1STPLAYER LANG MK8 Keyboard Review

Value and Conclusion

  • The 1stplayer LANG MK8 keyboard is a recent release currently available over some regional distributors. I couldn't find it over bigger players just yet, but the company says they are aiming to make it available on Amazon, under others, for around $50 for customers in the US.
  • Good value for the feature set
  • Five different switch options with pre-applied lube for smooth typing
  • Full programmability via software allows for the use of different OS/typing/language layouts
  • Per-key 16.8 M RGB backlighting with several presets
  • Enhanced portability and ergonomics with the tiny bezels and detachable cable
  • Hot-swappable switches via the CIY socket
  • Type-C connectivity for USB charging and connection
  • Several cost-saving measures taken to hit the price point
  • Retail availability is still a question mark
  • Pad-printed legends are not backlighting compatible and will wear out sooner rather than later
  • The software drivers need to be improved for a better user experience
  • CIY socket only for 13 keys
I was hoping that by the time I finish writing this review, there would be a sale link for me to use. As it turns out, it's been a couple of months since and nothing has changed. I have to go with their target price here, which is in line with their other offerings. For example, the 1stplayer DK 5.0 LITE is a TKL keyboard with no hot-swappable switches and retail Outemu switches. While older, it currently sells for $40–$45. The newer LANG MK8 with its subjective improvements throughout coming in at $50 is still very good value thus. Indeed, pricing on regional stores actually converts to slightly under $50, too.

As such, a lot of the issues I had with the keyboard can now be swept under the keyboard. The only real point of contention is the software experience, which can definitely be improved upon. A lot of this is as simple as hiring a QC and English-speaking team to fine-tune the whole thing, but I'd also like to see the company use a unified driver instead of different programs for every single product they have. In some cases, the language barrier is so high it actually is an impediment and requires minor trial and error. However snobby I may be coming off here, rest assured that it is not a deal-breaker. You get what you pay for with most 1stplayer products, and the LANG MK8 is no exception.

The trouble is that most of this paragraph is taken verbatim from my review of a Redragon keyboard. Indeed, there is so much in common here that 1stplayer is having trouble getting me to distinguish it from other contemporaries of the region. What does that say about the average end user then? I urge the company to do more different to get eyes upon the brand and avoid dismissal as another Amazon special, which unfortunately is easier said that done. They aimed to do so here with the balance of features and pre-applied branded lube on Gateron switches, but the lack of much e-tailer interest to date suggests otherwise. If you spot the LANG MK8 somewhere, however, do consider it. It does plenty to justify your hard earned money.
