Microsoft is testing a user-interface refresh with an upcoming update to Windows 10. Released for testing with Insider Preview Build 21343, the refresh includes new system icons that are of a significantly different design scheme from the ones you have now. System folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, etc.,) now come with color-coded icons resembling something from a Windows-knockoff Linux desktop environment. The graphics of the icons appear simpler, and this simplicity probably has something to do with the emergence of remote-desktop/virtual-desktop, where simpler graphics are easier on the network bandwidth, particularly on the side of the VDI server. The current system icons of Windows 10 are evolved from those of previous Windows versions.

In 2019, AMD and Samsung have announced that they will be joining forces to develop a new class of mobile SoCs, carrying the Exynos name and having a Radeon GPU inside. These Exynos SoCs could be used for almost everything that needs a low-power processor. While the original plan was to have these processors run inside Samsung's mobile phone offerings, it seems like there is another application for them. If the rumors coming from ZDNet Korea are correct, we are in for a surprise. According to the source, Samsung is preparing to use the Exynos SoC with Radeon graphics in the company's next-generation laptops lineup.

While there is little to no information regarding the specifications of the said system, we can expect it to be a fully Samsung-made laptop. That means that Samsung will provide display, RAM, storage, battery, and other components manufactured by the company or its divisions. This laptop is expected to replace Samsung's Galaxy Book S, which currently uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx SoC. The new PC is going to be Windows 10 based system. NVIDIA has stopped recommending "V-Sync OFF" as a global setting, starting with its GeForce 461.09 WHQL drivers. The NVIDIA Control Panel utility, which lets users configure global- and application-specific 3D settings, uses a tiny NVIDIA logo to denote recommended settings. Its V-Sync settings let you select between "Use 3D Application Settings," global Off, global On, and "Adaptive V-Sync."

NVIDIA explains that it changed this recommendation as the GeForce drivers since 461.09 support MPO (multiple plane overlay). Prior to 461.09, the Windows 10 DWM (desktop windows manager) would composit the contents of all windows into a single plane and presented at display refresh-rate cadence, so tearing was avoided even with V-Sync globally off. With MPO, applications are allowed to present their contents independently, each with their own V-Sync setting. The OS, outside of driver control, decides which apps get promoted to their own MPO plane. This would lead to screen-tearing if V-Sync is globally off, even in Windowed or Windowed-Maximized (pseudo-fullscreen) modes.

Windows OS security is taken seriously, as the OS is wide-spread across millions of PCs around the world, however, there may be issues where OS has some security flaw that is found by external researchers. Due to the sheer code base of the new OS like Windows 10, there are a plethora of bugs and security flaws waiting to get discovered by someone. And today, thanks to the team of cybersecurity researchers, we have found out that in Windows 10 file-system called NTFS, there is a bug that corrupts your hard drive by simply triggering a specific variable name in a file.

If the end-user inside Windows 10 tries to access the NTFS attribute called "$i30" in a specific way, the flaw is exploited. The NTFS search index attribute, specifically the string "$i30", is containing a list of files and subfolders in a directory, and there is even a log of deleted files and folders. After running a specific command inside the command line (CMD) or inside the browser, Windows will start to display warnings of "File or directory is corrupted and cannot be read". After that, the OS will prompt a user to restart the machine and repair the damaged drive, so the Windows disk check utility will start. Once corrupted, Windows 10 will start displaying a notification indicating that the main file table (MFT) on the particular disk is corrupted and thus can not operate. Starting from the build Windows 10 Build 1803 the OS is vulnerable until the current version and a possible fix is expected to be released soon.

AMD late Monday released the latest version of Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition. Version 20.11.3 beta adds support for Vulkan Ray Tracing Extensions. Khronos had recently finalized the Vulkan RT specification. Additionally, the drivers add optimization for Immortals: Fenyx Rising. The drivers also address a fairly long list of issues. For starters, it addresses lower performance observed for the RX 6800 series GPUs on Watch Dogs Legion and DiRT 5; and low performance noticed for the RX 5000 and older GPUs on Godfall. Some character models facing display corruption in Crysis Remastered on RX 6800 series has been fixed. Intermittent game crashes with Troy: A Total War Saga, and WoW Shadowlands have been fixed.

A bug that caused WoW Shadowlands to fail to launch on Windows 7 machines with DirectX 12 renderer selected, has been fixed. Some intermittent game crashes seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with DXR enabled on RX 6800 series, have been fixed. Doom Eternal with HDR enabled disabling HDR on Windows 10, has been fixed. TechPowerUp today released the latest version of TechPowerUp GPU-Z, the popular graphics sub-system information and diagnostic utility. Version 2.35.0 adds support for new GPUs, and fixes a number of bugs. To begin with, GPU-Z adds support for AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs based on the "Navi 21" silicon. Support is also added for Intel DG1 GPU. BIOS extraction and upload for NVIDIA's RTX 30-series "Ampere" GPUs has finally been introduced. Memory size reporting on the RTX 3090 has been fixed. The latest Windows 10 Insider Build (20231.1000) made some changes to DirectML, which caused GPU-Z to report it as unavailable, this has been fixed.

TechPowerUp GPU-Z 2.35.0 also makes various improvements to fake GPU detection for cards based on NVIDIA GT216 and GT218 ASICs. Hardware detection for AMD Radeon Pro 5600M based on "Navi 12" has been fixed. AMD's RDNA2 graphics architecture features hardware-accelerated decoding of the AV1 video format, according to a Microsoft blog announcing the format's integration with Windows 10. The blog mentions the three latest graphics architectures among those that support accelerated decoding of the format—Intel Gen12 Iris Xe, NVIDIA RTX 30-series "Ampere," and AMD RX 6000-series "RDNA2." The AV1 format is being actively promoted by major hardware vendors to online streaming content providers, as it offers 50% better compression than the prevalent H.264 (translating into that much bandwidth savings), and 20% better compression than VP9. You don't need these GPUs to use AV1, anyone can use it with Windows 10 (version 1909 or later), by installing the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. The codec will use software (CPU) decode in the absence of hardware acceleration.

Microsoft has announced that they will be pushing x64 app support on their Windows 10 on Arm operating system. This is part of a move by Microsoft to mainstream adoption of their OS (and related services) on Arm-based platforms, ensuring that the company has a foothold in that market - especially as competition between Arm and x86-x64 architectures increases further and reaches more and more areas. Whereas before, Arm was relegated to low-power, relatively low performance designs, recent years have seen Arm's design performance (and philosophy) looking for higher performance use-cases both in the consumer and server/supercomputing spaces. One needs not look further than NVIDIA's plans to acquire Arm to see how much stock is being placed in Arm's future,

The x64 application support for Windows 10 on Arm will first be enabled for Windows Insiders come November, and will support all Windows 10 on Arm system released in the last couple of years, no matter the processor. This support works through emulation, though, so it remains to be seen exactly how well - and at what performance - these applications run. Microsoft has already improved tools and SDKs for application porting efforts to its Windows 10 on Arm ecosystem, and the company will be releasing custom-tailored versions of the Edge Browser, Microsoft Teams, and Visual Studio that play on the platform's strengths. Interesting times lie ahead of us - and if NVIDIA is able to go through with its Arm acquisition (which is a long way from being a guarantee), we might be looking at NVIDIA-branded laptops that run Windows 10 on Arm alongside branded Arm CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs.

Ubisoft released the PC system requirements lists of its upcoming open-world cyberpunk game, Watch Dogs: Legion. When it releases on October 29, 2020, "Legion" will be among the first to feature new NVIDIA technologies such as DLSS 8K, letting you take advantage of GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs to play the game at 8K. It also features support for NVIDIA RTX real-time raytracing, and DLSS 2.0 performance-enhancing image quality features. Other PC-specific technical features include an uncapped frame-rate, support for various ultra-widescreen display aspect-ratios, a selection of in-game graphics settings, and an internal benchmark that also tests NVIDIA RTX performance.

With raytracing off, Watch Dogs: Legion doesn't call for particularly exotic hardware.
