Value and Conclusion

  • The Alphacool Eisblock XPX Pro Aurora full brass CPU water block costs €129.98 (inc. VAT) from the Alphacool web shop, but customers in the USA would get it from an authorized reseller, including Aquatuning US, where the water block can be had for $136.54 as of the date of this review.
  • Decent price for a full metal top CPU block
  • Extensive CPU socket compatibility
  • Good thermal performance
  • Comes in other top versions at lower prices
  • Acrylic top options support with more RGB lighting if relevant to you
  • Installation can be confusing and finicky
  • Relatively higher coolant flow restriction
  • Costs more than many competitors
  • RGB support on this full brass version is weak
Those who were fretting about CPU blocks becoming increasingly socket-specific and expensive still have options as we have seen recently. Alphacool joins the club with more CPU socket support than any other water block I've tested to date, although how practical some of these are in 2022 is a whole other matter. If anything, I would argue there is too much support, which can end up confusing some users when it comes to installation on their motherboard. Adding to this is the recent update to the LGA 1700 platform and the newer Intel socket backplate that is only reflected in an addendum, not the more detailed user manual. The block also not the easiest thing in the world to install, but you do get the hang of it and I had a much easier time doing so for my second and third mounts as part of the thermal testing.

That's really the main thing to be aware of, with the other negative points not being as relevant. You are getting a high-performance block as a result of one of the largest cold plates on CPU blocks, with an equally large heat transfer area. All those microfins and channels add up to make this a more restrictive CPU block than the others tested in this round, but not enough to make a significant difference as long as you have a decent pump in the loop. The cost comes off quite reasonable in 2022 for a full metal top block that is updated for all the latest platforms and does a good job too. If anything, some of the blocks from direct competitors make this look like an absolute bargain. Also, I wasn't expecting any lighting on this particular block and I also would not get this version for a light show anyway—there's an acrylic top version with more LEDs spread around the frame, that also costs less. This block came about because Alphacool noticed the Eisblock XPX Pro was selling quite well and decided to do a special edition with full brass tops and housings in two different colors and finishes. I will look at the other color/finish with another Eisblock shortly, and I'd say both help fill the needs for those looking for an attractive metal CPU block.
