Value and Conclusion

  • The Amacron Free Earth 88PLUS AX600-88FE retails for $105
  • Fair price-performance ratio
  • Efficient
  • Good performance of +12V in Advanced Transient Tests
  • +12V, 5V and 3.3V inside 3% regulation limit
  • 3.3V rail exceeded limits, in Advanced Transient Test #2
  • +12V and 5V low during Crossload Tests
  • No MOV in the transient filtering stage
  • Plain 2-ball bearing fan instead of FDB, as Amacrox states
Overall we were quite satisfied with the Amacrox AX600-88FE. For its price it has a lot to offer, such as high efficiency which is definitely Silver, voltage regulation inside 3% and good performance of +12V in sudden transient loads. Also, although it's not modular it has all of its cables fully sleeved so with a little effort you will be able to arrange them nicely into your case. In addition cable length is sufficient and it has enough connectors for its wattage.
The most significant drawback we spotted was that in a very likely to happen scenario (Crossload test #2) the voltage drop at +12V was huge (for our standards), however still inside ATX specification limits. We also noticed the lack of an MOV in the transient filtering stage. A Metal Oxide Varistor is used to protect the PSU and the system from voltage spikes coming out of the power grid. Unfortunately this is not the first time we see an FSP PSU that lacks an MOV, actually we have seen many and we still cannot understand why FSP omits such a cheap but crucial component from their designs.
To sum up Amacrox AX600-88FE is a PSU with a fair price that we can recommend for users that have a single VGA system (or two low/middle-end VGAs) and don't mind spending some extra time for cable management, since this is not a modular PSU.
