not paid by MSI.

The latest update is a big milestone for Afterburner, as the new version 4.6.5 is a stable release and comes after the Afterburner was not updated in a while due to the fact that the developer Alexey Nicolaychuk, who goes by the name Unwinder over at Guru3D, was not paid by MSI. While there were BETA updates in the meantime, there has not been a stable release since 2019. The new version adds support for both NVIDIA RTX 40 series and AMD Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, adds experimental support for Intel's 13th Gen Core CPUs and AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs, as well as brings plenty of other fixes.

Update: Unwinder notified us that the previous stable Afterburner 4.6.4 release was published in the end of 2021 (03.12.2021).

Ryzen 7000X3D Series: A Brief Technical Chat with AMD

Earlier this month, AMD wrapped up the launch of its incredible Ryzen 7000X3D processor series, which storms the company's gaming performance competitiveness against Intel back to the top, setting it up for the crucial Spring-Summer season, when PC gamers tend to upgrade and play the latest games. The 3D Vertical Cache memory deployed on the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 7900X3D, and Ryzen 7 7800X3D, supercharges the gaming performance of these processors, and our testing has shown that the 7800X3D is all that an elite gaming PC build needs if all you're doing is playing games with some domestic productivity on the side; whereas the 7950X3D is for those into heavy content creation and application workloads besides gaming, which means AMD levels up to Intel on both fronts.

We have extensively covered the technical aspects of what 3D Vertical Cache is, and how it works, in our reviews of the 7950X3D and 7800X3D. It is a fast 64 MB slice of SRAM cache stacked on top of the 32 MB on-die L3 cache of "Zen 4" chiplets, which extends the L3 cache size to 96 MB. This has a profound impact on gaming workloads, as the CPU cores have more amount of game data at much lower latency than DRAM. As part of our coverage of the Ryzen 7000X3D processor series, we had the opportunity to interview AMD on some of the technical aspects of Ryzen 7000X3D processor series. We also took the opportunity to ask a few general questions about the Ryzen 7000 desktop processor series itself. You can also catch our interview with Robert Hallock, the former technical marketing head, for some additional questions that you may find relevant.

Giga Computing Announces Entry-Level AMD Ryzen-based Servers

Giga Computing, a subsidiary of GIGABYTE and an industry leader in high-performance servers, server motherboards, and workstations, today announced new GIGABYTE servers for the AMD Ryzen 7000 series processor that are highly cost-effective, high performing, and enterprise feature rich. The line that separated data centers from personal users is not so clear because modern desktop processors have a respectable CPU core count and impressive multi-threading performance, laying the foundation for infrastructure that is highly manageable, scalable, and efficient. Installing a consumer CPU platform into an enterprise rack solution provides a low-cost barrier to entry-level servers that are typically used for dedicated hosting, cloud gaming, code development, and content creation.

Of the four new 1U GIGABYTE servers, the E133-C10 is a short-depth edge server, whereas the R133-C10, R133-C11, and R133-C13 are traditional rack servers. This spectrum of entry-level servers allows for excellent price points to be reached with each model having its unique advantage whether that be the need for dual 10GbE ports or support for a dual-slot GPU. On the more budget friendly side are the E133-C10 and R133-C10 servers that are very similar and have been designed to support an AMD Ryzen 7000 "Zen 4" series processor up to 105 W TDP. Conversely, the R133-C11 and R133-C13 have additional support for the full spectrum of processors up to 170 W TDP and a power delivery system for a discrete GPU, so they will be used for 3D modeling, machine learning, VDI, and more. Last, each server comes with a 80+ Platinum rated power supply, and buyers can talk to our sales if they prefer a 80+ Titanium unit. Because this is a low power server it will surely to be deployed in homes, offices, and colocation centers.

AMD Delays "Phoenix" 7040HS Series Mobile CPUs to April

If you were one of those that were waiting with bated breath for AMD's Zen 4 based "Phoenix" line-up of mobile CPUs, you're going to be waiting a little longer. Late on Friday afternoon AMD announced that they have delayed the launch of their Ryzen Mobile 7040HS series of CPUs, pushing the expected launch window from late March to some time in April. Speculation abound as to why this may be, but the direct correspondence from AMD's PR department is sparse:
To align with platform readiness and ensure the best possible user experience, we now expect our OEM partners to launch the first notebooks powered by Ryzen 7040HS Series processors in April.
As a refresher on the "Phoenix" line of CPUs these are the next-generation Zen 4 based monolithic SoCs built on TSMC's 4 nm process first announced back in January. These chips feature up to 8 Zen 4 cores with turbo clocks reaching 5 to 5.2 GHz, an RDNA3 based integrated GPU with clocks as high as 3 GHz, and AMD's first AI coprocessor dubbed Ryzen AI. Despite being Zen 4 these SoCs are still using PCI-E Gen 4 but are not hamstrung by a lack of lanes like some previous generations. We've already seen substantial leaks over the past few days hinting at the performance of these chips which suggests they will offer good competition to Intel's shipping 13th Gen Raptor Lake mobile offerings.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Gets Listed in Europe

Those that are waiting for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D are in luck as the April 6th launch is just around the corner, and although we knew that the US launch price is set at $449, AMD did not give out any details about the price in Europe. Thankfully, first listings have started to appear, showing it in some stores at €530. Earlier, Computerbase gave an estimated price of around €509, considering that other two SKUs, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D and the Ryzen 9 7900X3D, both are 13 percent more expensive in Europe.

As spotted earlier by Videocardz, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has appeared in Slovenia, listed at €530, which is pretty close to the estimated price. Another listing from Germany shows it listed at €607, which is a bit more expensive. This comes as a surprise considering that the tax in Slovenia is 22 percent, while in Germany it is set at 19 percent. Of course, some stores will try to add the early adopters tax as well, raising the price well above the MSRP, as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D could be quite popular.

AMD Radeon 780M iGPU Performance Shows Up in Geekbench

A new benchmark of the AMD Radeon 780M RDNA3-based iGPU has now been spotted in Geekbench, showing it to be on par with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. The benchmark was done on the announced AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS CPU, which is a part of AMD's 4 nm Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" lineup. The CPU in question is an 8-core/16-thread SKU with 40 MB of cache. It works at 3.8 GHz base and 5.1 GHz boost clocks and has a TDP of 35 W to 45 W. The same CPU comes with Radeon 780M RDNA3 iGPU with 12 Compute Units (CUs), for a total of 768 Stream Processors, and works at 2700 MHz.

The Geekbench OpenCL benchmark was fired up on a Chinese laptop with 32 GB of RAM and running on the Windows balanced power plan, where it scored a decent 36,757 points. This score puts it somewhere around the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 and AMD Radeon RX 480 discrete graphics cards. This is an impressive result considering that this is a mid-SKU in the announced Ryzen 7040 series. Of course, we still do not know the specified TDP for this laptop, or what memory was used, so results might be slightly different. Since these laptops are yet to appear in retail, AMD is probably still tweaking the drivers, so we expect these numbers could be even higher for the full release.

In a Youtube video released on March 10, AMD's Jason Banta has announced the availability of the world's most powerful mobile processor, the Ryzen 9 7945HX. He listed the OEM partners who have integrated the 7945HX into flagship level laptop models. He also declared that this range topping CPU is a competition beater. Gaming benchmark tests have demonstrated that the Ryzen 9 7945HX beats Intel's Raptor Lake Core i9-13950HX by an average margin of 10%.

AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX Beats Higher Priced 13th Gen Core i7 Mobile Processor Options in Gaming Performance and Battery

AMD "Zen 4" processors offer unmatched efficiency at lower power, and notebook manufacturers are beginning to notice that the company's high core-count Ryzen 7045HX series "Dragon Range" mobile processors offer performance and battery-life highly competitive to 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" processors. The Ryzen 7 7745HX is an 8-core/16-thread processor with a single 5 nm "Zen 4" chiplet, and default TDP of 55 W. Chinese tech publication Golden Pig Upgrade reviewed a notebook powered by the 7745HX, and compared it with one rocking a Core i7-13700HX 8P+8E. The reviewer found the 7745HX to offer superior performance/Watt and gaming performance that either matches or beats the "Raptor Lake," which is held back by aggressive power-management and an older 10 nm-class process node.

AMD's Reviewers Guide for the Ryzen 9 7950X3D Leaks

AMD's Ryzen 7000-series CPUs with 3D V-Cache are set to launch next week and alongside the launch, there will obviously be reviews of the upcoming CPUs. As with many other companies, AMD prepared a reviewers guide for the media, to give them some guidance, as well as expected benchmark numbers based on the test hardware AMD used in-house. Parts of that reviewers guide has now appeared online, courtesy of a site called HD Tecnologia. For those that can't wait until next week's reviews, this gives a glimpse of what to expect, at least based on the games tested by AMD.

AMD put the Ryzen 9 7950X3D up against Intel's Core i9 13900K, both systems were equipped with 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory and liquid cooling. Tests were done with both AMD's own Radeon RX 7900 XTX and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. We won't go into details of the various benchmarks here, as you can find those below, but according to AMD's figures, AMD came out on top with a 5.6 percent win over the Intel CPU, at 1080p using the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and by 6 percent using the GeForce RTX 4090. This was across 22 different games, with Horizon Zero Dawn and F1 2021 being the games favouring the AMD CPU the most and Far Cry 6 and the CPU test in Ashes of the Singularity being the games favouring the AMD CPU the least. TechPowerUp will of course have a review ready for your perusing by the time the new CPUs launches next week, so you'll have to wait until then to see if AMD's own figures hold true or not.
