ASUS Motherboard Manual Shows 3D V-Cache Coming to Threadripper

Just last week, AMD announced the arrival of its upcoming Ryzen 9000 series of CPUs with 3D V-Cache for November 7. However, we might be in for a treat, as AMD could be preparing Threadripper 9000WX/X series of CPUs with 3D V-Cache. According to VideoCardz, the ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE board appears to include an intriguing feature in its settings—there's a configuration option related to 3D V-Cache control, though this setting currently doesn't have any practical application with the available Threadripper 7000WX and 7000X processors. The presence of this setting hasn't been officially documented by ASUS, showing that this feature could indeed end up in future iterations of Threadripper processors, namely the 9000WX/X series.

AMD currently offers 3D V-Cache treatment in its high-end Genoa-X CPUs, with up to 96 cores and 192 threads, and 1,152 MB of L3 cache. These CPUs were praised for their capabilities in the high-performance computing sector, performing calculations at unprecedented rates thanks to the massive cache size and bandwidth. If AMD decides to opt-in for the HEDT market with 3D V-Cache, we might see an appearance with the upcoming Threadripper generation. However, right now, it is only speculation based on undocumented features in ASUS's high-end board. Even if these CPUs are planned, we are not near their launch as the priority is launching and shipping the consumer-oriented Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU on November 7.

Dell Announces Newest Workstation Based on AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX 64-core Processor Surfaces on PugetBench Database

AMD's upcoming Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX "Storm Peak" workstation processor surfaced on Puget Systems PugetBench online database. The 7985WX is a 64-core/128-thread processor based on the "Zen 4" microarchitecture, that's configured with an 8-channel DDR5 memory interface (16 sub-channels), and a 128-lane PCI-Express Gen 5 root-complex. The processor was spotted running on an AMD internal development board codenamed "Boulder Gulch" (AMD uses weird internal codenames to back-trace leaks). The machine had a cool 256 GB of 8-channel DDR5-5600 memory, and an NVIDIA RTX A5000 GPU. AMD is planning to release the Ryzen 7000WX workstation processor series some time in October 2023.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 Series Processors Available to the DIY Market

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series processors have been available since March in Lenovo systems. In the meantime, system integrators and OEMs got their hands on these processors and started selling systems based around them. However, today the DIY channel is equipped with these monstrous CPUs. With up to 64 cores and 128 threads of Zen3 IP, these processors can boost up to 4.5 GHz and have 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and an eight-channel DDR4 integrated memory controller with 280 Watt TDP across all models. AMD has noted that the non-Pro Threadripper 5000 series is ceasing production in favor of these Pro models and justifying the increased price point by adding more L3 cache and more cores.

The 24C/48T Threadripper Pro 5965WX comes with a 3.8 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost frequency with 128 MB of L3 cache, and it is priced at 2399 USD. The bigger Threadripper Pro 5975WX is equipped with 32C/64T configuration, has a 3.6 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost speed, and carries 128 MB of L3 cache while priced at 3299 USD. The top-end Threadripper Pro 5995WX is a monstrous 64C/128T design with a base frequency of 2.7 GHz and a boost of 4.5 GHz. It has 256 MB of L3 cache and costs a staggering 6499 USD. Additionally, all of the new Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 series CPUs require a WRX80-based motherboard chipset, which is an additional expense of its own.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX-Series Spec Leak

AMD's Threadripper Pro WX or workstation processors are set to finally join the 5000-series of AMD CPU's if the latest leaks are to be believed. It would seem that AMD is planning no less than five new SKUs, or one more than the current 3000-series of workstation chips. The new entry is a 24 core, 48 thread chip, which was lacking from the current range. As such, the entire series will consist of 12, 16, 24, 32 and 64 core options, all with twice as many threads. All chips have a common 4.5 GHz peak turbo clock, but the base clocks vary by quite a bit, depending on the core count.

The 12 core 5945WX has a base clock of 4.1 GHz, with the 16 core 5955WX coming in at 4 GHz, the 24 core 5965WX then drops to 3.8 GHz, followed by the 32 core 5975WX at 3.6 GHz. Finally the 64 core 5995WX is said to only muster a base clock of 2.7 GHz. All five CPUs have a TDP rating of 280 Watts. The new Threadripper chips are expected to work in current boards that sport a WRX80 socket. As such, PCIe lanes and memory support is expected to remain the same as for the 3000-series.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Released to the DIY Segment, Available from March

AMD today announced that the Ryzen Threadripper PRO workstation processors will be directly available for purchase from March 2021. Until now, the processors were exclusively available as options for the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 workstation. The processors are being released alongside a small selection of compatible motherboards by ASUS and GIGABYTE. The Threadripper PRO processors are built in the sWRX8 package, and compatible with the AMD WRX80 chipset. From what we can tell, these processors are not compatible with sTRX4 motherboards.

What sets the Ryzen Threadripper PRO apart from the regular Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series is that it's a fully unlocked "Rome" multi-chip module re-configured for the workstation, with up to 64 CPU cores, 8-channel DDR4 memory, and 128 PCI-Express Gen 4 lanes. In comparison, the Ryzen Threadripper 3000 chips only feature 4-channel memory, and fewer 72 PCIe Gen 4 lanes from the SoC. The PIB (processor in box) retail package of the Ryzen Threadripper PRO looks rather plain compared to the PC enthusiast-focused Threadripper 3000, with a simple paperboard box that packs the processor, an Asetek AIO CLC adapter, and a spring-loaded screwdriver that's tuned for the sWRX80 socket.

Security Researchers Turn Radeon GPU into a Radio Transmitter with 50ft Range to Steal Data

Thursday we brought you a story of an improbable but ingenious cybersecurity attack vector called Air-ViBER, which uses fan vibrations to transmit data to a nearby listening device in an air-gapped environment. Another team of researchers, led by Mikhail Davidov and Baron Oldenburg, developed an equally ingenious but more insidious attack vector - rapid manipulation of clock speeds of an AMD Radeon Pro WX3100 GPU to turn it into a tunable radio transmitter; and ferrying data off as inaudible and invisible RF transmissions. The graphics card itself works as a radio transmitter, the computer needn't have a WLAN device.

What's worse, the signal has an impressive 50-foot (15.2 m) range, can pass through walls, and can have a far higher data-rate than the fan vibration hack. Even worse, the attack doesn't require any special hacks of the GPU driver or physical modification of the graphics card in any way - only a tool that can manipulate its clock speeds (any overclocking software can do that). Luckily, overclocking tools are privileged applications (requiring ring-0 access), and in most machines it springs up a UAC gate unless the overclocking software installs a driver and service that runs in the background (this installation requires a UAC authorization in the first place). If someone managed to install privileged software on your computer, you have bigger problems than a graphics card that likes to sing. AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X a 24-core Chip the Range Starts With

With its 3rd generation Ryzen Threadripper "Castle Peak" HEDT processor family, AMD isn't bothering with 16-core models as the company's mainstream desktop socket AM4 platform already offers those many cores with the upcoming Ryzen 9 3950X. The lineup will begin with the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X, which is the 24-core/48-thread part. The model number "3950X" is already taken up by the 16-core socket AM4 chip. Confirmation of this came from an "Ashes of the Singularity" screenshot that references an "AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 24-core Processor."

AMD's decision to start the lineup at 24 cores is interesting, as it looks to keep up its competitiveness against Intel, which recently launched its 10th generation "Cascade Lake-X" Core i9 HEDT processor series, with all parts priced under $1000, including the range-topping 18-core/36-thread one. It remains to be seen if the Threadripper 3960X can beat it while holding onto a sub-$1,000 price. The previous-generation 24-core 2970WX beat the i9-9980XE in some rendering and simulation tests that scaled with cores and which weren't too heavy on memory bandwidth. With its 3rd generation Threadripper series, AMD is eliminating a key memory bottleneck, giving each core on the chip an equal access to the processor's monolithic quad-channel memory interface.

Thermaltake Rolls Out Floe Riing RGB 360 TR4 Edition CPU Cooler

Thermaltake today rolled out the Floe Riing RGB 360 TR4 Edition, a variant of this closed-loop liquid CPU cooler for AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors. Although its pump-block has the same dimensions as the original Floe Riing series, the TR4 Edition features an enlarged, rectangular copper base for more coverage of the Ryzen Threadripper integrated heatspreader (IHS).

The cooler features a 360 mm x 120 mm radiator with three included Riing Plus RGB TT Premium Edition fans, which each spin between 1,000 to 2,000 RPM, pushing 26.35 to 54.42 CFM of air-flow, with a noise output ranging between 21.8 to 33 dBA. The three fans and the pump-block feature 16.7 million-color addressable RGB embellishments, which are controlled by the included addressable RGB LED controller. The cooler can handle high enough thermal loads to support 250W TDP Threadripper WX processors with high core-counts. TR4 is also the only socket type supported by this cooler. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Thermaltake Intros Pacific W6 CPU Block for Ryzen Threadripper

Thermaltake introduced the Pacific W6, a CPU water block for AMD socket TR4, suitable for Ryzen Threadripper processors, including the WX-series. The block offers full coverage of the socket TR4 processor integrated heatspreader, and the micro-fin lattice that dissipates heat to the coolant covers all four corners of the base where you'd expect the four dies of the MCM to be.

The primary material is nickel-plated copper with a mirror finish at the base, while the top is acrylic with a silicone periphery that diffuses RGB LEDs. Measuring 85 mm x 117 mm x 26.2 mm (WxDxH, without fittings), the Pacific W6 weighs about 400 g. It's capable of handling thermal loads of up to 250W, and supports standard G 1/4 fittings. The company didn't reveal pricing.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 399.24 Game Ready Drivers with Fix for Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX

NVIDIA today released GeForce 399.24 WHQL "Game Ready" drivers. These drivers come with optimization for the month's biggest AAA game launch: "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," in addition to "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4" - open beta, and "Assetto Corsa Competizione" - early access. There aren't too many issues fixed with this release. Apparently it addresses a performance drop when using NVIDIA cards on a 32-core/64-thread processor, like the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX. It also addresses drivers not correctly installing on machines with ye olde Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.

AMD today announced the availability of world's most powerful desktop processor, the 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor with 32 cores and 64 threads. AMD Announces 2nd Generation Ryzen Threadripper 2000, up to 32 Cores/64 Threads!

AMD announced its second-generation Ryzen Threadripper high-end desktop (HEDT) processor series, succeeding its lean and successful first-generation that disrupted much of Intel's Core X HEDT series, forcing Intel to open up new high-core-count (HCC) market segments beyond its traditional $1000 price-point. AMD's 16-core $999 1950X proved competitive with even Intel's 12-core and 14-core SKUs priced well above the $1200-mark; and now AMD looks to beat Intel at its game, with the introduction of new 24-core and 32-core SKUs at prices that are sure to spell trouble for Intel's Core X HCC lineup. The lineup is partially open to pre-orders, with two SKUs launching within August (including the 32-core one), and two others in October.

At the heart of AMD's second-generation Ryzen Threadripper is the new 12 nm "Pinnacle Ridge" die, which made its debut with the 2nd Generation Ryzen AM4 family. This die proved to introduce 3-5 percent IPC improvements in single-threaded tasks, and multi-threaded improvements with an improved Precision Boost II algorithm, which boosted frequencies of each of 8 cores on-die. The Threadripper is still a multi-chip module, with 2 to 4 of these dies, depending on the SKU. There are four of these - the 12-core/24-thread Threadripper 2920X, the 16-core/32-thread Threadripper 2950X; the 24-core/48-thread Threadripper 2970WX, and the flagship 32-core/64-thread Threadripper 2990WX.

AMD Readies Radeon Pro WX 9100: Vega for Professionals

After releasing the Vega Frontier Edition, AMD's take on a "prosumer" GPU which straddles the line between a professional and gaming graphics card, with somewhat mixed results, AMD is apparently now working on the fully professional version of the Vega silicon. Identified as the Radeon Pro WX 9100 (which is in line with AMD's current professional nomenclature), this professional graphics card will look to fully accelerate professional workloads, with a driver specifically crafted for such.

Recently rearing its head on CompuBench, the GPU features a low 1200 MHz clock speed, which is around 402 MHz lower than the Frontier Edition, and supposedly lower still than the Gaming RX Vega variant of the GPU. The Vega-based WX 9100 joins the Polaris-based WX 7100, WX 5100 and WX 4100 professional graphics cards, thus apparently topping out AMD's professional line-up for the year.

AMD Announces Radeon Pro WX 2100, WX 3100 for Workstations

AMD has recently added two new offerings to their WX series of professional, workstation-oriented graphics cards. The WX 2100 and WX 3100 are entry-level offerings for the professional market, with 512 stream processors running at 1,219 MHz on a 14 nm graphics processor based on the Polaris architecture. The RX 2100 features 2GB of GDDR5 memory on a 64-bit interface; the RX 3100 doubles those figures to 4GB of memory on a 128-bit interface.

On performance, AMD said that the soon to be released WX 2100 and WX 3100 deliver up to 2x the performance of previous entry-level professional AMD graphics, and up to 28% faster performance than competing NVIDIA offerings. The WX 2100 is expected to cost $149, while the WX 3100 is expected to go for $199. AMD said the Radeon Pro WX 2100 and WX 3100 are both expected to launch in June; an exact date wasn't provided. The company also said both cards are covered by 24/7 customer support and a three-year limited warranty that can be extended up to seven years.

AMD Reveals Three Entries on the WX Series Lineup: WX4100, WX5100 and WX7100

At its WX call, AMD focused on shifts in creativity from traditional design flows such as Solidworks, Adobe and Autodesk towards game engines as solutions for design visualization (Unreal Engine, Unity, CryEngine, or Autodesk's own Stingray platform), which signal changes in the creator ecosystem. Thanks to globalization, the Internet, and the available wealth of knowledge one can access through it, the line between amateurs and professionals is becoming more and more blurred. Now, those who would once be called amateurs are also using professional tools, and AMD plans to be at the forefront of technologies empowering creators to deliver their vision.
