Value and Conclusion

  • The Antec HCG-620 retails for $89.99
  • Handles full power flawlessly at over 50 °C ambient
  • +12V performed well in Advanced Transient Tests
  • High efficiency (for an 80Plus Bronze certified PSU)
  • Excellent ripple/noise suppression
  • All capacitors used are Japanese made
  • Good price/performance ratio
  • 3 year warranty
  • 5V and 3.3V failed to keep their voltages within ATX limits in the second part of Advanced Transient Tests
  • Voltage regulation at Crossload tests (this is mostly for the low +12V rail at CL2 test)
  • Loose voltage regulation at 3.3V
I think that the Antec HCG-620 is a fairly good PSU, especially for the money it costs. It proved that can handle full power even under very high ambient temperatures with good efficiency, ultra low ripple and good voltage regulation at +12V. In addition it carries enough connectors for its capacity and cable length is sufficient. One of the few downfalls I spotted is that the minor rails (5V/3.3V) did not register such good voltage regulation as +12V, although in normal tests they always stayed within 5% range (the maximum deviation that the ATX specification allows). However, what troubled me the most was the performance of the afore-mentioned rails in the second part of the advanced transient tests, where output voltages dropped very low. Nevertheless, the most significant rail, +12V, performed really well in the same tests.

Bottom line, If you are on the search for a reliable budget PSU to power your single VGA system and you don't have a problem with non-modular ones, then you should put HCG-620 into serious consideration. It has a good price/performance ratio, is made by one of the best OEMs, Seasonic, and it's accompanied by 3-years of Antec's warranty.
