Intel Core Ultra 9 285K Tops PassMark Single-Thread Benchmark

According to the latest PassMark benchmarks, the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K is the highest-performing single-thread CPU. The benchmark king title comes as PassMark's official account on X shared single-threaded performance number, with the upcoming Arrow Lake-S flagship SKU, Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, scoring 5,268 points in single-core results. This is fantastic news for gamers, as games mostly care about single-core performance. This CPU, having 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores, boasts 5.7 GHz P-core boost and 4.6 GHz E-core boost frequencies. The single-core tests put the new SKU at 11% lead compared to the previous-generation Intel Core i9-14900K processor.

However, the multithreaded cases are running more slowly. The PassMark multithreaded results put Intel Core Ultra 9 285K at 46,872 points, which is about 22% slower than the last-generation top SKU. While this may be a disappointment for some, it is partially expected, given that Arrow Lake stops the multithreaded designs in Intel CPU families. From now on, every CPU will be a combination of P and E-Cores, tuned for efficiency or performance depending on the use case. It is also possible that the CPU used inn PassMark's testing was an engineering sample, so until official launch, we have no concrete information about its definitive performance comparison.

Intel Ships 0x129 Microcode Update for 13th and 14th Generation Processors with Stability Issues

Intel has officially started shipping the "0x129" microcode update for its 13th and 14th generation "Raptor Lake" and "Raptor Lake Refresh" processors. This critical update is currently being pushed to all OEM/ODM partners to address the stability issues that Intel's processors have been facing. According to Intel, this microcode update fixes "incorrect voltage requests to the processor that are causing elevated operating voltage." Intel's analysis shows that the root cause of stability problems is caused by too high voltage during operation of the processor. These increases to voltage cause degradation that increases the minimum voltage required for stable operation. Intel calls this "Vmin"—it's a theoretical construct, not an actual voltage, think "speed for an airplane required to fly". The latest 0x129 microcode patch will limit the processor's voltage to no higher than 1.55 V, which should avoid further degradation. Overclocking is still supported, enthusiasts will have to disable the eTVB setting in their BIOS to push the processor beyond the 1.55 V threshold. The company's internal testing shows that the new default settings with limited voltages with standard run-to-run variations show minimal performance impact, with only a single game (Hitman 3: Dartmoor) showing degradation. For a full statement from Intel, see the quote below.

Intel Discontinues 13th Generation "Raptor Lake" K-Series Overclockable CPU SKUs

Intel has decided to discontinue its entire 13th Gen Raptor Lake lineup of overclockable "K-series" CPU SKUs. According to an official product change notice, the company will stop accepting orders for chips like the Core i9-13900KS, Core i9-13900K, Core i9-13900KF, Core i7-13700K, Core i7-13700KF, Core i5-13600K, and Core i5-13600KF after May 24th, 2024. Final shipments to vendors are targeted for June 28th. After those dates, availability of the unlocked Raptor Lake processors will rapidly diminish as the remaining inventory gets sold off, possibly at inflated prices due to shortages. This discontinuation comes just over a year after Raptor Lake's launch in late 2022, which delivered additional performance improvements over the previous Alder Lake generation.

Raptor Lake brought higher clocks, more cache, additional efficiency cores, and enough muscle to compete with AMD's Ryzen 7000 CPUs in many workloads. Interestingly, Intel has not yet discontinued Alder Lake, suggesting those 12th-generation chips may still be available for some time. While the death of the overclockable Raptor Lake K-series CPUs is unfortunate for enthusiasts, there is an upside—it paves the way for Intel's current generation Raptor Lake refresh, 14th generation Core processors, to clear inventory before the next-generation processors arrive. The 15th generation "Arrow Lake" Core Ultra 2 series of processors could be teased at the upcoming Computex event in June.

Intel Core i9-14900T Geekbenched - Comparable to AMD Ryzen 9 7900

Intel's Core i9-14900T processor was "officially" released last month alongside an expanded population of "Raptor Lake Refresh" products—the T-class alternative to Team Blue's flagship desktop Core i9-14900 CPU is a less glamorous prospect, hence almost zero press coverage and tech reviews. Its apparent lack of visibility is not helped by non-existent availability at retail, despite inclusion in Team Blue's second wave of 14th Generation Core processors (Marketing Status = Launched). The Core i9-14900 (non-K) is readily obtainable around the globe, as a lower-power alternative to the ever greedy Core i9-14900K, but their T-class SKU sibling takes frugality to another level. TPU's resident CPU tester, W1zzard, implemented six distinct power limit settings during a i9-14900K supplemental experiment, with the lowest being 35 W—coincidentally, matching the i9-14900T's default base power.

His simulated findings were not encouraging, to say the least, but late last week BenchLeaks noticed that a lone test system had gauged the T-class part's efficiency-oriented processing prowess. Geekbench 6.2.2 results were generated by an ASRock Z790 PG-ITX/TB4 build (with 64 GB of 5586 MT/s DDR5 SDRAM)—scoring 3019 in the overall single-core category, and 16385 in multi-core stakes. The latter score indicates a 22% performance penalty when referenced against Tom Hardware's Geekbenched i9-14900K sample. The publication reckons that these figures place Intel's Core i9-14900T CPU in good company—notably AMD's Ryzen 9 7900 processor, one of the company's trio of 65 W "non-X" SKUs. Last March, W1zzard was suitably impressed by his review sample's "fantastic energy efficiency"—the Geekbench 6 official scoreboard awards it 2823 (single-core) and 16750 (multi-core) based on aggregated data from multiple submissions.

MSI Readies BIOS Update for 14th Generation Intel Core Processors to Enable APO

According to the discovery made by @ghost_motley on X/Twitter, we have information that MSI is starting to roll out BIOS updates to accommodate Intel's Application Optimization called APO shortly. This update, however, comes with significant restrictions. Intel APO, designed to enhance performance, is exclusively compatible with 14th Gen Intel CPUs, leaving owners of previous-generation Intel processors, mainly the closely comparable 13th Gen, without this benefit. Intel's APO is an extension of its Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) specifically for gaming. It is available on select 14th Gen Core processors like the i9-14900K/KF, enhancing workload distribution across hardware resources like P-cores and optimizing them for peak frequencies.

As noted, the current rollout of Intel APO support is limited, namely to the Intel Core i7-14700K, i7-14700KF, i9-14900K, and i9-14900KF, excluding the Core i5 series. This omission is significant given APO's focus on boosting gaming performance, a feature that would be highly beneficial to Core i5 users. However, the feature is currently supported by only two games: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and Metro Exodus. The frame rate improvements in Rainbow can be as high as 13% while also boosting Metro Exodus FPS by 16%. Whether we will see more APO-optimized games or not, owners of MSI motherboards have received their updates and are ready to enjoy the FPS increase.

Intel Core Ultra 9 185H Appears with 16C/22T Configuration at 5.1 GHz

Intel's upcoming Meteor Lake processor family will see the light of the day in mobile version only, with a big re-brand of the Intel Core i naming structure. Slated for a December 14th launch, we are eager to see the official performance figures. However, we are in for a treat today as we have some early performance figures thanks to Geekbench. According to the GB5 run found by BenchLeaks, Intel's Core Ultra 9 185H CPU has appeared to show its configuration, early performance, and boost frequency that is reaching beyond the 5.0 GHz mark.

As the GB5 run suggests, Core Ultra 9 185H is a 16-core CPU with 22 threads, running at 2.5 GHz base frequency. There are six P-cores, eight E-cores, and two SoC-cores on the package of this SKU. During boost, the CPU can reach up to 5.1 GHz and was paired with 64 GB of DDR5 memory. Interestingly, the CPU scored 1849 points in single-threaded tests and 9832 points in multi-threaded tests, which currently doesn't beat top-end Intel mobile HX SKU like i9-13980HX. However, we estimate this was an early engineering sample, and the final product will be more performant.

Intel 14th Gen Core i3 CPUs Rumoured to Remain Quad Core Chips

According to a post by Twitter/X leaker @g01d3nm4ng0, it looks like Intel has no intention of giving its 14th gen Core i3 processors more than four cores. We'd take this leak with the usual helping of seasoning, but the leaker does provide details on what is expected to be most of Intel's non-K SKU 14th gen lineup, including clock speeds. If correct, then most of the 14th gen Core processors will see a 200 MHz boost speed clock increase over their 13th gen counterparts, with the exception of the Core i5-14400 which only gets a 100 MHz increase.

The non-K CPUs follow a familiar pattern to previous generation Intel chips, with the Core i9 and Core i7 parts being 200 MHz slower than their K SKU variants, with the Core i5 being 100 MHz slower. The only other noteworthy piece of information in this leak, is that the Core i7-14700 gets the same extra four E-Cores, just as its K SKU variant, or four more E-Cores than the Core i7-13700. At this point in time it's just plain weird that Intel hasn't added E-Cores to its Core i3 range of desktop chips, as even the lowest-end Core i5 SKU sports six P-Cores and four E-Cores since the 13th gen, so the Core i3 should be a 4+4 chip by now, but it seems like Intel has other plans for the i3-14100/F.

Intel "Raptor Lake Refresh" 14th Generation Core CPUs now Supported in AIDA64

We have been gathering rumors of next-generation Intel desktop silicon. However, thanks to the latest software version of AIDA64, it can now identify Intel Core i3/i5/i7 and i9 processors from the coming Raptor Lake silicon refresh, also referred to as 14th Gen Core or 14000 series. AIDA64 cannot yet distinguish between specific models, as Intel has not officially disclosed these, nor have any documents been leaked. Nevertheless, the software should now be capable of displaying whether the current 13th Gen chip or the refreshed 14th model is in use.

Speculation indicates that Intel plans to launch its 14th Gen Core desktop CPUs in October, with an announcement scheduled at the Innovation event a month before. There is no concrete information regarding individual SKUs; however, expectations are that the new range will feature more cores for mid-range and entry-level segments, along with a minimum of 200 MHz higher clock speeds for Core i9 models. The AIDA64 software also adds support for some already launched hardware like AMD's Navi 24, which includes Radeon RX 6450M and Radeon RX 6550M. The complete list of changes can be found below.
