HP today expanded its notebook PC line with products and services that provide an optimal combination of sleek style, ultra-portability and high performance to deliver an outstanding mobile experience.The company also launched HP DataPass, a pre-paid 3G mobile broadband service available in the U.S. across HP's business notebook lineup and expanded HP Beats Audio technology to a business notebook and consumer Mini PC. HP furthered its FORGE business notebook design framework with the HP ProBook m-series and EliteBook p-series models and built upon its MUSE consumer notebook design philosophy with the HP Mini 210, Pavilion dv4 and ENVY 14.

Tablet PCs came and went, but "tablets" as a category began with the Apple iPad. Merely weeks after its launch, the rattled PC OEM industry announced plans for their tablets, some being ARM-based and driven by Google's touch-phone optimized Android OS, and some using x86 processors and Windows 7. Unfortunately, Windows 7 based tablets aren't cutting it in the market, and the problem is with the user-interface (UI) itself. While Windows 7 has a touchscreen/pen software framework, its UI is more PC-like. Menu items, buttons with applications, are not very optimized for a comfortable touch-only input device.

Hence, Microsoft seems to be expediting the release of Windows 8 for Tablets, and the software giant plans to do that as early as by CES 2012. Only the tablet version of Windows 8 will be released then, not the PC version.

ASUS' much talked about tablet, the Eee Slate EP121 was officially unveiled at CES. The 12-inch tablet features hardware specifications which aren't very "Eee", so to speak. To begin with, it's not based on the Atom Pine Trail platform, but instead uses a relatively powerful Core i5-470UM dual-core processor clocked at 1.33 GHz (1.86 GHz Turbo Boost), with 3 MB L3 cache, HyperThreding, and Intel HD 2000 graphics. The CPU is backed by 2 or 4 GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory. Storage is care of 32 or 64 GB SSD.

The Eee Slate EP121 runs Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with all its touch-input features enabled. The 12.1" multi-touch screen sports a screen resolution of 1280 x 800. Apart from directly touching the UI, users can also use the provided digitizer pen that can let you write in your handwriting, which the software tries to make sense of and converts to text. Connectivity includes USB 2.0 ports, WiFi b/g/n, and Bluetooth 3.0. Other features include 2-channel HD audio, mini-HDMI display output, 3-in-1 card reader, and built-in stereo speakers. Prices start at US $1000, and goes up depending on memory amount and SSD size opted for.

The Government of India today unveiled the much talked about 10 Dollar Tablet PC for students. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal unveiled the tablet which is initially priced at 1,500 Indian Rupees (US $30), but is expected distributed for 500 Rupees ($10) once manufacturing is streamlined. The device is named Sakshat (meaning "personification" in Sanskrit), and boasts of performance-grade hardware for a device of its class. It has a 10.5-inch multi-touch colour screen, ARM processor, 2 GB of memory, cloud storage, WiFi b/g and 10/100 Ethernet for connectivity with school networks, a highly-customised OS based on the Linux kernel, supporting Adobe Flash for online videos and interactive educational content, and a digital camera.

School curriculum will be distributed to students in an interactive format, as well as drive "e-classrooms" for live-streaming classes from eminent teachers to students from across the country. The device supports OpenOffice.org and open document formats, as well as Adobe PDF, and various multimedia formats. Sakshat was developed by students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) from various IIT institutes across the country. As part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology, Sakshat will be backed by a network connecting 18,000 educational institutions and 400 universities.

MSI is showing off to the public two new tablet PCs at at the DCC event in UAE. While the two are yet to be named, they are most likely to be part of the company's Wind PC lineup for this year's Computex event. The first one is a standard (monolithic) tablet with a 9.7 inch multi-touch screen, which will be running Windows 7, will be powered by Intel Atom processors, taking advantage of its multi-touch UI features, while the second more interesting one has the clam-shell design traditional netbooks, albeit having multi-touch screens on both its arms. You can use it like a netbook when one of the two screens draws a touch-screen keyboard, or use both screens vertically to browse through documents, e-books, and web-pages like reading a book. Always Innovating today unveiled the Touch Book, a versatile new device that works as both a netbook and a tablet thanks to a detachable keyboard and a 3D touchscreen user interface. The Touch Book, previewed at DEMO 09, weighs less than two pounds as a netbook and has a battery life of 10 to 15 hours -- three times longer than most netbooks.
"The Touch Book is perfect for these tough economic times because you can use it in so many ways," said Gregoire Gentil, founder of Always Innovating and creator of the Touch Book. "You can use it as a netbook computer, a hand-held game device, or a video player. You can even reverse the keyboard to prop it up on a table in an inverted 'V'. Finally, because it is magnetic, you can remove the keyboard and put the tablet on the fridge to serve as a kitchen computer or digital frame."

Nearly seven months after the Latitude XT was first shown to the world, Dell is finally making its first Tablet PC available to consumers. Dell says that its new 3.53-pound Latitude XT is a ground-breaking device and is among the thinnest and lightest in its class. The 12.1" WXGA (1280 x 800) traditional CCFL or LED-backlit display of Latitude XT has both pen and capacitive touch technology. Capacitive touch allows users to manipulate items on the screen without the need to apply pressure directly to the display. The Latitude XT is built around Intel's Core 2 Solo (1.06GHz) or Core 2 Duo ULV (1.2GHz) processor and comes equipped with a Radeon X1250 UMA graphics, up to 3GB memory, up to 120GB 5400 rpm drive, or 64GB SSD option. The system features a base price of $2,499, with orders for the system to begin shipments before year's end.
