Toshiba has decided to name its tablet which has come to be known as "SmartPad" officially as Folio 100. The Folio 100 is Toshiba's tablet device that's based on NVIDIA's Tegra 2 processor, running Android 2.2 operating system. Also revealed are its final hardware specifications, which include 10.1" touchscreen with 1024x600 pixels resolution, 2W internal speakers, 16 GB storage, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, USB 2.0 standard and mini ports (one each), SD/MMC card slot, Opera Mobile web-browser with Adobe Flash 10.1 support, 1.3 MP webcam, and 7 hours battery life on a full-charge. ASUS showed off a new compact external DVD-Writer drive, a yet to be named model that the company refers to as the "Extreme Slim External DVD-RW Drive." The drive is roughly the size of two CD cases, at 14 mm thickness. It is essentially a notebook/slim optical drive inside a sleek, gray brushed-metal enclosure that takes both power and connectivity from its USB 2.0 cable. The unit weighs 320 g. The drive writes DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW at 8x, DVD-RW, double-layer DVD-R/+R at 6x, and DVD-RAM at 5x. CD-R is written at 24x, CD-RW at 16x. ASUS did not give out pricing details, yet.

Corsair, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced the addition of a 16GB model to its Flash Padlock 2 line of secure USB flash drives. With 16GB of flash memory, the newest Padlock doubles the amount of secure storage from the previous version.

The Flash Padlock 2 employs two security technologies for robust data protection. The first of these is a user-defined PIN, or personal identification number. This PIN is entered directly on the Padlock using an integrated keypad, and can range from four to ten digits in length. The second security technology used is 256-bit AES encryption of the contents of the drive.

Active Media Products (AMP), manufacturer of SSDs and innovative USB drives, today began shipping a new key-shaped USB 2.0 drive in 4GB and 8GB capacities that measures a mere 3mm thick.

Samsung hit a new "low" in terms of monitor power consumption, and developed an 18.5" display that draws all its power from USB ports. The new yet to be named display was shown off at the SID 2010 event. The 18.5" display uses a TN-film panel with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, 250 cd/m² maximum brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and LED backlit illumination. The panel needs just 6.3W of power, which it draws from two USB 2.0 ports. It also draws display connection from one of the two USB ports. Samsung's USB-only LED-lit LCD displays will debut in 2011.

A design house has redefined the meaning of "rock-solid" when it comes to durable flash drives. A creation by designer Shu-Chun Hsiao, a set of new flash drives are quite literally rock-solid. The flash-drive module is embedded into a cuboidal block of cement on which its capacity is engraved. It comes in capacities of 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, and weighs in grams approximately the number of Gigabytes of data it holds (for example, the 64 GB model weighs around 64 g, and so on). Despite its capacity, size, shape and texture, it uses a USB 2.0 interface. But given that the design house emphasizes on form over function, we have no complaints. For now these cement drives are a design concept.
