Intel Demos Thunderbolt Running at 80 Gbps During its Technology Tour 2022

The recent 80 Gbps USB4 Version 2.0 standard looks set to get company from Thunderbolt at 80 Gbps in the not too distant future, as Intel has demoed its next generation Thunderbolt hardware to the media during its Technology Tour 2022 in Israel. It doesn't appear that Intel showed too much of the upcoming technology, but the company did apparently show it running at 80 Gbps, or if you want to be picky, two times 40 Gbps in dual link mode, much in the same way USB4 Version 2.0 will operate.

According to Tom's Hardware, Intel hasn't set the marketing name in stone quite yet, so it's not clear what Intel will be calling its next generation of Thunderbolt. What is clear is that Intel will continue to deliver on its own Thunderbolt products, despite USB4 having almost feature parity with Thunderbolt, apart from some Intel platform specific features. What is also unknown, is a potential availability date for Intel's next generation of Thunderbolt, but an educated guess will be before USB4 Version 2.0 launches.

USB4 Version 2.0 Said to get 120 Gbps Asymmetric Mode

It was only yesterday that the USB Promoters Group announced the USB4 Version 2.0 spec with support for speeds of up to 80 Gbps, something TechPowerUp mentioned at the end of our USB4 article back in June. Now details of a 120 Gbps asymmetric mode has popped up, courtesy of Angstronomics and we've managed to confirm that it is indeed something that is coming from one of our own sources. We were in fact told back in June that the 80 Gbps mode was meant to be asymmetric, but this was not mentioned in the recent press release.

The 120 Gbps mode will use three of the four data pairs for upstream data and the fourth 40 Gbps data pair will be for downstream data from and to the host controller.Asymmetric data transfers are nothing new over USB Type-C cables, as the DP Alt Mode is already taking advantage of this. This is possible because USB4 Version 2.0 will move to PAM3 (Pulse-Amplitude Modulation) data encoding from today's 64/66- or 128/132-bit encoding. The next generation of Thunderbolt is also expected to use PAM3 encoding to reach the rumoured 80 Gbps speeds that were posted somewhat by mistake by an Intel executive last year.

ASRock Shares Some More Details About its X670E Taichi Motherboard

It would appear that we're slowly getting closer to the launch of AMD's AM5 platform, as ASRock just put up its first X670E motherboard on its website. The page still has very limited information and there's only a single picture of the motherboard, which is the same one that the company shared at Computex. However, we now get a few more details with regards to what to expect in terms of additional features. For starters, ASRock has gone for a 26-phase SPS Dr.MOS power design, which should be plenty even for the most avid overclocker. The board has a pair of PCIe 5.0 x16 slots that operate in dual x8 mode when both slots are used. In addition to this there are four M.2 slots, where ASRock has decided to call the CPU connected slot for Blazing, as it's PCIe 5.0, whereas the three PCIe 4.0 slots are using the Hyper name the company has used so far.

The board also has eight SATA ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, which apparently are USB4 certified as well and a header for a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) case mounted port. Furthermore the board has five rear USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) USB-A ports around the back, plus three USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) ports and a further four via headers, as well as a single HDMI port of unknown version. ASRock has gone for an Intel Killer E3100G 2.5 Gbps Ethernet controller and an Intel Killer AX1675X WiFi 6E and Bluetooth card, with the combo having Killer DoubleShot Pro support. Finally audio is via a Realtek ALC4082 USB connected audio codec and an ESS Sabre 9218 DAC. Overall this looks like a pretty kitted out board without too much excessive bling and will hopefully be priced accordingly.

Intel Announces 12th Gen Core Processors with vPro

Intel today launched its 12th Gen Core Processors with vPro. Released across the company's mobile and desktop product lines, these processors are targeted at pre-built commercial desktops and commercial notebooks that companies typically issue their employees, which come with a host of security and remote-management features suitable to a large corporate environment. With this generation, Intel is bringing vPro to even more market segments, including ultraportables designed under the Intel Evo banner; a new breed of enterprise-grade Chromebooks for businesses built entirely on the Chrome OS platform and cloud-based apps; and for the first time, an SMB version of vPro called vPro Essentials, which will make it to entry-level Core i5 processors with vPro.

Security, Productivity, and Future-readiness form the three areas in which Intel innovated for 12th Gen Core processors with vPro. The company added new capabilities for Threat Detection Technology, which can detect ransomware and supply-chain attacks, and can work with various endpoint security software. Intel Hardware Shield technology prevents attacks from "below" the software (below ring-0, or at the firmware, microcode, or hardware levels). This is achieved through hardware-accelerated virtualization and encryption of the entire software environment. Hardware-based protections extend to vPro Enterprise for Chrome.

Intel's Upcoming NUC 12 Extreme Specs Leak

The NUC Extreme might not share much in terms of design with either the original NUC or its earlier Extreme siblings these days, as it's grown into a rather hefty SFF system. Now the 12th gen NUC Extreme has leaked and it comes with a few unexpected surprises, in both a good and a bad sense. Initially it looks like there will be two main barebones SKU's, the NUC12EDBi9 and the NUC12EDBi7, with a 65 W Core i9-12900 and a Core i7-12700 CPU respectively. In other words, it appears we're not looking at any dedicated CPU SKU's this time around.

The first thing that sticks out in the spec is the fact that Intel has gone for a pair of DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, rather than DDR5. In all fairness, this could be due to a lack of DDR5 SO-DIMMs in the market, but feels odd in a product with Extreme in the product name. Memory speeds of up to 3200 MHz are supported and up to 64 GB can be fitted. On the storage side, there's support for no less than three PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe drives using the 2280 form factor. Two of the slots can also accept 2242 drives and SATA drives. A full PCIe 5.0 x16 slot is also present for an optional graphics card, but more on that a little bit later.

Sonnet Announces Avid-Qualified Thunderbolt AVB Adapter for Apple Mac Computers

Sonnet Technologies today announced the Sonnet Thunderbolt AVB Adapter for Mac computers, a compact, bus-powered Gigabit Ethernet adapter with AVB (Audio Video Bridging, aka IEEE 802.1) networking support for Apple Mac computers with Thunderbolt ports. The Avid Qualified Sonnet adapter was designed for use with the Avid Pro Tools | Carbon professional audio interface for music production, enabling MacBook Air and MacBook Pro computers — both lacking onboard Gigabit Ethernet ports — to connect directly to the Avid interface via a Cat 6 cable.

AVB was developed to overcome issues related to attempts at connecting various analog and digital audio video equipment to each other and provide a networking standard on which devices could utilize a common connection (Gigabit Ethernet) and communicate and operate in precise synchronization with each other. Featuring a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt interface, the Sonnet Thunderbolt AVB Adapter supports the proprietary version of AVB employed by the Avid Pro Tools | Carbon interface to stream audio at 32-bit float precision. When used outside the Pro Tools realm, the Sonnet adapter also supports the low-latency, fully synchronized streaming of audio and video over Ethernet required for standard AVB workflows. Using the Sonnet adapter enables users to add their Mac computer as an endpoint in an AVB network and connect to other AVB-enabled devices such as audio interfaces, mixers, plug-in processors, personal monitor stations, stage boxes, speakers, and speaker processors, either directly or through an AVB-compliant switch.

Thunderbolt 5 Could Reach 80 Gbps According to Leaked Photo

Intel Client Computing Group Executive Vice President & GM Gregory Bryant has recently published and deleted an image that appears to show the specifications of a next-generation Thunderbolt technology. The photo was taken at an Intel R&D facility in Israel and shows a poster highlighting "80G PHY Technology" which signifies that Intel is working on an 80 Gbps physical layer. This speed represents a doubling of the existing Thunderbolt 3/4 which runs at 40 Gbps while still working over a USB-C connection. These speeds can be achieved with novel PAM-3 Pulse Amplitude Modulation technology which allows for 50% more bits to be sent per cycle compared to the NRZ technology currently used while limiting the increased complexity that would be introduced with PAM-4. Intel appears to have a working test chip manufactured on the N6 node at TSMC which is showing promising results however we don't expect this technology to reach consumer devices for some time.

USB Power Delivery Controller Shortage Could Impact Intel Tiger Lake Laptop Availability

When Intel launched its Tiger Lake processors for laptops, the company has foreseen a smooth integration by OEMs and plenty of design wins. While that has turned out to be true, there seems to be a big problem lurking in the OEM component supply chain. In the new Tiger Lake systems, the CPU carries support for Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 technologies. However, these protocols can not work on their own, as they require external power delivery controllers (PDC) to function. These PDCs are used to regulate and control all of the power circulating in the USB specification, and they come in a form of a separate chip. This chip is later integrated into PCBs of various systems implementing these technologies.

Today, we have a report coming from Igor's LAB, in which we are told that the availability of these chips could be very bad. Intel's OEMs are using Texas Instruments (TI) 994AD PDC, however, as the supply of these chips becomes scarce, OEMs are turning to TI 993AC/994AC chips. Intel advises OEMs, carrying these chips in their systems, to only communicate benefits of Thunderbolt 4 and exclude USB 4 mentions, or to communicate benefits of Thunderbolt 4 and reference USB 4 "compatibility." This means that every OEM using the alternative chips will get Intel's Thunderbolt 4 certifications, as the company plans to temporarily issue certifications with these chips included, while the supply chain regulates. TI's 993AC/994AC are assumed to not have the power and regulation capability of the USB 4 as the 994AD PDC can.
