Trying to write this conclusion, I really spent a lot of time trying to figure out what could be the demerits of the Athlon II X2 240. The only thing I can think of, that is really worth mentioning, is that it is a dual core processor, and you can get one more core for a mere $15 extra with AMD's new Athlon II X3 425 model that was introduced a couple of days ago. More cores means more future proof performance, as more and more applications start to utilize more than two cores. But then again, there are still users that need the cheapest good performing processor with more than on core, and Athlon II X2 240 could very well be the perfect solution for them.
Going back to our review of the Athlon II X4 620 and its bad gaming performance, Athlon II X2 could end up beating the Athlon II X3 or even X4 models in gaming because of the larger L2 cache. That's something we will be checking in the near future, but for now, there doesn't seem to be any major downsides to this CPU. It does what it is supposed to, it does it very well, and it does it for cheap, and efficiently. If you throw in a cheap AMD 785G motherboard with SidePort memory, you get a great little platform for HTPC use, or even a small portable LAN gaming rig. Add to that AM2+ and DDR2 memory compatibility and this little fellow is starting to look like a very, very versatile and flexible CPU. Don't forget its very good overclocking and undervolting potential. With a $60 price tag, it is worth considering for anyone looking for a cheap upgrade, HTPC system, or a small gaming rig.
